dined last minute with interstate colleagues , staff very accommodating in fitting us all in given we had booked for six and ten of us turned up ( well done staff )
now, as a local, the drunken admiral is not my first choice for dinner, but visitors love this place, the staff are enthusiastic and helpful and the ambiance lends its self to a fun experience
the menu covers most seafood tastes and is varied enough for most diners, in reality the fish and chip meals are average but the rest of the menu, on balance, is pretty good
the drunken admiral shines when catering for groups out for a fun evening
the beer and wine lists should keep most thirsty patrons happy

the seafood chowder is to die for! portions are huge and fish is always served fresh and tasty. don't let the decor fool you - it may look like a tgi fridays, but that's just the way they roll - the setting is fun and the atmosphere always suited to good times with friends in privately arranged tables. the quality of the food, however, is by far better than many fine dining seafood restaurants around.

don't dine here without trying the chowder. brimming with seafood and bursting with buttery flavours, it's well worth the $16 as an entree. the main menu is comprehensive, with options for traditional fish and chips plates, or asian inspired seafood curries, wok pots, and generous tasting platters galore. prices tend to be a few dollars more than at similarly themed restaurants, but a word of advice, if you're not overly famished get a selection of items to share between a group, because after an entree the main meals are sized generous enough that only the biggest appetites will get through them.

a hobart tradition worth the stop to taste tasmanian seafood, but book in advance as this is a popular place.

we aren't huge seafood fans but thought we give this ago and this place was amazing the staff were so lovely and cocktails to dye for. we had calamari to start and my partner said its the best he's ever had. for mains i had seafood skewers which came with 3 skewers on hot coals of scallops, prawns and fish with chips and salad the serving was huge, my partner had salmon in hot coal with rice and vegetables both meals were amazing defiantly recommended to anyone who wants good seafood, we seen people with the platter for 2 and it looks to die for.

the devil fired oysters were delicious! the japanese trawler prawns went well w the sticky ginger sauce. the tasmanian salmon steak was disappointing because the sauce was rather bland. good ambience and great for a date night!

having a dinner at cheesy-but-fun themed restaurant “the drunken north”. like most place in hobart, the seafood is generously portioned and extremely fresh. not ‘fine dining’ by any stretch of the imagination – but fun.

our visit to the drunken admiral was a last minute family dinner ...he atmosphere was great. i’ve been obsessed with mussels ...the drunken admiral’s steamed southern mussels are a generous portion size with a delicious broth of white wine, tomato, garlic and shallots. ...the best part of this dish was soaking up all that broth with that bread. the ocean trout salad was a hit with the parents. they loved the generous smoked trout that was mixed well throughout the rocket. the sea salt and pink peppercorn squid was a hit with myself and the better half

nice nautical themed pub, food was disappointing. nice nautical themed pub, reminded me of old seaside pubs in england. our waitress was ok, service was minimal, no niceties, however the food let the place down. we'd been recommended to try the seafood chowder here by someone who'd visited previously. disappointing, basically a roux thickened fish stock with a few tiny pieces of seafood, nothing like chowders we've had elsewhere, pretty disappointing. like others, had a partial recipe for the chowder with the dish, but this does not appear to be what we were served. also had salt and pepper squid, which was better, seemed fresh, not overcooked or rubbery, but tempura was soggy, better than the chowder but also disappointing. overpriced for the quality of the food, but it's in a touristy spot. don't know if it's changed hands since the visit of the person that recommended it, or whether they've cut costs, or just food quality is inconsistent. disappointing after the recommendation, won't be going back.

great deco, made us feel like we had gone back in time to a cramped pirate ship. service was quick and friendly, food was good and portions were not small. great evening and will visit again when back in hobart.

excellent seafood in a fun setting. think of a campy underwater/pirate motif and you’ve got this place! lots of interesting old things around. most importantly though, the food was great! yes it’s not cheap but nothing around this touristy part of hobart is - might as well pay for food you know is decent and enjoy the surrounds! service was also good - friendly and quick but not overbearing. if you’re in hobart make sure you go!

bones in fish fillet. very disappointing.
my husbands selected the chowder which was ok. i was shocked when l discovered bones (yes, plural) in my fish fillet. very unpleasant as l was quite looking forward to my meal. i couldn't eat it and when the waiter returned to collect the plates, l showed him the bones. he returned and offered not to charge me for my drink as an apology.

when the bill came along, it totalled $77. me husband did not add any tips and presented his credit card for payment. when they returned the card slip for signing, my husband found the total of $77 had become $120. when my husband questioned this, they waiter said they had added over $40 gratuity.... (i guess that was to compensate for my free glass of wine). obviously we were shocked and asked that it be removed.

not happy and will not be returning.
