flour and chocolate patisserie http://www.flourandchocolate.com.au/ this is the story of just what length i would go to forgoodfood. i follow flour and chocolate on instagram and their feed is like baking inception for my mind. every day, i log on and check their uploads and get drawn in by tantalizing photos of freshly baked brownies, golden cronuts (they call them gonuts) and sugar-crusted donuts. seeing them on screen is one thing. actually buying them is a whole other ball game. i was most interested in the donuts and gonuts and these are made on wednesday and thursday respectively. furthermore, due to demand they tend to be sold out quite early on so you aren't guaranteed anything. it was a work of tactics and timing to score what i wanted. flour and chocolate is located on wynnum road in morningside, which is a bit of a drive for me, made worst by the fact that it's not really on the way to or from anywhere else that i go to. i made a special trip there last week after learning on the down low through instagram that they would be making donuts on friday as well. it was quiiiiittteee an adventure. imagine driving through east brisbane opposite morning peak traffic, which would have been fine if i didn't miss a turn and then have to go with the peak traffic for a block. argh, what a nightmare. i finally got to flour and chocolate and was soothed by its welcoming glow and racks upon racks of baked goods. there was a slight queue but it was actually an ideal wait because it allowed me some time to decide what i wanted to buy. when it was my turn to order, i had a clear idea and chose a couple of donuts, a savoury tart and a flourless brownie. vanilla custard and salted caramel filled donuts there's no space to eat food on the premise so i unraveled my goodies in my car and scoffed down half a donut right then and there. i tried the vanilla custard-filled donut for myself. the donut part was soft and fluffy with just the right amount of chew. bite shot of custard

went here during an impromptu visit in the area and felt almost obliged to visit due to the high ratings on zomato.

following a recommendation from a friend who works nearby, i bought the small flourless cake. it was not too sweet, pleasant chocolate flavour with agoodcrunch of toffee.

busy shop. casual ambience. friendly staff.

a lovely little bakery and patisserie. will be back to try other goodies.

i went there ongoodadvice from my sister on a cool morning on the hunt for the best sausage roll in brisbane with sourdough bread to take home and enormous array of hand made fresh pastries all in brisbane. so yes i crossed the river and she was right i had found the bomb. the mother of all french pastries and cakes bagels and sourdough. we divide into the sausage rolls first.... absolutely incredible!!!! the pastry so buttery, so light crispy and melt in your mouth deliciousness!!! yes i have finally found the best in brisbane. once u have had one of these, the rest just can’t stand up!!!
the raspberry velvet bar was a sweet cake light a light pound, with fresh berries hidden in the first layer so when bitten in you have the sharpness of the cream cheese frosting the the sweet cake followed by the taste of the fresh very all in one bite, very good. the bagels were selling at hot cakes listed on a page were u could see what had sold out mine was verygoodnot like a traditional jewish new york bagel i have tried but really excellent.
so to some it up the best in the business
worth the drive across the river!!!
a definite must to return... hint get there early!!! this place sells like a shop i’ve never seen before in this area of brisbane, set the alarm clock and bring a friend the coffee shop next door is excellent so u can sit and devour your tasty morsels!!!!jamiesgirl

flour & chocolate is the highly popular patisserie located in morningside. the near perfect 4.9/5 zomato scoring (at the time of visit) has prompted me to check it out with café girl imco. the small takeaway shop front displayed a large selection of artisan breads, pastries, cakes, savoury goods and sweet treats. soo much to choose from…soo many people! after seeking recommend from staff and a quick read of zomato reviews, our first order consists: chocolate and almond croissant, chocolate brownie and a sausage roll.

chocolate & almond croissant: great fragrant buttery scent with nice layers and crunchy outer crust. the buttery almond filling presents a strong flavour hit but too sweet for my liking. the drop of chocolate on top of the croissant was well flavoured. as an overall package it was heavy on the palate with overpowering sweetness and oiliness. 3/5

chocolate brownie: average sized portion and simply presented. big chocolate flavours with hints of nuttiness. over powering sweetness made the brownie hard to finish and again too heavy on the palate. 2.5/5

sausage roll: made fresh daily and served hot. buttery and flaky outer crust presents a fragrant scent. the sausage filling was tender & juicy with big porky taste. perfectly balanced flavour and seasoning made this the star of the tastings. bravo! 4/5

after our questionable selection and somewhat surprising scoring, i decided to go for round two take away to seek a third opinion from mrs tomcat. i politely asked the lady behind the counter to choose a six pack of their gonut and doughnut selection which she delivered: white chocolate pasticcio, salted caramel, hazelnut chocolate and vanilla custard gonuts. two doughnuts were selected: lemon custard & milk chocolate.

