today was such a beautiful fall saturday. jenn spent the day baking some cakes and i spent the day cleaning out the garage. neither of us had much of a lunch and so we headed to greensboro to a restaurant that both of us had been to in our childhood, “darryl’s wood fired grill”. going off of memory, i had some expectations of what the food and atmosphere would be like. we arrived around 4pm to find the restaurant already had a small crowd going. the exterior of the restaurant has an outside bar area with two fire pit seating area’s, which looks like a fun place to wait for a table on a busy night. the interior immediately broughtbackmemories when we walked through the door toward the hostess stand. the floor being checker board small tile designs with lots of wood and pale bricks throughout the three story maze of a building. we were seated at a nice booth on the third floor overlooking the restaurant. in talking to the manager, we found out that darryl’s is not a chain restaurant anymore and is actually the last standing location which is now locally owned and operated. the menu at darryl’s is diverse and there is a little of something for everyone. what i remembered about darryl’s from childhood was that the ribs were delicious. we started off our meal with “darryl’s homemade crackers”. it was the first of our dishes that appeared definitely fresh and homemade, which delightfully would be a theme throughout the rest of the meal. something as simple as crackers and ranch would seem boring, but they were delicious. the other appetizer that we attempted to eat was the “build your own snack attack”. we had ours with “darryl’s buffalo wings”, “ginormous chicken tenders”, “provolone wedges”, “stuffed mushrooms”, “bacon and cheese tater skins” and “darryl’s smoked wings”. while you can get most of these things at any bar and grill type restaurant,  darryl’s version seem to be a notch above the rest, elevated by home made, fresh & quality ingredients. we pretty much ann

the old is new again. his is another old favorite we'd ignored for much too long. this lone survivor of a once proud north carolina chain remains a carnivore's delight - ribs, steaks, prime rib, pulled pork, chicken, more ribs, burgers, and some seafood as well.

we quickly discarded any thought of an appetizer, and went straight for 2 combos loaded with meat choices, and enough side items to make it interesting. the bbq 3 ways ($17.99) includes pulled pork, st louis style ribs, and smoked chicken wings. we added hot chips and slaw as sides.

the pulled pork, while not really traditional nc style pork, it is quite good in its own right, and is sauced with the spicy, tomato-based sauce made in house. the st louis ribs were good, though true to the nature of this cut of ribs, they are rather chewy. the chicken wings are not a style we care for - combination of the smoked flavor and being over-sauced. the thin hot chips were outstanding, and the slaw was solid, went well with the pulled pork.

the 3 way sampler ($16.99) was composed of babybackribs, chicken tenders, and fried shrimp, to which was added ffs and baked beans. ribs were excellent, falling off the bone tender, sauced just right. the chicken tenders were also very, very good, and a very nice serving. the fried shrimp were simply ok. the ffs were outstanding, especially dunked in the house bbq sauce - the beans were nice, as well.

their house bbq rib sauce ($3.95) is excellent, and after this visit i was reminded how much i like this sauce. of course, we brought a bottle home with us.

the service here remains quite good - friendly and efficient - and the time out of the kitchen is very reasonable. there are a couple of things about this restaurant that do irritate - the music is constant and loud (background music should be background music), and a soft drink costs $2.39.

still, all in all, very much enjoyed our return here. we'll be back, and soon.

some of the worst service in a long time. to start we had made reservations a week in advance, we get there and are informed they don't have any but after looking they realize they do so we end up out on the porch area. it was fine but the heater was right above us and it was hot, had to literally get up and go find someone to turn it off after our waitress obviously forgot. then the appetizer dishes never got cleared had to do that myself , food took forever to get there and no one had yet even received their salads or soup it all came at the same time!!! food was good, service left a lot to be desired. we had brought our own cake as it was a birthday party. i asked for plates, a knife and forks. got the plates, they were still wet from being washed, fortunately i brought a spatula and plastic forks from home as the knife and forks never got to the table. some of us asked for coffee and were told they couldn't make it as they were out of filters!!!
we arrived at 6:30 and it was almost 9:30 before we finally finished mostly due to having to wait for everything. we even had a hard time getting a refill for water or drinks. the fastest thing all night was our checks getting picked up and returned to us. sorry but i am afraid i won't beback.

back again!. we annualy make a trip down to martinsville for the october race and we stay at one of the hotels right behind darryl's. for the last two years we have made darryl's our "headquarter" bar and restaurant and we have never been dissappointed with our food, our service or our dining experience.
i am absolutely in love with the beef ribs, they just rock!
we love the beer list, featuring north carolina beers, and the wine list is superb.
looking forward to our tripbacknext year!

darryl's version 2.0. so i finally got around to trying the newly re-opened darryl's restaurant. if you're like me, you have fond memories of darryl's from the 1980s and 90s. during that time period, they were all over the place and i had positive experiences at several different locations. over time, they faded away until there was only one location left, in greensboro. this greensboro location has been revamped and revitalized and is better than ever. i love the outdoor firepits and lounge areas. the interior design is lots of fun, with all the great features you remember. the food was excellent, with a wide variety of different items. however, the real treat is the bar menu. the beer selection is truly heroic, unparalleled in the triad as far as i'm concerned. they have varied selection of beer, many of which i have never even heard of before and i consider myself somewhat of a beer snob. the prices are surprisingly fair as well. i especially liked the beer flight concept, which i had seen at bars before but never at a restaurant. overall, darryl's is that rare restaurant that lives up to its past while still moving forward. i'm looking forward to goingbackagain.

not accommodating. my family of four tried to eat there one afternoon only to discover that there were absolutely no vegetarian options. we're certainly familiar with this sort of franchise that typically has only one or two things we can eat, but there was nothing on the menu and the wait staff was not even remotely helpful. most places will offer to alter a dish to make it acceptable for vegetarians, but we did not encounter that level of professionalism at darryl's. we won't goback-- what would be the point?

