unhappy valentine's day. yes, we had our first meal at grille 29 on maybe the busiestrestaurantnight of the year, so they deserve a pass for that. but the bigger problem was that they apparently hired a lot of inexperienced people for the wait staff. that's not the fault of the new people, that's a management problem. i asked the young man what bourbons they had and he said "j&b". i told him that was scotch, and he said, "yes, of course". i ordered a woodford and he told me that was a good choice. really bad faking it there. my wife ordered a white chocolate martini. i ordered the cheese plate appetizer. for dinner my wife ordered the seared ahi and the carpaccio salad. i asked the waiter's opinion on the filet mignon vs. a new york steak. he said that he liked a lot of marbling, so he recommended the new york. i didn't want to tell him that the new york is one of the leanest cuts. but i was leaning that way anyway, so i ordered the ny. someone brought a basket of bread. the drinks didn't come, and neither was any water offered. we waited a bit, then started to nibble on the bread without anything to wash it down. after about 15 minutes the drinks came. the martini was a minor work of art, really nice. after another 15 minutes, the appetizer plate came together with the salads. this all took up most of the table. it also made it very awkward to enjoy the appetizers in advance of the meal. we finished the appetizer, which was a generous serving of nice cheeses, and started on the salads when the entrees showed up. with a table full of unfinished food, we looked at the waitress helplessly, so she asked "do you want me to put this back in the heater for you". her style was a little more lawler's than fine dining. i said no, i don't want you to put it back in the heater, but we're not ready for that. she was confused by this, so i just said yes. we finished the salads and after a while the table was cleared. for the record, the salads were very good. the entrees returned a short while later. the waitress told me to be careful because my steak plate was very hot. i guess heat lamps aren't just for taco bell. they had apparently put the seared ahi in the refrigerator, because that plate was ice cold, rice, vegetables and all. what a shame, because the meals were probably very good at the time they were prepared. the place was busy, so we didn't complain, we just ate and left. very romantic evening, thanks grille 29.
