on walking in you can feel the vibe of the place. the staff are friendly and helpful. we had a table reserved near the bar and fairly central in the restaurant. themenuis written in chalk on the wall and as items run out they are rubbed out. we were advised to try a couple of cheaper meals and one large meal as a guide for the evening. we went for the ceviche, pulled pork terrine and ghetto beef. these were all delightful. the ceviche was amazing. it was refreshing and full of heat but the chi

the energy of eightysix engulfed us as we approached. it was only 6.30 on a saturday night but the restaurant was packed, customers and music spilled out onto the street. after squeezing through the front door, we sat on child-sized bar stools at a communal bench along the street-facing window. the two couples either side of us had already claimed their territory, making it impossible for us newcomers to sit between them or remotely close to the bench. luckily one of the outgoing owners saw our predicament and found us a table for 2 outside then randomly offered me his jacket to wear in case it got too cold. the casual friendliness of the staff continued when our waiter sat at our table to recommend a malbec to drink as well as the ideal number of courses to share. eightysix’smenuis scrawled across blackboards running the length of the restaurant. as we couldn’t see them from our outside table, we had to walk around a lively obstacle of guests and tables to read it, a unique experien

braddon has no shortage of fantastic food options, and eightysix is right up the top of my list of restaurants to get a couple of share plates and drinks. bookings are recommended, as the restaurant tends to be busy, even during weeknights. . themenuis truly modern australian; ranging from asian influences to a handful of pasta dishes, and everything else in-between.

exceptional eatingmenuon the indie side of town.

the potato scallops were such a guilty pleasure, crispy and golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside and paired with a well seasoned hollandaise sauce. the duck buns were criminally small for the delicious flavour. the pumpkin tortellini was moreishly sweet and paired perfectly with the burnt butter and sage sauce. the witlof salad was underwhelming. the beef cheeks were mouthwatering and fell apart with the lightest touch; well accompanied by the mash. exceptional desserts in the popcorn sundae and the popping candy lemon curd tart; both dishes with hidden wow factors which added to their quality - certainly a great way to end the meal.

inviting and intimate atmosphere with attentive staff who were not intrusive.

typical of all good canberra restaurants if you are willing to pay big, the food is top notch.

this would probably be closer to a 3.5 if possible.
anyway came here on thursday evening with a friend with no booking, it wasn't busy anyway and we were quickly seated and jackets placed into the cloak room.
my friend had been here twice previously so expectations were high. however, price had increased from her last venture but it wasn't much of an issue. we decided to have the $80 chef'smenuwith a few changes by swapping in the lamb instead of another dish and few glasses of wine. apologies in advance if i do not name these dishes correctly.

1. toasted bread with garlic oil, serrano ham and shaved truffle - tasted delicious. the oil was fragrant and bread crunchy, however, i did not realise the shaved black noodle like objects were meant to be truffle, if it was the 5/5 became a 3.5/5 as the amount of truffle should've been pungent.
2. steak tartare served on prawn crackers - i was a bit cautious at first but this was delicious, the crispiness of the cracker balanced perfectly with the creaminess of the tartare 5/5
3. cauliflower salad (of arabic origin(?) - great palate cleanser with fresh herbs and sweet dates. broke it up a bit, but expected more pizazz 3.5/5
4. gnocchi with truffle - this was the dish my friend was raving about but then disappointed. the gnocchi was soft pillows of pasta and the sauce rich and creamy but again the truffle was a let down as the aroma simply wasn't there. the waiter told us that they were truffles sourced locally and didn't seem too happy with the feedback. 3.5/5
5. pumpkin ravioli - the pasta was made well but i found the sauce too sweet for my liking, like sugar was added to it. 3/5, my friend reckons this is a 3.5/5
6. lamb with pearl couscous - super rich and hearty, fall off the bone meat. should've had some side vegetables to accompany it to break the heaviness of the dish. 4/5
7. well my friend was determined to have the rumbaba but the waiter was so good at selling the pina colada meringue she swapped her order. we got both anyway. the rumbaba was light a fluffy and balanced well with the cream and tartness of the strawberries (4.5/5) but the the pina colada meringue stole the show. the meringue was light and crisp and passionfruit sorbet had the right amount of sweet and sourness to cleanse the palate. it was delicious 5/5.

service was good overall besides the small drama about the truffles and wine was fairly priced at this type of venue. would i come back again? depends of the food items i guess

the $86 all you can eat option is great.menuisn’t particularly cheap so you definitely get your money’s worth. good selection of entrees, mains and desserts. service was good, yet felt as though we were being a bit rushed. the ceviche was incredible, so fresh and flavourful. beetroot salmon was also delicious, as were the fish bao buns. i didn’t care much for the wafers and felt the cauliflower dish was very overwhelmed with seasoning in a bad way. the ravioli was wonderful, but the caramel tart was the winner, a great serving size and so tasty.

very nice open restaurant with open kitchen.menuis succinct and brief. unique combination and flavours which you would expect from a fine dining restaurant. service is excellent. bring your own flashlight as light is extremely dim making reading menus very difficult.

nice ambience and food but hugely overpriced for serving portions. we were content with our initial orders from the top half of themenubut the waitress made us feel like we had to order more. we ordered the lamb pasta - $35 for four pieces of pasta? you've got to be joking. it left a very bad taste in our mouth and we won't be back.

christine manfield is one of those chefs. known as the ‘godmother of asian fusion cookery’, she’s owned highly acclaimed restaurants in sydney and london, has authored numerous books, has her own range of spice pastes, and is famous for her seductive desserts. since 2013, she’s also been running ‘pop up’ events, which has brought her to braddon restaurant eightysix a couple of times now.

christine’s most recent stint at eightysix was earlier this month, taking over the kitchen for 4 dinner and 3 lunch services. we visited on saturday night for the last dinner service, which saw a packed house for both sittings.

themenuhad an extensive selection of asian-inspired share plates (17 amazing-sounding dishes to choose from, plus 5 desserts). before even going into the food, i really have to take my hat off to the eightysix kitchen for being able to learn and deliver a completely newmenu(no doubt in a short period of time) and to the front of house staff for their seamless transition to it as well.

after the dessert diva, christine manfield, took over the eightysix kitchen to produce and deliver some of her amazing signature desserts last year, i was eager to go back this year when it was announced that she would not only produce more desserts, but take over the lunch/dinnermenufor a few days. this year, the theme was asian with dishes such as sichuan wallaby tartare, salted duck egg with sticky rice cakes, strange flavour chicken noodles and tea smoked duck. there were also 5 desserts this time compared to 4 last year. a group of us booked into a lunch time session and ordered a few dishes to share with the notion that we were really waiting for dessert.

i ate here for the first time on wednesday night with a friend from interstate. we were seated at the bar so we could watch the kitchen in action. great move!the chef's were giving us great tips and watching all that amazing food being prepared was making me think of the next time i go there.the food we ordered was delicious and well sized - duck buns, followed by chicken liver pate and oxtail with papardelle. we ran out of room for dessert or we would have been trying them.the staff were great. friendly and happy to be there, as well as providing excellent service.themenuprices were definitely justified.i will definitely be going back to eightysix.