darryl's wood fired grill: what's old is new again…only bigger and much better!. darryl's wood fired grill
3300 high point road
greensboro, nc 27407

years ago the high point road area of greensboro was thriving. restaurants were abundant, the mall was a shopper's dream, and retail stores peppered the corridor. times have changed. high point road is no longer to go to spot for retail and restaurant space. the same stretch of road now has numerous vacant stores and restaurants. just when the locals had written the area off, a change was on the horizon…a big change. thanks to kotis properties, the landmark darryl's restaurant has a fresh new exterior, revamped menu, and food to make your mouth water.

the renovations completely changed the outside facade of darryl's. they added a fabulous outdoor dining and bar section complete with granite topped bars and creative fire pits that flank the entrance. for the winter months there are heaters and seasonal door panels to keep diners nice and toasty. the patio is by far the biggest and best outside dining offered in the triad. inside darryl's, the renovations are blended seamlessly with the traditional darryl's we all remember. sorry 80's babies, the double decker bus has moved on. the jail cells, ferris wheel seat, and brick walls will bringbackthose cherished memories of your childhood. new features include a business area near the bar with pop up electrical outlets, free wi-fi, and meeting space complete with audio visual equipment. surrounding the bar there are multiple flat screen televisions tuned into sporting and news events.

the menu has a wide ranging assortment of beef, chicken and fish all of most of which are grilled on darryl's infamous wood fired grill. burgers, sandwiches and salads are also listed on the menu. some interesting local favorites like shrimp and grits are combined with old favorites like darryl's infamous lasagna. there are 24 beers on tap and both beer and wine flights are available. local beers from mother earth, foothills and red oak brewery are on tap.

for an appetizer, we chose the original homemade crackers. these monster sized, free form crackers are served with ranch dressing for dipping. they are lightly sprinkled with coarse sea salt and their crunchiness is irresistible. the creaminess of the ranch is a nice contrast to the saltiness of the cracker.

i chose the tennessee black jack chicken with seasonal steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. the entrée arrived with two perfectly cooked, lightly glazed chicken breasts. the sauce listed as a tangy jack daniels bourbon honey mustard sauce was not like any other honey mustard i've tasted. it had a nice balance of sweet and tangy which was offset by the oaky undertones of the bourbon. the additional sauce that arrived with the plate was much appreciated. the red skinned potatoes were mashed to a nice consistency and were well seasoned. the steamed vegetables included yellow squash, zucchini, red bell peppers and onions. i was delighted to find they were still crunchy and tasted freshly picked.

my partner chose the adam's bbq beef ribs with a loaded baked potato and baked beans. i do not care for ribs, but the beef ribs at darryl's have converted me to a rib lover! they arrive pre-cut and the meat is so tender that it falls off the bone with a prick of the fork. the ribs are served on a large plate so there is plenty of room to move bones around as you eat. they are covered in a sauce that is smoky and sweet with just the right amount ofbackheat. the sauce gives new meaning to the words "finger licking good". the sauce is currently bottled and sold exclusively in the restaurant. my partner was quite pleased with the attention the kitchen staff paid to his potato. it was cut in a zigzag pattern and stuffed with cheese, butter, scallions and sour cream. the baked beans arrived in a small augratin. their smokiness and creaminess was the perfect offset to the starchy potato.

we were told to save room for dessert but the food was simply too good to resist. never ones to turn down something sweet, we continued on with our gastronomical journey. i chose the chocolate chip pie with vanilla ice-cream. thinking about it now still makes my mouth water. chocolate chips and pecans melted into a delicious, warm, gooey pie. hands down the best chocolate chip pie i've ever had. my partner chose the cappuccino cake with chocolate ice-cream. the chocolate cake was rich and moist. the frosting was creamy but not overpoweringly sweet. best of all, the frosting tasted just like a cappuccino. feeling the need to take home a snack, we asked for s'mores to go. that's right, those same yummy campfire s'mores from your childhood. you can have them inside darryl's at your table, outside on the patio by their cool fire pit, or at home on your couch. they are so tasty; i wish i had another one!

the wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly. personal touches were added to item descriptions and our waiter shared his favorites from the menu. we were pleasantly surprised when asking about the temperature of the craft beer to find the wait staff was well informed and ready to share their knowledge.

bottom line: the food, service, and ambiance is a home run! reconnect with darryl's today!

darryl's on high point: best place to dine. i've been to darryl's wood fired grill on high point rd in greensboro north carolina more than any other restaurant in the past five months. since the opening of darryl's on october 10th 2010, i've eaten and met there more than ten times. the essence that darryls possesses intrigues senses, and allows me to visit continuously. each time, i always order something different on the menu, and the taste never fails. the interior of the resturant ranges from urban style to classic. very artistic and thought out sections within darryls create memorable moments, and calls customersbackin to experience more. i have experienced something new each time at darryls, and look alot forward to experiencing more.

the past has comebackto me!. while in greensboro christmas shopping, my wife and i stopped for a bite to eat at the historic darryls restaurant on high point road. being from winston-salem, we absolutely miss the 2 establishments that were once here and long for the fond memories and great food that once was darryls. visiting over the past few years saddened me because the food was simply par and some of the luster of darryls had perrished. so we gave it another shot and boy were we impressed! the service atmosphere was incredible! the wait staff treated you as if you were family. and the food? the food was incredible. from the old style wafer crackers to the potato soup, it really was a blast from the past. we enjoyed it so much that we returned a week later. what blew me away was that travis the manager and debra from the wait staff remembered our name. now we are making special trips to come and eat. also the cost was not as expensive as i would have thought. marty, i have to commend you on making an excellent restaurant!
