durant's is a classic. this is just one of those places you need to try if you're in phoenix. hanging out at the bar you run into some interesting people, and the food is consistently good. the dark wood, booths and decor reminds you of the old time steak and seafood places your parents took you to as a kid, but now you can appreciate the sophistication. and they weren't all nearly as good as durant's. the steaks are well above average, the vegetables and seafood are fresh and the atmosphere is cassic. recommended for a special date, business meeting or just a good evening on the town.

classic. i'm glad i went to this old classic spot...if only i had like it, though. the service was horrendous. the food was sub-par. the prices were astronomical. frankly, i don't know how they're still in business.

rude raceist employees. was in phoenix read about durant's there ad stated they had valet parking sounded like a classy place to eat.
when we got there the valet just sat there not offering service. when asked if he would park our car he told us to park it ourselves. we informed the management of this. after that the night just got worse. service was slow we had a rude waitress. the employeess at durant's were all raceist. unfortunately if your not white your not welcomed here and your made to feel that way. the food was really good pricey but good but that didn't make up for the raceist people employed there. it is so sad that in this day & age there are still ignorant people like at durants in this world.
durant"s at 2611 central ave. phoenix az (602 264-5967 is a raceist restaurnt

came on xmas eve. you need reservations. always wanted to try it here but never made it in. love the old school atmosphere , it reminded me of similar restaurants back in nyc. i highly recommend the oysters rockefeller. great for a group. filet mignon was cooked perfectly and the garlic mashed potatoes were on point! we tried the trio of creme brûlée and was not disappointed. our server was friendly and attentive. overall a great, nostalgic dining experience. will definitely bring out of town guests in.

good ambiance, service and one of best prime ribs.

they have a very tender and juicy prime ribs. i really enjoyed the ambiance. service was a little slow for the main course, but they were busy so it’s understandable. other than that it’s great experience.

my hubby & i raved about this restaurant to our friends. we went on my hubby's 70th birthday. what a total disaster. we were seated next to a large table of guys that was a bachelor party. they were so loud, we could not carry on any kind of conversation. people were coming in with shorts, flip-flops & raggedy tshirts. all our of meals came at room temperature. not even close to warm. just pitiful. and, we spent $$$$$$. i was so embarrassed that i had recommended the place to our friends. none of us will every go back. they obviously now cater to the drunk clubbing kiddies.

best burger i've had in a long time.
try the double and load it up with bacon.  the charbroiled taste is like right off the grill.  frys are seasoned and cooked perfect.   will be back for sure.

our visit was disheartening to say the least! noting their fabulous ratings on the likes of zagat, yelp and trip advisor, my wife and i were dismayed with our recent visit to this phoenix mainstay! durant’s does take you back in time. coming in through its front/back door, impresses you with the feel of walking into an old speakeasy! you actually meet the kitchen staff before anyone else – fun! the furnishings, booths, table and décor are a throwback to the 50’s and 60’ and you feel like the rat pack is about to walk past your table any moment – we loved the ambience! that being said, that’s where delight pretty much ended. we began our evening and though dinner with an excellent sonoma chardonnay. our appetizer of fried calamari left a lot to be desired of, where it appeared to be over cooked, chewy and its coating tasteless. we proceeded with our meal - my wife started with a chicken caesar salad and i had the regular caesar salad, both of which were adequate, but not worth writing home about. i was sincerely looking forward to a fine sautéed calf’s liver and onions, one of my favorite dishes i’d not had since moving to phoenix. i’m sorry to say it lacked tenderness, (maybe needing better preparation or product) taste with overwhelming caramelization of the sautéed onions, rendering them slimy! as a connoisseur of a well-prepared calf’s liver, i have discerned much better… of all the restaurants to have this dish across the country, old ebbitt grill in washington dc is a recipe durant’s should attempt to emulate, or come close to. i did quite enjoy the au gratin potatoes. and our dessert of durant’s cheesecake was satisfying and tasty. all things said, as a speakeasy/lounge it’ll make a great visit for martinis and chat. highly recommended for the business lunch set, but for formal or semi-formal dinner or romantic evening out, it left me pondering. it was unfortunate that my wife’s birthday dinner, ended up being a nonchalant and unmemorable meal. with the exception that my wife’s flowers delivered timely to the table – we rarely interacted with wait staff that just zipped by hurriedly doing their thing, at other tables. i plan on returning, but that may be a slow process. caveat emptor and bon appétit!

