i recently made a trip to portland, oregon for a wedding. this trip qualified as the annual reunion of a bunch of beer friends from around the country (the europeans, save the ex-pat groom, couldn't make it), so what better way to hang out than to visit a bunch of beer places in one of the best beer cities in the entire country? hopworks urban brewery, known as hopworks or, more simply, hub, stands as a rather unusual brewing entity: the organic brewpub. they embrace the environmental responsibility of so much of portland, from the organic angle to the embracing of bicycles as transportation - those are bicycle racks all the way around the patio. why, we don't mind if we do! while hub handles a full slate of good pub food, we'd already enjoyed the delicious sandwiches at laurelhurst market (post to come, eventually), so we settled in for a few beers in a half-empty space at 2:30 in the afternoon. happy hour didn't start till 3:00, but we figured we'd be there a while. we each ordered p

great atmosphere - boring food. hopworks urban brewery has a lot going for it. the interior is interesting with lots of exposed beams and metal and wood nooks. there is a large parking lot and two floors of tables to accommodate guests. there are two children's areas with lots of toys to entertain the younger set. there are a variety of home brewed beers to choose from including a stout i particularly enjoyed. it is family friendly, but also a good space to hang out with your pals and drink. the food though does not live up to everything else. they have pizzas, sandwiches, and salads. the soft pretzel appetizer was good, though not much to it. the wings are served on fries, but neither stands out as particularly appealing. the pear and blue-cheese salad was tasty. in general there's nothing wrong with any of the entrees or appetizers, they just don't live up to everything else. go to hub for a beer or have a fun time hanging out with friends or family, just don't expect your taste-buds to be delighted.

if you have kids don't worry about the wait because hub is very kid friendly, they even have a play area with chalkboards, trains, toys, etc. very cool.

top notch. we've been going to hopworks since they opened and it just seems to get better and better. last night i ordered the portland bella and it was awesome! sometimes with a portabella burger the mushroom gets lost in a huge bun but the portland bella had two mushrooms! the beer (ipa and abominable) were fantastic.

one of the best breweries and pizza places in portland (only better pizza is apizza scholls). family friendly environment with great beer always on tap. we had the bbq pizza which had the perfect balance of bacon, chicken, and a slightly spicy/tangy bbq s

love it!. great food, great beer. and there is an energy to the place that just warms my soul. it is truely kid friendly, unlike some places higher in the urbanspoon top ten list for this. the staff are nice to kids and helpful and there are play areas with toys that migrate from therfe to tables and back again. school age kids sometimes migrate too and parents are generally relaxed and friendly about this. fun for the whole family.
