i was a frequent customer during my schooling years in udupi and loved the food there. for the last decade i made sure that i visit this place whenever i am in my hometown.
i visited this place recently in march after a gap of 2 years with a very high expectation but every thing from entry to the exit was disappointing.

menu was limited . staff were grumpy . cutlery were old and chipped .
we had ordered for puri korma , channa bhatura , cutlet and gudbud. all were average in-terms of taste . drastic reduction in portion size as well.
the most disappointing was the gudbud. i distinctly remember it used to have some jelly and it was missing this time.
overall this place has lost its charm and it’s not the place i would look forward to visit during my next trip to udupi.

we have heard good things about diana. but what a disappointment it was. we ordered two portions of cutlet and two gudbud along with puri and kurma. it was below mediocre. kurma(stew) was too damn sweet. gudbud was a huge disappointment and cutlet was crispy on the outside while bland on the inside.

visited diana after a really long time and ordered the usual favourite cutlet, plain dosa, coffee and gudbud. loved the cutlet, coffee and the gudbud. dosa was a little soggy. overall the food was good and we enjoyed it.

after watching an episode of food lovers tv i came here to try to gadbad with greater hopes. it turns out that they served horlicks cake as one layer in the gadbad in the episode but normally serves pistachio instead of the horlicks cake. very disappointed with that.

we went there after food lovers tv's episode on this restaurant.
the place is well lit, it's in the middle of the city...
you have to wait for 30mins in that small 10*10 place, where social distancing is top notch, people don't care about masks or sanitizer! covid is long gone!!!
service is so good! you have to literally wait for 40 mins for channa batura and all you get in channa in a creamy white sauce!! wow such an amazing innovation!!! white sauce channa!!😂
ask for a glass of water, they make us wait for 20mins loose your patience ask them again even they will loose their patience and shout at us and make us wait for another 20mins!!! such a warm service!!!
they don't care about burnt mustard seeds, they use the same burnt stuff and prepare cutlets!!!
food lovers tv, we were really disappointed!!!

we had actually gone to this place to try out the masala dosa but unfortunately they had dosa available but the stuffing (baji) was empty so it was a huge disappointment.
so we finally ordered their pav baji which was more than what i expected to taste for, it had super soft pav and creamy side dish.
and we also tried their famous cutlets and gudbud ice cream which tasted just like the old diana place would serve so a big 👍🏻.

one of the oldest hotels of udupi. you can call it an institution of quality. over 6 decades old. the owners see to it by visiting kitchen regularly so as to maintain the quality of food served. the waiters here many of them are with the hotel for over 2 decades. the owners & the waiters are very cordial & customer friendly. some of the best served here are gadbad ice-cream, puri kurma, masala dosa, cutlet.

hotel diana, is an iconic restaurant in the temple town of udupi. serving pure vegetarian food, this is everyone's go-to restaurant when in udupi.

the now famous gadbad ice cream is believed to have born in the kitchens of this very hotel. the owner, mr. mohandas pai mixed 3 kinds of ice cream with jelly, fruits and dry fruit for a group of tourists when there wasn't enough ice cream left. needless to say, this was a hit!

it was named gadbad like the kannada word gadibidi, which means 'in a hurry'.

here's what we had here:
🍽️ veg cutlet - another bestseller that you'll find on every table. beetroot cutlets served with chutney and sauce. yum!

🍽️ bombay cutlet - improvised cutlet with a indianized salad & bread. good.

🍽️ channa batura - huge baturas with some really tasty channa gravy.

🍽️ masala dosa - crispy dosa with some tasty potato filling accompanied with some amazing chutney & sambar. brilliance!

🍽️ chai - i like my tea strong. very few restaurants down south make great tea. this one was one of them.

🍽️ gadbad (of course) - missing this would be a crime!

the service is good, the decor here is basic, like every other udupi restaurant, emphasizing more on the quality of food instead. be prepared to wait during peak hours.

i miss the old diana hotel with it's spiral staircase across the well in the middle though. i've been going there since i was a kid, it had a different charm.

if you're traveling to udupi, be sure to visit this place without fail!

an iconic institution whose legacy is synonymous with the creation of the 'gadbad', the newly located diana leaves patrons with mixed feelings when it comes to their ambience, food and service. having expanded their menu a wee bit we ordered the chana bataru, sheera, puri bhaji, puri kurma, paneer butter masala, veg bonda and finished off with the 'gadbad' and the kashi halwa for desserts. although we found most of the items satisfactory with particular praise for the kashi halwa however the 'gadbad' and the chana batura was way below par which makes the argument more conclusive that just because you invented something doesn't mean you'd remain a master of it for long unless you evolve with the times. the service is slow and the waiters unfriendly while the ambience albeit quite large had gaping sections unavailable which were being used as store rooms which would shock any visitor...
