chinatown
a place which deserves a 5 star rating for the food that they serve....
as they say it’s the law of attraction at work...our hotel was just a hop and a skip away from chinatown at manchester and so we trudged on my first day there in search of a place to eat...there are quite a few eateries here but i don’t know why we chose happy seasons...a clean bright cheerful place buzzing with activities and we were lucky to have got a table immediately after walking in not realizing all the other days even on weekdays we would have to wait in a queue to get in..
everything that we had was simply superb...it’s difficult to please people from kolkata who have grown up eating chinese food and this place stole our hearts....the heartwarming bowls of soups...(kolkata btw is the only city in india which houses not one but two chinatowns now...)
pork and vegetable soup...deep fried crispy pork chops...bakchoy...sliced pork with bamboo shoots...house special noodles were our. favourites here.....out of my nearly more than a week there excepting one day or two out dinner used to be here almost everyday...we had a lot of other dishes too but the above were our top choices...
i remember one weekend when we were waiting in a pretty long queue and elderly british gentleman asked loudly ‘ can anyone tell me why there is a queue only at this place even on weekdays? i’ve never been able to walk in straight and get a table for myself...’ well the answer is in the question itself...it’s the best best here and i found the food here asgoodas the food i’ve eaten growing up if not better and it’s truly soul satisfying...only service tends to be a bit slow when it’s peak time but you don’t mind coz you know what’s going to come on your table will make you forget the time you spent waiting....
a place worth being given a 5 star rating for the incredible food that they serve and the happiness that you derive from having it..
i’m going back again and am going to make sure to dine in there as many times i can coz chinese food is one food i can have daily alternating the dishes with the bowl of rice on my side....

on my recent visit to manchester i visited this place again....i rate the food here as the best the best and i’ll go so far as to even compare it with the restaurants at soho london

great experience where food was concerned but my only point was why charge 50 p for a bowl of chilli garlic sauce ..!!!??? don’t sauces come free with the food..!!!!! also the girls should be taught how to smile at customers and be a little less curt ...i mean for me service includes being polite ...the best person to us here is who we call aunty ...who is there in the evenings...super super efficient and we love her..

this is not like a super fancy restaurant. to be true, the place isn't beautiful or modern. this isn't a calm place neither, for a table, in a sunday lunch, you can wait like an half hour or more. but, the food - the real
chinese food, deserves all the time you'll wait. i strong recommend the roast duck and the fried rice. i can say it's the best chinese food i already taste. the price is fair for what you'll get!
p.s - the dim sum isn't quite sogoodlike the rest, so the next time i'll eat only the traditional chinese food.

it was late after pub-hopping and we were famished. hence we decided to try out some chinese. i did not have chinese for a long time and i was determined to try some duck this time.

happy seasons is a usual chinese eatery, not very posh, not dirty either. the seating seemed a bit crowded, but it did not matter as all we wanted was some food.

it was late at night so heavy was not an option, hence we ordered quarter duck and two soups, chicken-sweet-corn and seafood-tom-tum. i fancied some dim-sums but they would have taken at least 15 minutes, hence considered otherwise.

the soups were average, nothing great to talk about, and i felt the portion was small.

the duck was perfect though. great taste and crispiness, the rice pancakes were nice too. i was very much satisfied.

ambiance was ok sort of. like i said, the seating is crowded, and the place is full of students mostly. but then this is not your fine-dine restaurant.

service was not goodper se; could be improved a lot on the warmth factor.

authentic?. the food tastedgoodand the service was quick.
what i don't understand is that there are two menus, one obviously is directed to the "european" customer with the usual from sweet and sour to the sweet corn soup. well and then there is the menu which is directed to the chinese customer. i love chinese food but i like it "authentic"... hence i had to point to the neighbour table - as i too wanted some water spinach... with my roast pork as this veg was not in the "european" menu! it is a shame! when do chinese restaurant owners understand that a lot of customers do not like to usual sweet and sour chicken...with crispy noodles! they come because they want to eat authentic chinese food...like the chinese students who come to the happy season!