gonuts: all gonuts presents a layered and crispy outer skin. generous amount of sugar was sprinkled on the gonuts which made each flavour overly sweet for my liking. the gonut itself was on the tough, chewy and oily side. all flavoured fillings were skilfully executed with the salter caramel especially memorable with well-balanced saltiness vs sweetness. as an overall scoring for the four gonuts it’s an above average 3.5/5.

doughnuts: soft, fragrant and delicate with light buttery scent. the lemon custard filling was smooth, thick and flavoured to perfection. the milk chocolate filling was sweet with big chocolate taste. paired with the soft and delicate outer dough i was taken to comfort food territory. as an overall package it was agood4/5.

hint: flour and chocolate is takeaway only. wednesday & thursdays are doughnut days. strongly recommend their doughnut selections and sausage rolls.

well here we are finally at what has been one of the city's most prolific eateries. anyone who has been here long enough as heard nothing but a glowing reputation for it, and hearing all the praises for flour and chocolate - particularly upon their specialty items that they do from time to time. pound for pound, it does such a great job putting in so much effort into a tiny area; many cues have been taken from new york and paris for how to make an effective bakery in which people will want to actively visit. until now there has been an image when it comes to bakeries in this part of the world, and that will change completely upon taking a visit into here. to think all of it is under some plain-looking apartments on the major road in morningside, tucked away into the corner.

during a breakfast out with my brother-in-law, the idea was to find another place in place of getting the sweets from the original location. he had seen a sign pointing to another coffee place, asking me if i had been which i have (though much recommended to him). as a rarity for me, thinking well enough on my feet, i suddenly realised what part of town we were in and that an opportunity was right there to finally get to it. i am talking none other than the flour and chocolate patisserie, and having a rating that is not only over 4.0 but damn well nearly 5.0 is an offer that is hard to refuse. for the longest time it had been on the radar, however the real mystery how to finally tick it off the list. this was the perfect opportunity if there ever was one. so off it was to one of brisbane's most well-lauded eateries. without seeing any coffee in sight, at least not from a separate location, the idea was to take the treats home and make some coffee there.

all of this excitement comes from tiny area, and one without any seating outside. this is purely takeaway. even in saying that, the interior is quite pretty, with a definite look of timber being the choice building material. it mixes the pantry store - off to the side - with both the bakery and the dessert parlour with heaps of finesse. though what might be the best site is all of the treats and stuff on display. just from looking at it alone, customers whom need insulin will have to have it on them - the sugar rush is present from the sight alone, much less the aromas. and all of them look good, glistening and everything.

down to the bone, the service only really extends to being a take-away but do they ever make sure it is efficient and at a high quality. this can be really busy as i have been told, with the line going out the door. that i not surprised by in the least, and we will get to that later (spoilers: it is all about the food). lady luck must have been on our side, since there was not that many people in the store at the time so even while perusing there was attention from the staff. the young ladies here are very polite and friendly, and are erudite with customer service.

the menu that they have is massive, and it will suit anybody wanting a snack. doesn't matter if it is something sweet or something savoury, they have you covered; to go through them all will possibly take all day. to make it brief, the range includes several breakfast pastries, cupcakes and brownies, tarts, eclairs, danishes, puddings, and sausage rolls.

it is doesn't stop there either, since this stopoff is not just for getting some pastries either; there is agoodrange of freshly baked breads as well as a whole pantry full of different produce from cheeses, to home-made preserves, to their own home-made biscuits. having all of this really makes it something different, and will certainly remind some clientele of paris.

then there is not to mention the daily specials they have each week, where it is doughnuts on wednesday, gonuts/bronuts on thursday, bagels and brownies on friday, foccacia on satuday/sunday, and come sunday it is all a surprise. whatever your opinion about this place is, what it definitely isn't is boring. and put it another way, sometimes it isgoodto live on the other side of town to a favourite gem such as this since many visits would have already happened as is with me involved.

finally, getting to thegoodstuff which is the food, both of us ordered a pastry each. for my brother-in-law, it was a pistachio eclair and for me it ended up being a chocolate-almond croissant. both of these were just asgoodas each other, and for different reasons as well. the custard in the eclair was thick and delicious, and definitely had a slightly nutty taste. the pastry was rich, buttery and moreish, then we get the great finish with the chocolate on top. it was essentially a well-made eclair, which only needs a few words to describe it. as does the croissant. if they did have a pain au chocolat, that was going to be the order - which they did, and they had several varieties. within less than a second from hearing there was an choc-almond one that was my confirmed order. it was delicious. everything that is great about the almond croissant is here, with the added element of some cocoa into the almond butter. that is all that is needed to sell this baby on the market. both great sweets, both tasty treats.

