taco truck taste in rva. habanero's is the closest that richmond comes to an authentic west coast taco truck. there's really no ambience as theplaceis the size of your kitchen, and no waitress service to speak of, but the food is just too damn good to ignore. if thisplacedoes something as well as the west coast, it is their tacos. loads of variety, lovingly poured into fresh corn tortillas. i often drive by a taco bell and ask myself - what are these people thinking when they can have food that is so much better tasting than that for close to what it is costing them to eat there? and can we stop calling taco bell mexican food? if you want mexican food, not laced with cheese, sour cream and needless condiments, then aplacelike habanero's is right up your alley. the shrimp tacos are loaded with shrimp, the chicken and beef dishes are perfectly seasoned, and the tilapia in the fish tacos is grilled and tender. i know some consider fried fish to be more authentic, but i prefer the grilled stuff. habaneros is mostly takeout, and we were well fed and satisfied for less than thirty dollars as a family of four. that's pretty darn good, and we are sure to return. i only hope that maybe they have enough guts to expand or to take on some of the vacated space next door as this is really cramped quarters for such a decent product. and don't let the name scare you, as you can have it spicy as you want it.
