deacon's corner is in that gastown-east sort-of-quiet neighbourhood where ten years ago you might have seen more disreputable types and heard stories about being mugged in broad daylight. in fact, one of my friends did get mugged. nowadays, with some nicer establishments popping up in and around it (like the alibi room just across the street), you can probably feel safe enough walking to it for brunch. on the saturday morning, two police cruisers were parked outside and there were three officers in it. and shortly after 10am, there was a lineup at the door, so you can at least feel the safety in numbers if the neighbourhood still has a bad rap with you. the restaurant is mostly a lunch/brunch place. according to our friendly server, on weekdays they mostly get the lunch crowd from the courthouse. on weekends, its busy for brunch. presumably things quiet down a lot after that. i had my eye on the "classic southern beer meatloaf", but though it is still on the online pdf menu (as of the

worth it. everytime i am at deacons i can hear my soul screaming ..thank you . it is amazing to see how tirelessly their chefs in the kitchen cope with the onslaught of hungry diners who except nothing less than an great meal true to their reputation of being one of the great greasy spoon in vancouver. line ups seem to be a regular thing here and why would anyone mind if got even more famished staring at others eating their heart out.

today we ordered southern chicken with fries and our regular order of pulled pork with pancakes. again i don't know how they do it but hey! deacons another perfect landing. least we forget the server jade .. you are awesome. great service !!

deacon's corner, a new old school diner, is aiming to bring a little bit of personality to the far edges of gastown. they serve classic diner style breakfasts at reasonable prices to an up and coming, but still sketchy part of

this is a casual diner specializing in american comfort food. they have two locations, one in kits and one in gastown. i've visited their kits location several months ago and decided to check out their gastown location. during the latter visit, i had their big mountie and southern belly biscuit. while neither dish was perfect, i quite enjoyed both, in particular their french toast and pulled pork. the food was very hearty and filling, and the prices are quite reasonable. service-wise, the staff weren't the most attentive, but they are quite cheerful and friendly. all in all, this is a place that i'd recommend checking out for some tasty, hearty american comfort food.

big mounties ($15.50):
4/5
this consisted of three slices of french toast sandwiching a layer of pulled pork and a piece of fried chicken, and was topped with two eggs. i loved the french toast: they were soft and fluffy with a wonderful sweet fragrance of cinnamon. the fried chicken was not the greatest: even though it was reasonably juicy for white meat and well-seasoned, the breading was quite soggy. i did really enjoy their pulled pork however, which was very tender and juicy, and d a nice sweetness, which i like in my pulled pork. personally, i'd go with their pulled pork monte cristo, which is a similar dish but missing the top layer of fried chicken.

southern belly biscuit ($13.50):
3.5/5
this consisted of bacon, an egg, cheddar cheese, biscuits, and two sausage patties, all topped with gravy and slices of jalapeno peppers, and came with a side of hashbrowns. i found the biscuits themselves to be a bit too soft and soggy, without any discernable flavour; i actually preferred the ones from jethros a bit more. the gravy was not overly thick/gummy, but was also a bit bland for my taste. the meat was tasty however: the bacon was quite crispy and the sausage patties were tender, juicy, and had a nice spicy flavour. the jalapenos also helped lend more flavour to the dish. i also really enjoyed their hashbrowns, which were shredded and very crispy on the outside and was also quite well-seasoned.

summary:
food: 4/5
price: 4/5
service: 3.5/5
overall: 4/5
recommendations: pulled pork monte cristo, french toast

used to be very good but today was not. the veggie omelette was more like an overcooked scramble with a not pleasant cheese(a surprise). hashbrowns were soggy and disgusting. toast was fine.

deacon's corner has the perfect balance of old school diner meets contemporary cool foodie hangout. do not let my photographs fool you. there were always people coming in and out of deacon’s corner with smiles on their faces and a nice thing to say. (i just like to try and respect people’s privacy when i can.) in fact the serving staff were so super friendly and cheerful, you can not help but be in a good mood when you visit.

one of the guests told us that before their recent renovations the place truly looked like it had been plucked out of the 60s, but with all the wear and tear, so the changes were great improvements. i loved it. a perfect blend of retro and modern.

we both ordered the carolina pulled pork and pancakes but got the mini (yes, that is the small portion) which chef j. c. (juan carlo) used his creative and artistic foodie talents to make extra special for us! oh my goodness i could not stop laughing when this adorable plate came to our table!

and wow, wow, it was so good! the eggs were butter-basted, the pulled pork sweet but not too sweet, absolutely delicious, and i think those were the fluffiest pancakes i have ever had. i have not stopped thinking about this delicious brunch since i indulged…

deacon’s corner may not have been around since the 50s (they opened in 2009) but it has to be one of the coolest diners i have ever visited. its location bridges east van and gastown so its setting is a little rough around the edges but the customers and staff make it feel like home.

it was the perfect brunch. everything was charming and the food? omg, the food was so delicious. i must go back!

solid greasy spoon with a focus on southern favourites. think biscuits & gravy, grits, fried chicken but they also offer classics like bennies and scrambles. hashbrowns are rösti-style (shredded) - my favourite. good value (huge portions), fast service. very heavy food but sometimes that's just what you need!

drive by this place everyday and i've had it recommended by multiple people. i finally tried it yesterday and had the chicken and biscuits with gravy, it came with a decent size piece of fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, country gravy, 2 eggs and hashbrowns. it all tasted great and would definitely order it again. the chicken was cooked well, not dry and had a good crunch and flavour. the biscuits were a tad dry but the taste and gravy made up for it, the hashbrowns were you're standard diner hashbrowns and eggs were cooked perfectly. service was quick and friendly, i got there just before the lunch rush and it seemed to fill up quick. i will definitely be returning.

they have a breakfast sandwich called the b.e.l.t.c.h, which as you can imagine, is pronounced "belch." i'm loathe to order it, but it's fantastic hangover food. when i'm craving carbs in the morning (read: always) then this is a solid choice for me.

for me, this is one of the original diners that started re-vamping the neighborhood. i started eating here before social media comments came to be. i'm glad it has sustained and kept up its east side ambience. the food is still good, especially the breakfast.
