charlie & jake's bar-b-que

we have been going tocharlieand jake's beachside for many years. the food is consist, always good, and generous portions. on our most recent trip, we had a superb server named taylor who was super friendly & provided exceptional service! not only is their barbecue wonderful but their country vegetables are always a hit!

had a very late dinner atcharlieand jake's. arrived 15 minutes before closing and was greeted cheerfully. service was extremely fast, food was terrific. asked for coffee and was told in a very pleasant manner, that it would be a few minutes, as they were brewing a fresh pot. i thought that was very impressive, as they were closing shortly. taylor, our waitress, certainly did a good job of making us feel welcome. will definely return.

great service! we always try and get taylor. she is one of the best waitress' we've ever had. the food atcharlieand jakes is never a disappointment. it keeps us coming back. tonight the ribs were so tended and full of flavor. the meat literally fell off the none.

charlie & jake's - great place to eat. at least twice a month, i drive thrucharlie& jake's in ihb. debbie is usually at the window and always greets me with a smile and if i remembered to call my order in ahead of time - everything is ready to go. we love everything on the menu, but are especially fond of their butterfly fried shrimp. the service is always great, the food fantastic, the order correct, and the service time fast. we lovecharlie& jake's! they are warm & welcoming. treat you like family and make you want to come back!

amazing bbq, rivals the best. if you blink on your way to the beach, you might just miss the best bbq experience of your life. like the great bbq places sprinkled throughout the country, (like sweatman's in sc, lexington bbq, in e. nc, winks in w. nc,) this gem sits on on the side of road with a drive thru that makes it suggest that it is some plain, boring fast-food joint. this could be nothing further from the truth! pull up on the side, and sneak a peek of the massive smokers and the pile of fresh cut wood....this is where the true pittmaster does his work. whoever is running this joint, has it figured out....because this is, hands-down, some of the best bbq in the country. i happened upon it by the recommendation of a friend of friend who said this was a must stop for bbq. boy was he right! i came in right about lunch time and there was a small wait for a table....not a big deal. i grabbed a sam adams seasonal on draft, and watched a little sportscenter while i stood and waited, and the smells that were coming out this place made my mouth water like crazy! my waitress was amazing (and pretty good looking which is always a nice plus :0), and i went with her suggestion for the pulled pork sandwich on texas toast. it came with 2 sides, ...i could not resist the baked beans and fried pickles.....and i started with some hushpuppies which were golden brown and perfect...oh yeah, and the corn....so delish! but the bbq.....good grief was it some of the best i have ever had ....(i don't mean to keep repeating it....but it really is that good)! the pork had an intense flavor, and my sandwich had those beautiful crusty caramelized pieces that were so good which are rare to find sometimes, but the waitress assured me that they are in every meal ordered!
the place is quaint and small with a nice patio. you can't beat the price.... i was in and out for under $20. if you find yourself in the area this is a must stop!!!!

please note: boy did i make this mistake....there is anothercharlieand jake's and i stopped on my way out of town, and boy did i make a mistake. this is a brewery that apparently is not associated with my mouth-watering, pulled pork caramelized delicousness......this place puts the focus on the beer and not the meat, and i was really let down at the dry, "not as good as the othercharlieand jake's" bbq that i had the day prior. :0( boo....so don't make the same mistake i made. if you are looking for the brewery it is on the other side of town. if you are looking for one of the best bbq experiences of a lifetime... "get it right" as they say and get tocharlieand jake's beachside!

beach sidecharlieand jakes is not the same. i have to say my last experience atcharlieand jakes on beachside was terrible.
the ribs were tuff,,not falling off the bone like it use to be.. the rub they used was to spicy hot
the beans tasted like campbell.s pork and beans with some of there pulled pork in it.
there chicken was dry. what happened?
i use to go frequently. but since it has been under new ownership he has changed everything that madecharlieand jakes great!
what happened tocharlieand jakes when you couldn't even get in the door. you need to get that back and go back to basis.

i wanted to love this place. i do enjoy eating at thecharlieand jakes on wickham, but this one is closer to home. different owner, but the same name. ever since gators closed, i wanted someone to come into this location and replace what was a great place to eat. it hadn’t happened yet, but i had high hopes for this new restaurant. so we went there this evening. because the restaurant was rather cold inside, we decided to sit at a high-top in the outside bar area. our first impression was of a foul odor, like you would smell from sewer gases. not sure if it originates from the restaurant or from nearby, but it was pretty constant throughout our meal. my husband ordered a beer and i ordered a glass of wine. now, i order wine in every restaurant we go to, and the amount served varies from place to place, but most places used to pour 6 ounces, and today, many pour about 5 ounces. tonight i was served about 3.5 ounces, maybe 4. i will say it was 4, and i paid $9 for it. unusual, considering the price. it wasn’t anything special. as for dinner, my husband ordered a combo of bbq and i ordered a salad with fried chicken. his meal was acceptable. mine was not. i had a metal bowl with very dark green romaine, a pile of huge, and i mean huge, wedges of partially ripe tomatoes, and about half a pound of shredded cheese. mixed in were a few bits of fried chicken. it was almost impossible to see the actual chicken…inside the coating it ranged from non-existent to about 1/3 of an inch thick. i though it must be a joke. i often order this kind of salad. thecharlieand jakes on wickham has an awesome one with lots of chicken, eggs, diced tomatoes, bacon, etc. and texas roadhouse, right across the street, is fabulous, too. i could not believe i was charged $11 for this meal. the wait staff was good. they asked if we enjoyed the meal and we were honest with them. it was not their fault and we told them so. well…we tried this place…we hoped to like it a lot…we didn’t and, we will never go there again. next time, texas roadhouse. yum.

new place opened across the street from old place.  too big, very loud.  not vegetarian-friendly at all.  the only thing i could eat non-meat was the shrimp which was way too fried and took way too long to come out.  ok i get it this is a barbeque place and there's lots of meat but when you are w/ a group there's bound to be a vegetarian.  take notecharlien jakes !!  i won't be back if the menu does not change and the service does not speed it up.

we love going tocharlie& jakes taylor is a # 1 waitress in our book .the food is the best around ..

absolutely delish!. we live in indian harbour beach & decided to get take-out fromcharlie& jake's tonight. the pulled pork, black-eyed peas, and turnip greens were soooo good & believe it or not, so were the potato skins (served w/plenty of bacon & sour cream). we called ahead & everything was ready when we got there....thanks to debbie!

been coming tocharlieand jakes since the 90's and it only seems to get better. the pulled pork sandwich on garlic toast is my favorite lunch item. taylor has been my server for ~2 years now. she knows my order and has it to the kitchen before i'm at my table. check this place out, you won't be disappointed!

i have high standards for bbq andcharlie& jakes falls way short. the sliced beef is bottom round, which isn't the greatest for smoking to begin with. turkey was over cooked. ribs were good, but none of the food had any smoke flavor and required to be drown in bbq sauce whichwas also pretty bland. i won't be back.
