...... having heard stories of the ‘kitsch’ interior and nautical theme, the drunken admiral has never quite risen to the top of our ‘must visit’ list ofhobartrestaurants. it’s not that we haven’t wanted to go, it’s just that there’s always always been something better on offer. there comes a time though, when the stars align. when fate takes over and there’s a palpable cosmic convergence… that’s right folks, not only had we had run out of restaurants, but we also had an entertainment book voucher burning a hole in our pockets!! bring on the dancing fish and saucy wenches! or was it the other way around…? located on the wharf at historic sullivan’s cove,  the drunken admiral  is the old dame of hobart’s restaurant scene, cat

i so wish i did not just google and instead look at the reviews on zomato. a very interesting decor which i would describe as heavy and overbearing. it is this collection of stuff and has hard square tables and uncomfortable chairs. i get they are trying to make it feel like the inside of a ship but honestly. all of that wood paneling makes for a very loud environment and the place was not even full. the staff were nice but the whole process felt like it was rushed they wanted you seated, eating and then out. the chowder was the most uninspired chowder i have had inhobartand the fish and chips were like barnacle bills served on a plate. wine list was quiet good. definitely much better seafood restaurant alternatives available in beautiful hobart.

first time been tohobartand i heard this is one of the must try restaurant at water front. after visiting this restaurant we feel discriminated! the staff put us into a corner table which literally no one around us all because we are asian. the table was dark and i can't even see my food. they might think all asian are carrier and will bring them coronavirus...we would have given 5 stars if we did not receive this bad service. we will definately not recommended this restaurant to anyone especially to our asian friends. btw, we are from melbourne, not from oversea.

for many years i've seen but not eaten at the drunken admiral (for those that are unaware, one of the most famous photos ofhobartand its waterfront includes the da in its shot). so on my last trip tohobarti thought it about time to pay a visit.

the main standout when eating in this restaurant is the set up and the decor. some might think it tacky, but there are individual dining areas around the nooks and crannies you would expect to see on a ship. the place exudes hobart: you feel like you're in an old port and shipping town from the late 19th century.

the food itself, it must be said, is expensive. the service is adequate without really reflecting the price you pay (including for drinks), and it is easy to rack up a decent bill here.

that said the food is quite good. the seafood chowder was definitely one of the better that i've had - really creamy and hearty, and not stingy on the seafood. for main i had the yachtie's seafood grill: prawns, scallops and fish that come out sizzling in front of you. the flavours were quite good - but if i'm picky the seafood cooked at different rates, so i found some a little over and some a little under (my own fault i guess!), but the risk of this happening isn't helped by having such different fish on the plate.

my partner had old fashioned fish and chips. this was good, as you can't really go wrong with fish and chips (well actually you can, but that shouldn't happen in a quality specialty seafood restaurant).

there are plenty of good restaurants inhobartand this wouldn't be top of the list of you're here on a short stay. but, if you come tohobartsemi-regularly, then it is ahobartexperience worth doing. 3.5 stars on the old zomato scale.

we came tohobartand had in our minds that one night we would get a seafood platter for 2. after looking at reviews for all restaurants we decided to come here.
it is pretty big!! comes with a big selection of food hot and cold.
me and my boyfriend were pretty excited when it turned up. everything was lovely, i only have two minor things to say which is probably all down to preference - i believe you should never deep fry scallops and that the smoked salmon was a little on the dry side.
everything apart from that was excellent service was good and i loved the decor. when we left i could hardly move but my boyfriend said he wasn't full 😱 i think maybe he is a bottomless pit.

googled best places to eat inhobartand this place comes up. thought we will give it a try because peacock and jones (restaurant beside them) was closed. worse decision ever. the decor so cliche , not quirky. looks like one of those restaurants that you see in gordon ramsey's kitchen nightmare. the server was so rude, they gave us cold fries and undercooked rice. don't understand why people put good ratings here. the food is not great. but the seafood taste quite fresh

this place has so much hype aroundhobartso we thought we'd try it. a warning- don't be silly, book before going...it's always full.

the place has very quirky fishing and marine decor but is still cosy without being too crowded. it is rather noisy though and it should be noted that the tables and chairs are a little wobbly. the service was really good, the waiters had good knowledge of the menu and of what could work best for two diners.

as we knew its price tag was rather high, we decided to order two sharing style mains and a reasonably priced entree. we got the bread roll with the aioli for entree, priced around $7. it was well worth it, we got a whole roll and a good amount of sauce. tick. flavoursome, simple and not too filling. then our mains came (fisherman's selection and the yachtie's mixed grill) and they were of a good-not a crazy- size. the seafood was obviously very fresh and did not taste frozen at all. a great selection of battered and grilled tasmanian caught seafood. overall this was a great experience service and food wise and the place does deserve the rating it has acquired. however l, i think though the prices are still a little steep and they could've thrown in a few more bits of seafood especially in the fisherman's selection. also with the mixed grill you have to cook the seafood on the sizzling plate yourselves which was a bit new for me. we will try it again though!

last was here 17 year ago and have been referring our clients who visithobartthat eating here is a must. some time has gone by but the food does not disappoint. the chowder was as delicious as i remember and the rest of our meals were scrumptious - both hubby and daughter loved it - 100 out of 10 according to our 8 year old - who had her first scollops tonight and loved them. thanks guys for a quirky crazy environment to eat super delicious food. the mains were so good that i forgot to take a pic so you just get to see the empty plates - means you will have to come here for yourself.

if you visithobart(tasmania), you visit this restaurant for dinner. yes, i write it right, for dinner, because they open at 6 pm. to assure you'll get seated, please reserve a day before.

this is a seafood restaurant.as suggested by the brand, the look and feel is pirate ship. it is like dining in a ship's hold. having said that, let me "warn" you: this restaurant is for seafood lovers only. although they also serves some non-seafood main course, the seafood smell is very strong as we enter the restaurant.

we ordered 5 dishes and everything we're sayisfying to the highest level. two reasons for that. firstly is becausehobartis a city by a sea, therefore the seafood is very fresh. secondly is because they cook it so well....

i ordered a seafood platter. it is usually my trick if i visit a restaurant for the first time. we'll get everything on a plate. on this case, there were oyster, salmon, shrimp, octopus, squid, etc. some of them were servred raw, some were cooked. but everything were delicious. i finished them all to the last peace.

i was so enthusiastic eating and tasting the dishes and forgot to took some pictures ;)

had a wonderful dinner here when my partner came tohobartfor business. an amazing smell of grilled seafood is the first thing we noticed when opening the door to the restaurant. the decor of the restaurant is beautiful, feel like we dined in a ship. we ordered seafood chowder and original oysters as entree, and fish pot as main. this is by far the best chowder i've had! so fresh and rich! it's even better than the chowder i had in san francisco, boston, and seattle. it would be nice to have a piece of bread with it. unfortunately, they only sell a whole loaf of bread, which would be too much for two people. fresh oysters in tasmania is doubtlessly unbeatable. the fish pot really impressed me. they use red curry as stock, so the soup has a bit of kick, but not too much to get into the way of enjoying the delicious seafood. surprisingly, the fish pot contains quite a bit of fresh veggies as well as a wide range of seafood. healthy and yummy at the same time. we also really appreciate that that the staff didn't try to convince us to order too much, instead he suggest that we should share a fish pot as it's rather generous in size. we were way too full to have dessert in the end. definitely recommend seafood lovers to come for a hearty and delicious meal!!
