durant's is a classic. this is just one of those places you need to try if you're in phoenix. hanging out at the bar you run into some interesting people, and the food is consistently good. the dark wood, booths and decor reminds you of the old timesteakand seafood places your parents took you to as a kid, but now you can appreciate the sophistication. and they weren't all nearly as good as durant's. the steaks are well above average, the vegetables and seafood are fresh and the atmosphere is cassic. recommended for a special date, business meeting or just a good evening on the town.

this was my first visit to durant's, the storied, central phoenix restaurant that provides diners with a snapshot of 1950s and 60s arizona power, politics and culture. our guide, a relatively recent transplant with close friends who are long-time residents with strong ties to phoenix, ushered us into the establishment through the kitchen. although durant's main entrance faces central avenue, the preferred entrance after nearly 67 years of operation remains in the back.

as we stepped out of the kitchen into the main dining room, it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to the mid-centurysteakhouse motif. red wall coverings, dark wood, high-backed leather booths and subdued lighting still reflect a time when the proprietor, local gambler, jack durant presided over the smoke-filled, backroom center of arizona legal, political and economic power.

it's impossible at this point to separate fact from fiction, but whether the restaurant's fabled mob connections are accurate or not, nobody disputes that durant's was a favorite watering-hole for the rich, famous, and politically powerful.

although durant died in 1987 and the locally celebrated film starring tom sizemore, "durant's never closes" chronicling his role in phoenix history is barely a footnote on imdb, jack durant and his restaurant still captures our imagination as we gluttonously ignore the advice of our cardiologist to become one with this bigger-than-life slice of phoenix history.

just off the plane and not yet hungry enough for a stroll through this carnivorous wonderland, the three of us opted to share a grilled shrimp & dungeness crab louie salad ($38.25). recognizing that our waiter was tied-up at another table where he was patiently guiding a mother/daughter team of tourists through the extensive luncheon menu, another member of the waitstaff took our beverage orders.

although smoke-free today, little else has changed since the surgeon general's early warnings eventually snuffed-out the last cigarette and expensive cigar at durant's and i was eager to try one of their classic martinis. the result was a perfectly chilled, ultra-dry, bombay sapphire martini ($14) served "a little dirty," in a classic martini glass with four blue cheese-filled olives on a small plate. my less adventurous companions ordered a wonderful glass of sauvignon blanc and iced tea, respectively, but unabashedly requested a sip of my martini.

when our waiter was able to break-free, he stopped by to reassure us and returned with our drinks and a wonderful, freshly-baked bread dish presented in a sea of melted butter, olive oil and herbs to complement our drinks.

although our server may have secretly viewed our decision to split an entree salad three-ways with disdain, he complied without the slightest hint of emotion. likewise, our request to substitute a continental dressing (roquefort or blue cheese layered over a vinaigrette with a hint of balsamic dressing) in lieu of the standard thousand island dressing usually associated with a "louis" was met professionally with exactly the right questions to assure no errors on the part of the kitchen. crisp, and perfectly chilled, our salad was topped with three large grilled shrimp and supplemented with generous servings of shrimp meat and dungeness crab. this was, hands-down, the best entree salad i have ever consumed.

we topped-off this perfect luncheon experience with a generous slice of new york style cheesecake ($10) and coffee. i'm a cheesecake snob, and while my view of a perfect cheesecake can only come from the kitchens of either carnegie's or katz deli in manhattan, i found the flavor, if not the texture of durant's version, spectacular.

leaving a well-earned 25 percent tip for our shared entree salad, modest bar bill and shared dessert tapped my wallet for a c-note, so there's no other way to say this: "durant's is expensive, but worth every penny."

while i may need to save my pennies, i'm already looking forward to dinner at this fantastic slice of phoenix living history.

think old time steakhouse, dark, deep reds, and white table clothes....then you have this place down. we had a party of 9 and service was really good. unfortunately, the food was just so-so. onesteakwas so tough, our guest sent it back and it was comped. the stone crab apps were tasteless. my honey glazed salmon was very good and i shared with some of the guest. it was a nice experience that i can say: been there, done that.

what a terrible experience. scheduled a birthday dinner and had an awful experience. i had high expectations for this legendary phoenix establishment. clear they are past their prime, just as mysteakwas cooked well past the desired level. take two on thesteakresulted in a nearly rare piece of meat that wasn't even in the neighborhood of medium well. i hate having to send food back, but these two attempts were not even close to the mark. ruins the whole dining experience when two members of the party are eating, offering to share their food, etc. good news was their service recovery....i didn't have to pay for thesteaki never ate. wow!

way overpriced! for a so-so dinner. i had friends visiting from out of town. with 1 bottle of wine, 3 steaks, and 1 after dinner drink the bill was almost $500 with tip for 3 people.

they could not transfer the bar bill to our table so this did not include a drink before dinner. this is just poor service.

service was ok, but not great. food was ok, but not great. atmosphere is great for an "old school"steakhouse.

the maître d' ran around all night with a disapproving "turd under his nose" look while appearing to do nothing. he made us feel genuinely unwelcome. for this price the dinner should have been spectacular. it was not! i will not be going back. i would recommend not going to durants. it was quite a disappointment.

