we had actually gone to this place to try out the masala dosa but unfortunately they had dosa available but the stuffing (baji) was empty so it was a huge disappointment.
so we finally ordered their pav baji which was more than what i expected to taste for, it had super soft pav and creamy side dish.
and we also tried their famous cutlets and gudbud ice cream which tasted just like the olddianaplace would serve so a big 👍🏻.

hotel diana, is an iconic restaurant in the temple town of udupi. serving pure vegetarian food, this is everyone's go-to restaurant when in udupi.

the now famous gadbad ice cream is believed to have born in the kitchens of this very hotel. the owner, mr. mohandas pai mixed 3 kinds of ice cream with jelly, fruits and dry fruit for a group of tourists when there wasn't enough ice cream left. needless to say, this was a hit!

it was named gadbad like the kannada word gadibidi, which means 'in a hurry'.

here's what we had here:
🍽️ veg cutlet - another bestseller that you'll find on every table. beetroot cutlets served with chutney and sauce. yum!

🍽️ bombay cutlet - improvised cutlet with a indianized salad & bread. good.

🍽️ channa batura - huge baturas with some really tasty channa gravy.

🍽️ masala dosa - crispy dosa with some tasty potato filling accompanied with some amazing chutney & sambar. brilliance!

🍽️ chai - i like my tea strong. very few restaurants down south make great tea. this one was one of them.

🍽️ gadbad (of course) - missing this would be a crime!

the service is good, the decor here is basic, like every other udupi restaurant, emphasizing more on the quality of food instead. be prepared to wait during peak hours.

i miss the olddianahotel with it's spiral staircase across the well in the middle though. i've been going there since i was a kid, it had a different charm.

if you're traveling to udupi, be sure to visit this place without fail!

an iconic institution whose legacy is synonymous with the creation of the 'gadbad', the newly locateddianaleaves patrons with mixed feelings when it comes to their ambience, food and service. having expanded their menu a wee bit we ordered the chana bataru, sheera, puri bhaji, puri kurma, paneer butter masala, veg bonda and finished off with the 'gadbad' and the kashi halwa for desserts. although we found most of the items satisfactory with particular praise for the kashi halwa however the 'gadbad' and the chana batura was way below par which makes the argument more conclusive that just because you invented something doesn't mean you'd remain a master of it for long unless you evolve with the times. the service is slow and the waiters unfriendly while the ambience albeit quite large had gaping sections unavailable which were being used as store rooms which would shock any visitor...

masala dosa was pretty ordinary.

tea had a different flavour.

overall decent ambiance and pretty good food.

very nice place with family and friends.. must go , pocket friendly..(poori kurma , cutlet and gudbud ) do not return without having them.

the best part is they don't add soda so your stomach also will be safe.

the very speciality of this restaurant are their age old staff (i mean those staff ofdianawho are working for atleast 20yrs or so wer my mom used to go since her childhood)who welcome you with their bright and tide uniforms.

diana and udupi are synonyms. remember going to this place (the old one) every now and then in my childhood. we were frequent visitors until they moved to a new place. i don't know what has happened these days, the quality has deteriorated and the prices have gone up which do not give justice to the food served. nevertheless, dianaremains an icon and has a special place in my heart. the items i love here would be masala dosa (really crispy), masala puri (it's a bit different here, but tastes great), cutlet, chana batura, puri dingri masala, shavige pulav.
