loved the huge almond/ chocolate/ special nutella croissants and the cheap ($2!) bagels. eclairs are a bit toosweetbut still delish! been there for 4 times in the last few months. have to come back for more. i lost count how many times i’ve been to this place. their recently opened northgate cafe is even more vibrant. make sure you’re early so you can still enjoy the popular almond croissants/hazelnut croissants/eclairs/quiches/fruit tarts/ focaccia 😁.

i went there on good advice from my sister on a cool morning on the hunt for the best sausage roll in brisbane with sourdough bread to take home and enormous array of hand made fresh pastries all in brisbane. so yes i crossed the river and she was right i had found the bomb. the mother of all french pastries and cakes bagels and sourdough. we divide into the sausage rolls first.... absolutely incredible!!!! the pastry so buttery, so light crispy and melt in your mouth deliciousness!!! yes i have finally found the best in brisbane. once u have had one of these, the rest just can’t stand up!!!
the raspberry velvet bar was asweetcake light a light pound, with fresh berries hidden in the first layer so when bitten in you have the sharpness of the cream cheese frosting the thesweetcake followed by the taste of the fresh very all in one bite, very good. the bagels were selling at hot cakes listed on a page were u could see what had sold out mine was very good not like a traditional jewish new york bagel i have tried but really excellent.
so to some it up the best in the business
worth the drive across the river!!!
a definite must to return... hint get there early!!! this place sells like a shop i’ve never seen before in this area of brisbane, set the alarm clock and bring a friend the coffee shop next door is excellent so u can sit and devour your tasty morsels!!!!jamiesgirl

a very popular bakery/patisserie located in morningside. this bakery has plenty of baked goods ranging from croissants (around $5) to slices of cake ($7). flour & chocolate offers a very tempting and mouthwatering range ofsweetand savoury goods. on this trip we ordered two cakes - passionfruit & red velvet. both cakes were very delicious but i much preferred the red velvet. the cakes are the perfect sweetness and have a very fluffy texture. the price point is quite average for similar types of bakeries. i would like to return and possibly try some of the croissants and other flavours of cakes next time.

should be noted that this is simply a bakery/patisserie not a cafe and does not provide seating.

flour & chocolate is the highly popular patisserie located in morningside. the near perfect 4.9/5 zomato scoring (at the time of visit) has prompted me to check it out with café girl imco. the small takeaway shop front displayed a large selection of artisan breads, pastries, cakes, savoury goods andsweettreats. soo much to choose from…soo many people! after seeking recommend from staff and a quick read of zomato reviews, our first order consists: chocolate and almond croissant, chocolate brownie and a sausage roll.

chocolate & almond croissant: great fragrant buttery scent with nice layers and crunchy outer crust. the buttery almond filling presents a strong flavour hit but toosweetfor my liking. the drop of chocolate on top of the croissant was well flavoured. as an overall package it was heavy on the palate with overpowering sweetness and oiliness. 3/5

chocolate brownie: average sized portion and simply presented. big chocolate flavours with hints of nuttiness. over powering sweetness made the brownie hard to finish and again too heavy on the palate. 2.5/5

sausage roll: made fresh daily and served hot. buttery and flaky outer crust presents a fragrant scent. the sausage filling was tender & juicy with big porky taste. perfectly balanced flavour and seasoning made this the star of the tastings. bravo! 4/5

after our questionable selection and somewhat surprising scoring, i decided to go for round two take away to seek a third opinion from mrs tomcat. i politely asked the lady behind the counter to choose a six pack of their gonut and doughnut selection which she delivered: white chocolate pasticcio, salted caramel, hazelnut chocolate and vanilla custard gonuts. two doughnuts were selected: lemon custard & milk chocolate.

gonuts: all gonuts presents a layered and crispy outer skin. generous amount of sugar was sprinkled on the gonuts which made each flavour overlysweetfor my liking. the gonut itself was on the tough, chewy and oily side. all flavoured fillings were skilfully executed with the salter caramel especially memorable with well-balanced saltiness vs sweetness. as an overall scoring for the four gonuts it’s an above average 3.5/5.

doughnuts: soft, fragrant and delicate with light buttery scent. the lemon custard filling was smooth, thick and flavoured to perfection. the milk chocolate filling wassweetwith big chocolate taste. paired with the soft and delicate outer dough i was taken to comfort food territory. as an overall package it was a good 4/5.

hint: flour and chocolate is takeaway only. wednesday & thursdays are doughnut days. strongly recommend their doughnut selections and sausage rolls.

glad to have finally stepped foot into flour & chocolate patisserie at morningside - after having breakfast at dandelion & driftwood, my dining companion and i decided to grab some sweets.

arriving at the patisserie, i was impressed by the array of pastries displayed in the cabinets. there was so much on offer: croissants, gonuts, bronuts, brownies, quiches, cakes and more.
telling myself to quickly 'make up my mind' cause there were customers constantly entering the patisserie and queueing up behind me. i decided on the chocolate and almond croissant, chocolate brownie (recommended by staff) and a sausage roll.

