what i can say?. that hasn't been said abouthodad'sfor years! the best burger ever. if you are an eater, i recommend the double bacon cheeseburger basket (with onion rings). you may not need to eat for a week.

bring a magazine, you'll wait in line a while.

my favorite "joint" in ob.

i was determined to visithodad'swhile in san diego and am glad my friend and i made the effort. going in, my expectations were sky high. after all, guy fieri had declaredhodad'sthe best burger in america and he has eaten a few good burgers here and there.

i am happy to report that, yes, hodad'sis really that good. we walked up and got the last table without having to wait (it was a tuesday at about 6:30). i loved the funky california vibe within: rock music playing, walls covered in license plates, and the open front windows.

my friend sam and i each ordered the bacon cheeseburger, i with fries and she with onion rings. sam had the mini cheeseburger which he declared the best burger he ever had.

where to begin to describe ahodad'sburger? sonnets could easily be written in honor of it and even the most skilled poet might fall short. it is a culinary delight, an overpowering of succulent enjoyment. everything was perfect and we were left overjoyed with greasy hands and full bellies. it was everything i hoped it would be!

the food was amazing. i had read that the portions were huge, so we got mini cheeseburgers, a half order of frings and chocolate milkshakes - everything was outstanding and the milkshakes were the biggest and best we've ever had. the waiters were fun and happily helped us pack up our leftovers and put our remaining milkshakes in to-go cups.hodad'sis a small, fun place with interesting license plates all over the walls. this was a delightful experience and is highly recommended. we went about 6:00 on a tuesday evening and managed to beat the long lines.

downtown location - meh. we lived in ob for years and ate athodad'sseveral times over the years, the last time being about 8 years ago. we always ordered the bacon cheeseburger and it was always massive. the bacon was thick and squished together and cooked in a sort of patty shape. it was crispy and delicious. i don't remember for sure if we were given a choice or not but the cheese was always cheddar. two days ago we decided to check out the new downtown location. we again ordered the bacon cheeseburger and what a disappointment! the cheese was american and the bacon was two strips of ordinary bacon laid atop the cheese. there was a big glob of mustard and mayo (no ketchup) that made the bottom bun wet and floppy and it was layered with what amounted to a 2 inch stack of pickles when piled up. it also had shredded lettuce that became wilted yuck from the hot burger. in the past it was topped with a big chunk of fresh crispy lettuce. the fries were good but not good enough to make the burger more than average. the $6 value burger (add cheese and bacon) at denny's is just as good if not better. huge disappointment. :(

anti-climax at hodad's!!!!. i visitedhodad'son my quest to find san diego's best burger. i searched online andhodad'swas one of the highest rated, reviews raving about their burgers and onion rings. needless to say i was excited to try it out. i arrived outside the restaurant on a sunny sunday afternoon and was even more excited waiting the 20 minutes or so it took to get seated. i am informed that this is normal at hodad's. i went with my better half and we eventually got seated in a booth. the server was friendly and attentive and brought us water straight away. we read over the menu and decided to order a portion of "frings" (a mixture of onion rings and fries, which are actually wedges) to kick things off. i then decided to opt for the guido burger (burger, pastrami, fried onions, pickles, ketchup and hot mustard all in a bun). my girlfriend ordered the cheese burger (cheese, onion, ketchup and mustard). the "frings" arrived and i was impressed by both the quantity and the flavour on both the onion rings and the wedges, deep fried and crispy, yet spicy and warming..... excellent. although i was still full of excitement awaiting the burger. the burgers arrived and i was immediatly disappointed to see, what i can only describe, as a mcdonalds style patty in my bun. the bun was good and you could have choked a horse with the sheer quantity of pastrami on top of my patty, in fact i had to remove some. the fried onions were good, however, the, allegedly, hot mustard had very little heat or flavour. in saying that the patty was still the most disappointing ingredient within my bun. thin, greyish brown meat which was oozing grease, so much so my bun was beginning to fall apart. the meat had very little flavour, the cheeseburger had the same type of patty within and a whole slice of onion, the majority of which had to be removed. this was comparative to a fast food burger, yet nearly double the price. my advice.... go to "in-n-out" for this type of fast food; its as fresh, less greasy and cheaper. so.... in short, ladies and gentlemen the search for san diegos best burger continues.......

the drunk, combative homeless couple camped by the 10th avenue side of the newhodad'sdowntown painted a different kind of local color than that seen through the rose-colored glasses of enthusiasts of the original joint in ocean beach.

yes, i'm saying it, they are just ok.. i have lived in ob for years and when i crave a burger i go to hodad's, but mostly because they are so close and there aren't many better places.
they are definitely better than in n out but are nowhere near the best burger ever. they are just ok.
the onion rings are great and the chocolate shake is awesome but i've had many better burgers. the patty is so thin you can barely find it between the garden that comes with the burger. the fries are awful. i really don't like steak fries, they are so thick athodad'sthat you might as well be eating a baked potato. the service is a guessing game, sometimes you get the nice hippie and sometimes you get the rude, "doing-you-a-favor-to-serve-you" guy. the think i hate though is that that douche bag from the food network did a show athodad'sand put his stamp there and ever since then the line has been about 30 minutes long.
it's good enough to fulfill a craving though when i'm not in the mood to make my own burgers.

bacon and cheese, baby.... if you like bacon cheeseburgers, hodad'sis the place to have one. right down by the water in ocean beach, this place is one of the burger meccas. the bacon is literally piled on the burger... it almost looks like another patty. plus, i think they boil the bacon before grilling it, so all the fat gets rendered down. it is truly amazing.

i'm sad i am only in the area a couple times a year, or i'd be able to goore often. when i stay in sd, i make sure to visithodad'sfor a bacon cheeseburger and a beer. thick juicy patty on a bin stacked high enough to have to cut horizontally. always have had friendly and fast device, although the staff is laid back, as it should be. i'm amazed at people giving poor reviews, all i can assume is that they are stuck up snobs and wouldn't know a good burger joint if it bit them in their uptight butt.

burgs, fries, o-rings. sat in the bus on a friday night. we each had a burger and we shared a full order of onion rings/fries. we ended up giving some homeless guy our leftover rings/fries, so i would recommend getting the half order for two hungry people. i was very satisfied with the cheeseburger, my lady was more satisfied with the fries and onion rings. they were definitely good. the burgers athodad'sare more substantial than the in-n-out burgs, but both are awesome.

sometimes restaurants live up to their hype and sometimes they are overhyped. i've never been tohodad'sand i was afraid that the hype for this place was too big. so my expectations weren't too high when i came to this joint, and i was pleasantly surpris