this was my first visit to durant's, the storied, central phoenix restaurant that provides diners with a snapshot of 1950s and 60s arizona power, politics and culture. our guide, a relatively recent transplant with close friends who are long-time residents with strong ties to phoenix, ushered us into the establishment through the kitchen. although durant's main entrance faces central avenue, the preferred entrance after nearly 67 years of operation remains in the back.

as we stepped out of the kitchen into the main dining room, it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to the mid-century steak house motif. red wall coverings, dark wood, high-backed leather booths and subdued lighting still reflect a time when the proprietor, local gambler, jack durant presided over the smoke-filled, backroom center of arizona legal, political and economic power.

it's impossible at this point to separate fact from fiction, but whether the restaurant's fabled mob connections are accurate or not, nobody disputes that durant's was a favorite watering-hole for the rich, famous, and politically powerful.

although durant died in 1987 and the locally celebrated film starring tom sizemore, "durant's never closes" chronicling his role in phoenix history is barely a footnote on imdb, jack durant and his restaurant still captures our imagination as we gluttonously ignore the advice of our cardiologist to become one with this bigger-than-life slice of phoenix history.

just off the plane and not yet hungry enough for a stroll through this carnivorous wonderland, the three of us opted to share a grilled shrimp & dungeness crab louie salad ($38.25). recognizing that our waiter was tied-up at another table where he was patiently guiding a mother/daughter team of tourists through the extensive luncheon menu, another member of the waitstaff took our beverage orders.

although smoke-free today, little else has changed since the surgeon general's early warnings eventually snuffed-out the last cigarette and expensive cigar at durant's and i was eager to try one of their classic martinis. the result was a perfectly chilled, ultra-dry, bombay sapphire martini ($14) served "a little dirty," in a classic martini glass with four blue cheese-filled olives on a small plate. my less adventurous companions ordered a wonderful glass of sauvignon blanc and iced tea, respectively, but unabashedly requested a sip of my martini.

when our waiter was able to break-free, he stopped by to reassure us and returned with our drinks and a wonderful, freshly-baked bread dish presented in a sea of melted butter, olive oil and herbs to complement our drinks.

although our server may have secretly viewed our decision to split an entree salad three-ways with disdain, he complied without the slightest hint of emotion. likewise, our request to substitute a continental dressing (roquefort or blue cheese layered over a vinaigrette with a hint of balsamic dressing) in lieu of the standard thousand island dressing usually associated with a "louis" was met professionally with exactly the right questions to assure no errors on the part of the kitchen. crisp, and perfectly chilled, our salad was topped with three large grilled shrimp and supplemented with generous servings of shrimp meat and dungeness crab. this was, hands-down, the best entree salad i have ever consumed.

we topped-off this perfect luncheon experience with a generous slice of new york style cheesecake ($10) and coffee. i'm a cheesecake snob, and while my view of a perfect cheesecake can only come from the kitchens of either carnegie's or katz deli in manhattan, i found the flavor, if not the texture of durant's version, spectacular.

leaving a well-earned 25 percent tip for our shared entree salad, modest bar bill and shared dessert tapped my wallet for a c-note, so there's no other way to say this: "durant's is expensive, but worth every penny."

while i may need to save my pennies, i'm already looking forward to dinner at this fantastic slice of phoenix living history.

think old time steakhouse, dark, deep reds, and white table clothes....then you have this place down. we had a party of 9 and service was really good. unfortunately, the food was just so-so. one steak was so tough, our guest sent it back and it was comped. the stone crab apps were tasteless. my honey glazed salmon was very good and i shared with some of the guest. it was a nice experience that i can say: been there, done that.

classic. i've been going to durant's for 10 years, my office is across the street. the food is excellent and the service is great. the bartenders are some of the best in the city and you always get an honest pour. durant's is a real institution.

it was ok! i guess if you want to eat a good steak just go to mastros, the prices are almost the same. the service was ok and food too. i wouldn't recommend this place. over rated and it seems like they need to use some of the money they make to make it look a little better

holy time machine back to a 50s supper club! this place is a trip, and the quality of the food is not compromised by the kitsch. don't miss out on the shrimp cocktail! service is attentive and skilled. super-busy and filled with a 'who's who' clientele.

wonderful service, good food & fun to see the good old boys!!. we were a small group of ladies who visited during restaurant week but it was a place that i have wanted to see for a long time for both historic and people watching reasons! wonderful ambiance and our server (chris) took time to explain the history. it was fun seeing the chaps sitting around the bar and in their booths with their 'nieces'!! the service (chris) was fantastic and the food and wine were good - especially the ginger salmon and choc dessert. not a place that i would go back to but if you are chap who likes the dark red leather and the company of other similar rotund mature men....enjoy!