chocolate and almond croissant - the layering of the pastry was absolutely beautiful. the croissant was flaky and the special touch of icing sugar on top was appreciated. the croissant consisted chunks of sugary almond filling and chocolate. apart from finding the filling a tad toosweetfor myself, i enjoyed the pastry.

brownie - full on chocolate flavor, moist and contained pieces of choc chip. very rich and sweet, which didn't do my palate good. sadly, it wasn't to my liking.

sausage roll - the savory pastry snack was served warm, taken out from a small heated cabinet. the sausage roll had a nice and light layer of pastry that wrapped around the meat. definitely helped reduce the overwhelming sweetness on my taste buds.

wouldn't mind coming back to trying their artisan bread and sourdoughs!!

friendly and helpful staff!!

good stuff: a large selection of delights to choose from!! definitely worth a gander!!

well here we are finally at what has been one of the city's most prolific eateries. anyone who has been here long enough as heard nothing but a glowing reputation for it, and hearing all the praises for flour and chocolate - particularly upon their specialty items that they do from time to time. pound for pound, it does such a great job putting in so much effort into a tiny area; many cues have been taken from new york and paris for how to make an effective bakery in which people will want to actively visit. until now there has been an image when it comes to bakeries in this part of the world, and that will change completely upon taking a visit into here. to think all of it is under some plain-looking apartments on the major road in morningside, tucked away into the corner.

during a breakfast out with my brother-in-law, the idea was to find another place in place of getting the sweets from the original location. he had seen a sign pointing to another coffee place, asking me if i had been which i have (though much recommended to him). as a rarity for me, thinking well enough on my feet, i suddenly realised what part of town we were in and that an opportunity was right there to finally get to it. i am talking none other than the flour and chocolate patisserie, and having a rating that is not only over 4.0 but damn well nearly 5.0 is an offer that is hard to refuse. for the longest time it had been on the radar, however the real mystery how to finally tick it off the list. this was the perfect opportunity if there ever was one. so off it was to one of brisbane's most well-lauded eateries. without seeing any coffee in sight, at least not from a separate location, the idea was to take the treats home and make some coffee there.

all of this excitement comes from tiny area, and one without any seating outside. this is purely takeaway. even in saying that, the interior is quite pretty, with a definite look of timber being the choice building material. it mixes the pantry store - off to the side - with both the bakery and the dessert parlour with heaps of finesse. though what might be the best site is all of the treats and stuff on display. just from looking at it alone, customers whom need insulin will have to have it on them - the sugar rush is present from the sight alone, much less the aromas. and all of them look good, glistening and everything.

down to the bone, the service only really extends to being a take-away but do they ever make sure it is efficient and at a high quality. this can be really busy as i have been told, with the line going out the door. that i not surprised by in the least, and we will get to that later (spoilers: it is all about the food). lady luck must have been on our side, since there was not that many people in the store at the time so even while perusing there was attention from the staff. the young ladies here are very polite and friendly, and are erudite with customer service.

the menu that they have is massive, and it will suit anybody wanting a snack. doesn't matter if it is somethingsweetor something savoury, they have you covered; to go through them all will possibly take all day. to make it brief, the range includes several breakfast pastries, cupcakes and brownies, tarts, eclairs, danishes, puddings, and sausage rolls.

it is doesn't stop there either, since this stopoff is not just for getting some pastries either; there is a good range of freshly baked breads as well as a whole pantry full of different produce from cheeses, to home-made preserves, to their own home-made biscuits. having all of this really makes it something different, and will certainly remind some clientele of paris.

then there is not to mention the daily specials they have each week, where it is doughnuts on wednesday, gonuts/bronuts on thursday, bagels and brownies on friday, foccacia on satuday/sunday, and come sunday it is all a surprise. whatever your opinion about this place is, what it definitely isn't is boring. and put it another way, sometimes it is good to live on the other side of town to a favourite gem such as this since many visits would have already happened as is with me involved.

finally, getting to the good stuff which is the food, both of us ordered a pastry each. for my brother-in-law, it was a pistachio eclair and for me it ended up being a chocolate-almond croissant. both of these were just as good as each other, and for different reasons as well. the custard in the eclair was thick and delicious, and definitely had a slightly nutty taste. the pastry was rich, buttery and moreish, then we get the great finish with the chocolate on top. it was essentially a well-made eclair, which only needs a few words to describe it. as does the croissant. if they did have a pain au chocolat, that was going to be the order - which they did, and they had several varieties. within less than a second from hearing there was an choc-almond one that was my confirmed order. it was delicious. everything that is great about the almond croissant is here, with the added element of some cocoa into the almond butter. that is all that is needed to sell this baby on the market. both great sweets, both tasty treats.

