maybe next time. i know, i said " likes it." for ambiance and service, i do. but the food really let me down. for starters, i ordered an iced tea. the server did not ask me the typical, "sweet or unsweet" so, i assumed unsweet. wrong! i got a big ol' gulp of, "would you like some tea with your sugar" moving on. we ordered the crab rangoon appetizer. we were off to a good start. warm, creamy and tasted like real crab! what a concept. we both ordered the philly cheesesteak with all the fixin's. my lunch date ordered it with both provolone and the traditional cheese whiz and i with only the provolone. for both of us the meat was really dry and lacked flavor. however, it helped his to have the whiz. on mine the meat was all glued together and stuck to the bun by a clump of provolone cheese. the peppers, onions and mushrooms had barely been sautéed. honestly, the mushrooms were raw and therefore spongy. not the caramelized onions and juicy 'shrooms i'm looking for on a philly. we also ordered fries and smoked gouda potato casserole. smoked cheese and potatoes - how can you go wrong? the casserole just wasn't a casserole in my opinion. thick sliced potatoes that were not cooked all the way through covered in a creamy béchamel-type sauce that only had a hint of smoke to it served in a bowl with some scallions on top. and, unfortunately, it was cold. to me, a casserole is baked so my hopes of warm, bubbly, smoky cheese were let down. okay, enough! there were many other interesting things on the menu. and the rave seems to be about the pizza. also, i saw a fried goat cheese pizza walk by that looked fabulous. obviously, many people who eat here love it. so, maybe it was an off day or maybe we ordered the wrong thing. i will definitely give it another try. the atmosphere is fun and that alone was worth the visit.
