deacon'scorneris in that gastown-east sort-of-quiet neighbourhood where ten years ago you might have seen more disreputable types and heard stories about being mugged in broad daylight. in fact, one of my friends did get mugged. nowadays, with some nicer establishments popping up in and around it (like the alibi room just across the street), you can probably feel safe enough walking to it for brunch. on the saturday morning, two police cruisers were parked outside and there were three officers in it. and shortly after 10am, there was a lineup at the door, so you can at least feel the safety in numbers if the neighbourhood still has a bad rap with you. the restaurant is mostly a lunch/brunch place. according to our friendly server, on weekdays they mostly get the lunch crowd from the courthouse. on weekends, its busy for brunch. presumably things quiet down a lot after that. i had my eye on the "classic southern beer meatloaf", but though it is still on the online pdf menu (as of the

deacon'scornerhas the perfect balance of old school diner meets contemporary cool foodie hangout. do not let my photographs fool you. there were always people coming in and out of deacon’scornerwith smiles on their faces and a nice thing to say. (i just like to try and respect people’s privacy when i can.) in fact the serving staff were so super friendly and cheerful, you can not help but be in a good mood when you visit.

one of the guests told us that before their recent renovations the place truly looked like it had been plucked out of the 60s, but with all the wear and tear, so the changes were great improvements. i loved it. a perfect blend of retro and modern.

we both ordered the carolina pulled pork and pancakes but got the mini (yes, that is the small portion) which chef j. c. (juan carlo) used his creative and artistic foodie talents to make extra special for us! oh my goodness i could not stop laughing when this adorable plate came to our table!

and wow, wow, it was so good! the eggs were butter-basted, the pulled pork sweet but not too sweet, absolutely delicious, and i think those were the fluffiest pancakes i have ever had. i have not stopped thinking about this delicious brunch since i indulged…

deacon’scornermay not have been around since the 50s (they opened in 2009) but it has to be one of the coolest diners i have ever visited. its location bridges east van and gastown so its setting is a little rough around the edges but the customers and staff make it feel like home.

it was the perfect brunch. everything was charming and the food? omg, the food was so delicious. i must go back!

good food but bad menu. i went to deacon'scornera couple of time and every time the food quality is getting better , but one thing that bothers me every single time is how unappealing and outdated their menu is. i understand the diner concept but the menu is not profesionally designed , full of mistakes and just give me headache !!! i like this little joint but a redesign of the menu needs to be done !

this one was at deacon'scorner. this is a real diner with the chairs, decor and music. if you have not heard of it nor tried it, it is worth the trip the menu is larger than typical diners' menu with an all-day breakfast items; but alas, no milkshake. given my first breakfast was so light, i thought i better have a real breakfast now. healthy business breakfast part 2 - good old southern boy; eggs with house made chili and cheddar cheese, corn grits, bacon, hash brown and healthy whole wheat toast deacon'scorner101 main street vancouver, bc www.deaconscorner.ca

going downhill.... i've been deacon'scornera number of times now, but my last visit was just horrible. we showed up at the end of the lunch rush, so there were plenty of spots available, but we weren't seated for 5-10 minutes. in fact only half the restaurant was full. no tables were cleaned up so we couldn't even seat ourselves. perhaps it was attributed to being understaffed, so i gave them the benefit of the doubt for that. but i didn't appreciate that we were left standing there for as long as we were.

unfortunately, the service didn't get much better after that. the server came by once to take our order, then once to collect our plates. we told him the type of eggs he wanted, but he said our order didn't come with eggs. 15 minutes later, he came back and said that our order did come with eggs. another 15 minutes later, he brought us order, and switched the egg orders around. the hashbrowns tasted "off", like it was heated up frozen shredded potatoes - gone stale. also the coffee is just plain awful, even for a diner.

maybe it was just a one off day. but in hind sight, i probably shouldn't have even left a tip, but i was in a hurry and didn't feel like explaining myself.

hit & miss. i love finding a super little place to tell people about so when i tried deaon'scorneri thought it was like my brother used to say: " the service may be bad but the food... is terrible!" in essence deacon'scornertries so hard and has every chance of being a well-run, happening place but it just doesn't quite make the grade. the atmosphere has yet to be fully realized, it needs a focus. desperate for that downhome diner feel it lacks the warmth and welcoming atmoshere. the staff seems very anxious and ill at ease. they sell t-shirts and muffins side by side on there display behind the cash so it is just plain weird. and the food is just so so. save your money and go to subway. i give it a d+