nowhere else for mysteakmoney. waiters attend regularly scheduled wine training. the steaks are outstanding. the martinis, legend. reviewers who are disappointed in the non-steak entrees...what were you thinking? reviewers who whine about the prices, you should have done your homework. if there's ever a problem with the meal or service, it's rectified immediately. nothing compares to durant's. they've earned their good name and reputation. i prefer a booth in the bar because i like its feel and because the dining room can get a little noisy. i don't need the 'beautiful peoples' allures of n. scottsdale or pseudo- avante garde decor. i always receive top-notch service and outstanding food at durant's, even if i can't afford to go with the frequency i'd wish. dp

long-time hungry customer. we have been enjoying durant's since 1977. if you want a realsteakplace, this is it! when we lived in central phx we we there almost weekly. our kids grew up saying "hi" to ernie as we entered the kitchen entrance, making calls from the phone booth, on their great food and napping between dinner and dessert in booth 55, our favorite! now that we have moved further away, we make it a point to try to get there monthly. we can't go too long between orders of oysters rock and creme bruele' and, of course, their wonderful prime rib and filet's! we enjoyed their 50th and just recently their 60th anniversary celebration! hope to celebrate number 70 too! if you want the real thing, this is the place to go!

if you like old, retro restaurants that harken back to simpler times like i do you should like walking in to durant's. the entry is surprisingly through the kitchen! which could be considered eclectic or bizarre--more bizarre for me. it was an opportunity to see the kitchen and waive uncertainly to the cook's and wait staff. i was looking forward to this classicsteakhouse but was left disappointed like some other reviewers. i ordered a martini which was excellent, but asked for three olives but only received two which seemed to exemplify my waiter--apeared attentive, but wasn't. the food was preceded by some vegetables, covered with ice and some ranch dressing. they serve a garlic bread that is covered with garlic and what i believe to be scallion, which i enjoyed. i ordered the prime rib, medium rare, a salad, and a baked potato. the salad, with the house french vinaigrette was excellent. i thought things were going pretty well until my prime rib arrived. much more medium than medium rare and luke warm. same for the baked potato. the texture and flavor of the meat was good, but the temperature and slow delivery ruined it. i finished the meal with coffee, which was excellent although not refilled. over all the food was over-priced for the quality and did not live up to expectations. try someplace else in phoenix!

fine dining? that's a laugh. my wife and i went to durant's for the first and last time on saturday night. to say it was disappointing would be a major understatement. we were seated at a too small table in a too crowded dining room. next to us was a group of four hillbillies who i guess had never been to a restaurant before. dressed in shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops, they proceeded to talk very loudly about other guests, complain their food wasn't there yet, and at one point, their two pre-teen boys were sword fighting with thesteakknives while mom and dad laughed. anyway, our waitress dropped off some raw vegetables that were fresh around two weeks ago, and a loaf of bread that was floating in a pool of olive oil and was smeared with some unidentifiable something on top of it. when our food arrived, my wife was given the wrong entrée; the waitress took it back and returned with exactly the same thing again. on the third attempt she was served what she ordered. the steaks were cooked correctly, and tasted fine; nothing spectacular though, especially for $50 each. both our baked potatoes were at room temperature. the waitress gave us a free dessert for the order mix up, so that was nice. she was polite, but seemed frustrated and a little overwhelmed, but that could have been because of the jackass family next to us.

now, getting to my real problem with this place, as we were leaving, we stopped to speak with the manager. we told him of our experience that evening and mentioned they should enforce their advertised dress code and maybe share with guests how to act appropriately in public. he told me in his best i-don't-give-a-crap attitude that in this economy they will say nothing to anyone about anything, and started acting as if we were wasting his time.

so, if want to get the same food and service you can get at applebee's but pay four times as much for it i guess you can try durant's. we will never return. a dazzle of wild zebras could not drag us back in there. for real fine dining, go to the capital grill in scottsdale.

disappointed. my wife and i ate here for the first time last night, after having heard about durant's for some time.

first, the good: the decor is as stated: old-school bordering on kitschy. entering the restaurant through the kitchen is certainly unique. the red velvet wallpaper, cramped bathrooms and telephone booth add to the experience, as do the plaques on the walls celebrating those who have ordered and finished their 48oz steak.

but unfortunately for me that all gets washed aside when it comes to the food. i ordered the prime rib with salad and rice pilaf. the salad was absolutely drowning in ranch dressing and the prime rib was merely good, not great. our waiter was also a bit brusque and spoke with what i perceived to be an eastern european accent that resulted in us asking him to repeat himself a few times. as well, when he was placing my wife's leftoversteakand potatoes in a take-home box at the table, he managed to accidentally fling a fork-full of potato on her while doing so. it was a bit of an eye-rolling experience all around.

in a nutshell, for the price you pay here the value is pretty lousy. i was hoping the quality of the food and service would be more than just adequate. instead it feels like they're charging you extra for the experience and history and hope you overlook that the food is middle-of-the-road.

edit: let me add, for posterity, cost since i brought up value. when we went (jul 10 2010), the 8 oz prime rib was $28 and my wife's ny stripsteakwas also $28. the average entree price was probably somewhere close to $40 - we cheaped out a bit. :-)

dedicated staff. i took my wife here last year for the first time, and she was so impressed with the whole dining experience. to start with a great gibson, and a scotch on the rocks, and went from there, steaks prepared exactly how we like them, along with sides, and wine that paired perfectly. it is the kind ofsteakhouse your father and father's father went too, and the staff being dedicated unlike other establishments, take very good care of you, as they did with us. there are plenty of high endsteakhouses, but if you really want a truly greatsteakserved by those that want you to come back, durant's is it.
