too small for dinner. this is more of a taco shop with a few stools inside and a few patio tables outside. didn't stop to try the food since we were looking for a dinner restaurant.

totally authentic, and simply fantastic. forget the chain places, and don't even think of taco hell ... this is the real deal. the best, authentic mexican food i've had since living in san antonio, texas..

the tortas de lengua is life-changing and goes on my short list of "food so great it nearly made me cry."

you say you like real mexican? go. eat. a lot. you'll be glad you did ...

best tacos period!. i have drove past habenero's for a couple of years wanting to give this place a try and today i finally stopped, it did not disappoint. i had the ground beef and beef tongue tacos, perhaps....no...absolutely the best tacos i have ever had. if you have not tried this place and you are close it is a must stop!

taco truck taste in rva. habanero's is the closest that richmond comes to an authentic west coast taco truck. there's really no ambience as the place is the size of your kitchen, and no waitress service to speak of, but the food is just too damn good to ignore. if this place does something as well as the west coast, it is their tacos. loads of variety, lovingly poured into fresh corn tortillas. i often drive by a taco bell and ask myself - what are these people thinking when they can have food that is so much better tasting than that for close to what it is costing them to eat there? and can we stop calling taco bell mexican food? if you want mexican food, not laced with cheese, sour cream and needless condiments, then a place like habanero's is right up your alley. the shrimp tacos are loaded with shrimp, the chicken and beef dishes are perfectly seasoned, and the tilapia in the fish tacos is grilled and tender. i know some consider fried fish to be more authentic, but i prefer the grilled stuff. habaneros is mostly takeout, and we were well fed and satisfied for less than thirty dollars as a family of four. that's pretty darn good, and we are sure to return. i only hope that maybe they have enough guts to expand or to take on some of the vacated space next door as this is really cramped quarters for such a decent product. and don't let the name scare you, as you can have it spicy as you want it.

authentic yumminess. they have a food truck in richmond too but just know it has a limited menu. i think it is just tacos and burritos.

the actual place is small with cramped seating. plan for your order to go but everyone should still visit this place! the tacos, tamales and burritos are delicious! the lady who was taking my order had to pause a couple of time to understand my horrific non-hispanic pronounciation of all the food but that made it all the better. you can't get any more authentic than that.

below is a description of the food my husband and i had:

carne asada burrito: huge, meaty, delicious with the works.

chicken tamales: this has a very spicy green tomatillo sauce. if you are a spicy food lover, you will absolutely enjoy this kick!

carne asada, al pastor, chicken and tilapia tacos: the chicken taco i had from their food truck was precooked so it was dry and flavorless. it will probably be fresh at this location. move onto their delicious al pastor (marinated pork) and carne asada (steak). the fish taco looked yummier than it tasted and was pretty bland.

carne asada torta: it's like a mexican burger sub. we both enjoyed this and fell in love with the crisp, chewy bread.

i'll overlook being bumped in line by an hispanic regular customer because the tacos are the best i've tasted in richmond. decent horchata too. don't come here when you're in a hurry though.

a hole in the wall. this place is truly one of those hole in the wall type restaurants. i never knew it existed because you would not know it was there until you get right up on it. the place is so small, it is like cooking inside of a closet. however, the food that is produced in such a small, (not very busy considering the food is amazing) restaurant is intense. i have been looking for this exact flavor for as long as i can remember. no other mexican restaurant that claims they are "authentic" (come on, my neighbors come straight out of mexico and i have been spoiled with all of the tasty dishes they share, i know authentic. cooked over a fire and chopped up on a rock. that's what i'm looking for!) can add up to this place. the tortillas that the tacos are served with are corn, which are far more flavorful than chewy flour tortillas. not to mention, they are thin and flimsy making for an easier eat rather than having the tortilla rip and crumble. the fish and chicken tacos are my very favorite because they are served copped and topped with fresh cilantro and only slightly spicy salsa verde. their chips and guacamole are on point. their burritos should not even be compared or even in the same conversation as a place such as chipotle. habanero's burritos are just as big only taste a million times better. i'm not sure if it's because they are the sweetest little bunch of family restaurant owner's i know or the fact that their kitchen is so... modest yet can make such great food-- either way, the combination of love, work and experience work together to make some really good eats.

from the outside it is unassuming. the interior is equally parts small and utilitarian. it exists for no purpose, but to serve up super tasty food.

my coworkers and i steal away to this place for lunch quite often. we love everything on the menu. fish tacos and anything al pastor are my personal favorites. a little pricey for a taco, but then, this is no taco bell....

fish tacos. i absolutely inhaled these. they had a double layer of corn tortillas, a generous sprinkling of cilantro and onion, and sauteed chunks of tilapia. absolutely divine. i would submit a picture but they were gone too quickly!

just like home!. reminds me of taqueria in socal! authentic taste like the small taco shops that dotted the landscape of the suburbs of san diego. fresh ingredients and huge portions at a reasonable price. watch the jalapenos...if you need less heat, tell the owner. staff is welcoming and friendly. if you're in a hurry, call ahead and your meal will be waiting for you.
