this is one of those posts that i have sat on for a while, not sure if i wanted to write. but here i am, six months later with the memory of this meal still clear as day. cucinaurbanahas always been one of those reliable restaurants with good food and maybe an even better vibe. entertaining out of towners for the weekend? execute easy decision making process, code name cucina urbana. everyone needs go-to restaurants so as to not feel the constant pressure of finding new gems all the time. at least i do.

a carnivorous fever dream, acclaimed executive chef joe magnanelli of cucina urbana (bankers hill) debuts beast feast! for his no holds barred menu, chef magnanelli uses local ingredients and takes a different approach to sustainability by avoiding waste and utilizing the whole animal instead of specific cuts. this quarterly off-menu, whole-animal dinner series begins on july 19th and runs through april of 2017 while exploring various seasonal “beasts” including whole fish, duck, cow, and pig as the star of each two-course, family-style meal.

this california-inspired italian restaurant between downtown and hillcrest has a warm and rustic atmosphere that’s a bit understated. the retail wine shop located inside the restaurant, allows guests to pick out their own bottle of wine and have it opened at table for a minimal corkage fee. read more in the ‘food lovers’ guide to san diego.’ polenta board at cucinaurbana(courtesy photo) print tweet this entry was posted in food and wine and tagged author , award winning food blog , award winning writer , beer , best san diego food blog , blogger , california writer , cheese ,

if you were to ask me my top 10 favorite overall restaurants in san diego, cucinaurbanawould be right at the top of this list.  their perfect balance of awesome food & drinks, plus decor and ambiance is hard to beat.  however, this is no big secret to most san diego anymore.  thus, it’s been quite awhile since we’ve been here due to their sheer popularity.  however, since we had family in town last week, we decided to plan a bit further ahead and made reservations early.  i’m glad we did. cucinaurbanais an italian inspired restaurant that keeps things simple, but interesting.  they are located right at the corner of 5th ave. and laurel st., very close to balboa park. we decided to eat family style this evening since it was a family dinner after all.  our first app was a cheese board which was on special.  3 cheeses for $8.  the first cheese on the left had an infusion of black truffles in it.  it was followed next by a smokey cheddar, and then a bold (but not over the top) blue che

get there early!. the remodel of laurel has been such a huge success for tracy. cucinaurbanahas been excellent everytime we happen to be able to dine there. reservations are difficult, but there is plenty of communal seating. the burrata appetizer is the best i have ever had. i always want to try different things on the menu but keep going back for it. pizza, pastas and the beet salad are also my favorites along with the chocolate dessert.

very tasty. we went to cucinaurbanaat the recommendation of a friend and during san diego restaurant week -

the environment is vibrant but not noisy in an obnoxious way. the decor is innovative, and the layout is very interesting.

the staff, the waitress was great - it was pretty busy but we did not have to wait long and our water glass was always filled, etc. the waitress was knowledgeable and recommended the best selections, and everything she confirmed was excellent, the appetizer, the main entree (short ribs, which sounded boring but she said it tasted like osso bucco, which i love, and she was right - it was very rich and flavorful). the bread pudding was a great dessert.

we would go here again for sure.
