chok chai thai restaurant

i don't write as much reviews as i should, but this place is a little gem. otahuhu has excellent vietnamese options but for some reason i was surprised to find this small, fairly sparsely appointed restaurant to have some of the better thai food i've enjoyed. 

the quality is excellent, they cater well to everything from my wife's 'extra mild' to full strength for me, and the lady at reception is superfriendlyand chatty and very happy to customise meals somewhat if required.

a real hidden gem and highly recommended.

it was our first time eating here, although it was 10 minutes to closing the owner allowed us to eat in which was really cool since we didn’t feel like maccas, bk etc.

realfriendlyowners and really helpful, fast ordering, food was delish! we ordered the nasi goreng, satay skewers, chicken cashew nuts and the mussels. all were very yum! we asked for more plates and they had no problem giving them out. also came with chilled water, not many places give out chilled water sometimes. awesome place with great food would highly recommend to anyone looking for a thai food place in otahuhu.

hidden gem in otahuhu with superfriendlyservice. i ordered the duck pad thai and was surprised by how delicious it was. very generous serving size.

will be back here for more classic thai dishes.

discovered this byo, awesome value, generous portions thai restaurant in otahuhu. the mains range from $11 - $15. authentic thai flavours,friendlystaff and perfect for a midweek dining out option. we're definately coming back here again

i tried their famous duck pad thai. it was okay, but was a bit underwhelmed that it did not live up to my expectations. their seafood tom yum did not have much seafood and soup was bland. curry puffs were yummy - so yummy that i did not mind burning my tongue from the filling. for everything that we ordered, we only paid less than 50 dollars.

what they lacked in taste, they surely made up in service. the manager and all the wait staff werefriendlyand accommodating. the manager even kept an eye on my naughty boy while wife and i were eating.

this is now one of our go-to restos of we just want a cheap eat and be spared from washing dishes.

we came here based on zomato reviews and were greeted by veryfriendlystaff. a caucasian guy, whom i believe is the owner, greeted us and served us water almost immediately so that's a great start!

we ordered duck pad thai, mixed entree, and panang chicken curry.

duck pad thai was not very good. the noodles are a little tough and chewy, and pretty sweet. however the duck was quite tender. would be better if the noodles are cooked a little longer so they are softer. less sweet sauce would be nice too.

in the mixed entree, the chicken satay sauce was pretty nice (but on the sweet side too) but the chicken satay meat was tough and chewy - a pity. the curry puff was average. the fish cakes are good, the spring rolls are crispy and full of fillings so those are good too.

the panang curry was overpowered with coconut milk although the flavour really grew on us as we ate. we requested for thai spicy level but it came out not spicy at all. the waitress gave us chilli sauce as she served the curry, saying that the curry is not spicy and that we can add the chilli as we eat. the chilli sauce was great!

overall i feel that their dishes tend to be on the sweet side, probably something that the locals would like? i personally find it too sweet and not enough balance between sweet and savoury. the portions are generous and the service was really nice. i give it a 3.5 because i really like the people there. i feel that they take pride in their restaurant, as can be seen from the decorations, menu, table number cards, and even their toilet is kept very clean. i like a place filled with love and pride and i do honestly think this restaurant has it. when i asked for warm water as it's cold outside, i was given a pot of hot water with lovely asian designed cups. these tiny details make an average place potentially good! i also like how they make the effort to have a photo for each dish on their menu. really really impressed with the amt of effort they put into this place.

it'd be lovely to see some changes to the taste of the food and i wouldn't hesitate to go back and support them!

have been here three times and they have been consistent and never dissapoint. everytime we go there staff are veryfriendly(very childrenfriendlytoo!). we go to alot of thai restaurants and this is one of my favourites. they also have vegan options.

you walk in and the place is clean and spacious for a small area. your greeted with afriendlysmile and great host.
now onto the real mccoy the food!!! have been here a few times since discovering this place and each time we are impressed. food is tasty, chef caters to your spicy needs, portions are generous and food is brought out quick smart. how could i forget price is reasonable.
highly recommended.

i've been coming here for lunch a lot. i'm a noodle soup fan and i think chok thai would be the best i've had in auckland so far. huge serving. no skimping on the ingredients so good value for your money.friendlyservice. nice clean restaurant.