to make it even better, on the counter they offer samples of a couple of items that are available. there was one chocolate cake which i didn't get the name of, and a baguette (complete with butter to spread). the cake was very good, and i am kicking myself for not asking what it was because it was that good. the texture of it was rich and creamy, made with chocolate that quite dark. you would not much of it to be satisfied. and the baguette was fresh and crusty, plus it had well-churned butter to spread on it. in fact, it would well be in place in a fancy french restaurant.

this is certainly worthy of the hype that it receives in many ways. all of the sweets are constantly being prepared right in the backroom, not even 10 meters away from the front counter. from that, there is a constant buzz and new treats are being readily made to order. at many times there is a line that goes right out the door, or at least it would be hard to fit into the shop area at the busiest of times; all of it is really a crapshoot when it comes down to it - when the two of us were there it was quick and efficient. all of it combined to make something that is unlike a lot of other bakeries and patisseries that are around, and it is all the better because of it.

when giving out ratings, i attempt to make it as objective as i can and not in regarding what the eatery is along with the whole experience of the place. that doesn't mean biases will rear their heads from time to time, however as a whole it takes everything there is and isn't into account. this is said because a 4.0 rating to one of the most loved places on the east side might sound low, but in many ways it definitely would get a lot better. for one, there is not anywhere to sit which might disappoint some customers and for me coffee is part and parcel of having agoodsweet treat which was not offered here. if so, that might well have jumped it up to a 4.5 - perhaps even nearing a 5.0. for what it is worth, this is basically asgoodas it gets for a sweet treat.

tl;dr: if you want that parisian, or new yorker, or wherever is trendy experience with lining up for a specialised item - in this case a sweet treat - this is about as close as it will get in brisbane. the produce is asgoodas it gets, it is exciting with offering different specials on certain days, and there is something lively about it. even if only once, this definitely needs to be ticked off the list, foodie or non-foodie, resident or visitor. now i can officially say i have been.

morningside sweets. used to live near here many years ago when the onlygoodthings were the subway and scherhazade (both are still there). went with racer x at the wheel for a drive over to the east side to stop here. the mini caramel and walnut tart was truly excellent and the vanilla custard eclair was great as well. got some melting moments to go and while the biscuit was good, a little underwhelming on the icing. one completely fell apart upon biting into it. friendly and proactive service and lots of benches around the area if you want to stop and eat and don't mind the wynnum road traffic.

can't stop going back. unfortunately i no longer live a few minutes drive from this shop full of heavenly delights but when i accepted a dinner invitation from my gastronomically trained sister i knew here was the place to find dessert.
all our important family celebration cakes purchased in the last year have been brought from this shop. that day was not an acception to the rule.
i ordered a chocolate raspberry roulade that truely had been created by a master. my sister described it this way....." it's like the chef has figured out how to bake a chocolate mousse then wrap it around fresh slightly tart raspberries". it was beautiful.
we have tried a number of their goods but i guess i still love the classics. agoodpastry, it doesn't get much better than this

love it. had heard somegoodstories about this place but we live on the northside & don't go to morningside often. had some things to do in the vicinity and was not disappointed when we dropped in to flour & chocolate. the variety on offer was great (although i do wish they had cronuts on the weekend..............). my wife had a croissant and i had a piece of turkish delight chocolate cake. yum. yum. they don't do coffee but there is a coffee shop nearby which uses elixir coffee. all up, a very nice morning tea. the staff at flour & chocolate are absolutely great (the staff at the coffee shop also great :-) ).

amazing patisserie. we queued to get in to a pierre herme in paris and my wife compared that to flour & chocolate. what else can i say?

my chocolate and hazelnut bar was moist, rich and delicious. my wife's vanilla slice ........ i'm pretty sure it wasgoodsince she seemed to drift off and didn't respond to me for a while afterwards. my daughter loved the little mice éclair she had as well.

lovely staff, quality pastries and close to our house.a tick in every box.

beautiful little bakery. tried the cronuts and salted caramel brownie. all in all good, but cronut was more just a croissant in a donut shape rather than a hybrid of a donut and croissant (which is what the original is like). flourless brownie wasgoodbut you couldn't really taste the salted caramel in it.

dismayed. i was sad to the products of at least two well known bakeries/ patisseries in brisbane totally replicated in this shop. the owner of this store has worked in both. whilst the products are of agoodquality, it is such a shame that they trading off the hard work of others. looking at their facebook page is like looking at the products of these other businesses- right even down to the presentation.i hope this business will have the courage to start developing a style of its own, and give the people of brisbane some honesty.