to make it even better, on the counter they offer samples of a couple of items that are available. there was one chocolate cake which i didn't get the name of, and a baguette (complete with butter to spread). the cake was very good, and i am kicking myself for not asking what it was because it was that good. the texture of it was rich and creamy, made with chocolate that quite dark. you would not much of it to be satisfied. and the baguette was fresh and crusty, plus it had well-churned butter to spread on it. in fact, it would well be in place in a fancy french restaurant.

this is certainly worthy of the hype that it receives in many ways. all of the sweets are constantly being prepared right in the backroom, not even 10 meters away from the front counter. from that, there is a constant buzz and new treats are being readily made to order. at many times there is a line that goes right out the door, or at least it would be hard to fit into the shop area at the busiest of times; all of it is really a crapshoot when it comes down to it - when the two of us were there it was quick and efficient. all of it combined to make something that is unlike a lot of other bakeries and patisseries that are around, and it is all the better because of it.

when giving out ratings, i attempt to make it as objective as i can and not in regarding what the eatery is along with the whole experience of the place. that doesn't mean biases will rear their heads from time to time, however as a whole it takes everything there is and isn't into account. this is said because a 4.0 rating to one of the most loved places on the east side might sound low, but in many ways it definitely would get a lot better. for one, there is not anywhere to sit which might disappoint some customers and for me coffee is part and parcel of having a goodsweettreat which was not offered here. if so, that might well have jumped it up to a 4.5 - perhaps even nearing a 5.0. for what it is worth, this is basically as good as it gets for asweettreat.

tl;dr: if you want that parisian, or new yorker, or wherever is trendy experience with lining up for a specialised item - in this case asweettreat - this is about as close as it will get in brisbane. the produce is as good as it gets, it is exciting with offering different specials on certain days, and there is something lively about it. even if only once, this definitely needs to be ticked off the list, foodie or non-foodie, resident or visitor. now i can officially say i have been.

incredibly delicious treats are what you will find at flour and chocolate! decided to drive over from the northside and it was worth it! nothing is sicklysweetwhich is a balance i look for and the quiche's were so delicious with amazing pastry. i took my mum who has more of a savoury tooth and not really into patisseries, but now she is planning a second trip to go haam on the blondies and danishes, and of course try the sausage roles she heard the girls in line rave about!

try the almond croissant - it'll change your life.  perfect texture, not toosweetand a decent size. i also tried the carroway seed and salt bagel. lovely consistency in the crumb and the flavour is subtle but delicious.  i purchased a vanilla slice for my dad and he bestowed what is perhaps the greatest compliment; it tasted just like his mother's.  thanks flour and chocolate for bringing that food memory of his german/hungarian heritage to life.

i decided to pay a visit to this bakery not too long ago, after someone brought along some mini éclairs made by them to a morning tea (they were scrumptious little things, obviously). i heard that this bakery is so popular that they sell out of their goodies early, so, perhaps due to my glee in finding them still quite well-stocked towards closing time on the sunday that i went, i went a bit overboard and bought a little bit of everything (photo shows a few of these items). service was friendly.

my sister reckons the croissant and danish are the best she's had in brisbane, and the croissants comparable to those she had in france. for me, they were nice enough but i wouldn't say they're the best ones i've ever had - the ones in france are definitely superior (depends where you go, i guess), and there are better croissants to be had elsewhere in aus - but, the fruit and custard tarts are amazing. really nicely madesweetshortcrust pastry. i'd go back just for them.

finally had an opportunity to travel all the way to morningside, to have a taste of this new craze that are cronuts! they're a mix between a croissant, and a donut. from my knowledge, flour & chocolate are the only source in brisbane that sell anything like the original that comes from new york. we spotted the array of cronuts through their front display window, and the moment we went into the bakery, my best mate and i both looked at each other and said how delicious the small bakery smelt. they have heaps of other baked goods in store, fromsweetto savoury, but we were here for one reason only!  on this day, the available flavours were lamington inspired, a chocolate ganache topped cronut, a salted caramel flavoured, and a spiced cronut. i settled for two: the salted caramel and chocolate. it was almost 3 hours until i got home after a morning out, and the cronuts had endured quite a journey through heat and mishandling. the layers inside the cronut are meant to resemble the buttery

there's plenty more to pick and choose from.  pan au chocolate, petite little tartlets, banoffee doughnuts, savoury tarts and the elusive cronut which i've yet to meet as it's baked on thursdays.  as you read this, i'll be traipsing back for some more of those bagels. if they don't have thesweetonion, i'm sure they'll have some equally delicious flavour.

cronut. delicious. crunchy on the outside and deliciously soft and flaky on the inside. it's definitely a treat. once you bite into it, flakes literally go flying. the texture as the name suggest really does resemble that of a croissant - as it's a flavoured cronut, layered in between, is a deliciouslysweetlayer of caramel.
