deacon's corner

after being declined breakfast 10 minutes to the 2pm cutoff at the “urban fare”, we were searching for an all day breakfast joint downtown. i recalled a previous trip here and now suggested this all day breakfast diner to meet my our needs now. the entrance was a set of heavy double doors, made of wood and accented in cast iron. past them was a warm diner with hardwood floors and faux leather booths. although the sign instructed you to find a clean seat and help yourself, one of the staff is sure to greet you upon entry and repeat the same message.

i love benny's and this was a decent attempt, but definitely not a favourite.  the eggs were nicely poached, but the hollandaise and the hashbrowns were disappointing.  it is a cute diner atmosphere, but we waited a long time for service and even the coffee was disappointing.

good food but bad menu. i went to deacon's corner a couple of time and every time the food quality is getting better , but one thing that bothers me every single time is how unappealing and outdated their menu is. i understand the diner concept but the menu is not profesionally designed , full of mistakes and just give me headache !!! i like this little joint but a redesign of the menu needs to be done !

pretending to be more then it is.... i got the social shopper coupon with 2 can dine with 2 reg burgers and fries. up graded one fries to chili fries and upgraded one burger to grilled chicken burger. starting with the reg ham burger. its not seasoned paddy with lots of cooked blood all over the paddy (i question the quality) very thick bun to meat ratio. so thick i can't finish the bun. the chili fries ($3 extra) comes with cold cheese on top that doesn't melt. the chili taste exactly like wendy's chili. the chicken burger come with so little chicken that only every other bite you would have any chicken. its a small piece of chicken cut into strips to spread over the bun. my basic meal without the upgrade suppose to be worth $16. with this low quality i find the trouble even justifying the $9 i paid with coupon plus $$$ on upgrades. this is more like the cheap burger you expect when your cheap relative invites you over for a bbq. i hope everyone avoids.....thumbs down... way down...

"sorry for the wait" you will hear this at every table. the food is good when it finally arrives, but don't come here on your lunch break. you will need an hour plus from the time you walk in, to when u get the cheque. 30 min wait to get your food from when you order is normal here. you are better of to go up to the counter and get yourself a refill of coffee or water than wait for the staff to do it. one of the servers here will stand at the front counter and talk about her weekend than check on your table, and will give you attitude about asking for a second cup of coffee. no complaints about the food, just the way it's run.

dishwasher to cook. seriously, as we learned after the 30 minute wait for the food (the place was empty), the dishwasher was promoted to cook w/in the last few days. and the burgers tasted like wet dishtowels. cold ones at that. all the empty tables should've been a sign, but have you seen the gushing reviews on urbanspoon? such a shame w/ so many good burger joints (back to romers for us) and gd places in gastown otherwise. the waiter did try to make up for the mess, but there is no saving this place. please die, deacons and quickly so as to save others from the same fate as us.

a solid breakfast place!. a nice diner feel joint with a good menu selection. the staff are friendly and the food is tasty. my wife ordered the "little carolina pulled pork & pancake" and i got the "farmers scramble". the service is quick and served nice and hot. it's very laid back inside and not super squished and stuffy like some other breakfast places. overall, it was enjoyable.

by far one of the worst breakfasts i have had in vancouver ever. had the gastown breakfast..eggs weren't done the way i requested, i got chilli when i didn't ask for it, the worst hash browns i have ever had, and the sausage patty was disgusting!

love this place so much! i'm telling you, you have to try the fried chicken and the mac and cheese! so good i can't get enough of it! deacons i love u

great diner. as with all my reviews, i simply boil it down to whether i would come back or not.

in the case of deacon's corner? i would most definitely come back!

great room, on point with the best diner offerings and good value.

terrible service.. the service here is so terrible. we had one bad experience after another but let me give you the highlights:

- the server propped the main door open. all the people sitting in my area immediately became cold (it was only 8 degrees out there after all). i asked if the door could be closed and she replied that the kitchen had no ventilation and the kitchen staff were hot. now i'm sympathetic to the kitchen staff in this scenario - but maybe they should get some kind of ventilation system in the kitchen?! anyway, she said she would leave it for a few minutes and then close it again. as she walked away the guy at the table next to us asked if the door could be closed (he must not have heard us talking about it). she said to him 'you're cold as well. f***, fine', then proceeded to roll her eyes as she closed the door. so incredibly rude.

- we had a groupon to pay the bill. we were told that we couldn't use the groupon as groupon had made a mistake on the terms and conditions and it was meant to say it was only valid after 4pm. we showed her the groupon, and how it did not say that, and we were entitled to redeem it now. she went on to give us this big long story about how she'll get into trouble with her boss if she puts it through before 4pm, etc etc. frankly i don't care about any of that, the terms say i can use it whenever i want and i wanted to use it then. they should take the issue up with groupon, not with the customer. she finally put it through with the groupon, however not after telling me many times about how she was going to get into trouble with the boss. ordinarily, if i liked the place and the servers were personable, i would have been more than happy to pay the full price and come back another time with the groupon. absolutely no way in this case - i am never going back there again.

in conclusion: service - so so bad. food - pretty good, especially the fried chicken. however is it worth suffering through the terrible service for the good fried chicken? no.

great lunch fun diner!!. i tried deacon's corner today for the first time and was very pleased with the friendly, prompt service, food choices and prices. the food arrived very quickly, and the place was full! and the food was yummy!
great energy in this attractive diner. loved the decor and old pictures of vancouver. a bit out of the way, but well worth the effort. i'll be back!

since its become the 'new' deacon it's gone downhill. the half carolina used to be loaded and a hefty meal. now it's a pancake, 2 eggs and pulled pork. tasted ok but the plate needed more. and the server complained when we switched to more comfortable seats.

worst service ever. some waitress just walking around, they just do not pay attention to their customer. just do not come here when u hungry
