waffles waffles waffles. i will give it a like as a "don't like" is too harsh. the service this sunday was horrible, the staff totally disinterested in kids, not friendly, not helpful and when you are new the menu having pre-built and build your own takes a minute to read. the girl taking the order seemed annoyed it took so long. a squirt of whip cream for $1-2? i have no idea what i paid but was disappointed. "we are out of orange juice" ... ok what else do you have? ... no reply... we found our own way to the water.. the only other option besides tea and coffee. it was quite expensive and the auto tip on the machine is insulting. i order at a counter just like a coffee shop or fast food place, receive horrible service and have to stand there and leave a tip before my food is up.. for me to pick up.
the paper on the cookie sheets immediately rips when you cut the waffle so you eat paper.

i hope the kinks get worked out as its a super cute spot and idea... but i shouldn't have to pay $2 for maple syrup or the amount that i am given.

nice, trendy decor. i really like the self-served cafeteria style. my friend and i ordered the lemon and the cinnamon buns waffles, they are both pretty good. the waffles were crispy on the outside and nice and soft in the inside. i definitely enjoyed them very much. definitely coming back.

light airy with excellent toppings. precisely as advertised.

the lemon (lemon curd and goat cheese) was a delight.

favourite by far was rachel's cinnamon bun.

buttermilk fine waffles, the highly anticipated waffle restaurant owned by sam friley opened at the end of last week. a couple of months ago, when sam was in the middle of construction we ran into each other at village ice cream.

he explained his vision to me; to have consistency with how the waffles are made, and to have a simple menu of toppings that would compliment traditional buttermilk waffles. i've been watching the restaurant unfold on social media, catching glimpses of what was in store. one of the things that piqued my interest the most was the fact that delicious waffles would be available both day, and night.

buttermilk opened last thursday, and i went for dinner on friday. the place looks great, with fun little decor pieces. waffles are available as singles, or in pairs, with a selection of preset options like; blueberry with crème fraîche, lemon curd with goat cheese (which is what i had), and waffles topped with village ice cream, keeping things in the friley family. there's also an à la cart option, so you can build your own.

the waffles are golden perfection. i need to go back as soon as possible. turns out calgary already loves buttermilk, they were so busy over the weekend, they had to close to regroup for a few days. fret not, they reopen this thursday, may 21st. directly from their instagram this is what they've gone through in mere days:

1200 oranges (for freeze squeezed orange juice)
960 eggs
30 kg of pecans
240 l of buttermilk
125 l of phil and sebastian coffee
and almost every single ounce of our staff of thirteen's human strength!

a few days to regroup sounds like a great idea!

just heard that there was a new waffle place that opened up at 17th and wanted to give it a try. waffles are good, a little crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. i ordered the village (ice cream, toffee and pecans) and it was just perfectly paired with a cup of p&s on the side. yum. i wanted to try their orange juice but unfortunately they ran out that day.

however, i do find the prices just a little bit over, considering the plating (which is just a tray and a wax paper on top) and the size. i guess just more work on the plating can make this better. it's just that everytime i take a slice out of my waffle, the wax paper slides off the tray and i kinda want more waffles for that amount of money.

anyways, buttermilk is also a good place for catching up. a waffle and coffee on the side while chit-chatting is quite a nice setting. i'll come back for the orange juice and probably try out the fruit waffle.

my sister & mother-in-law and i (with babes in tow) had been planning to get together for breakfast at some point this week. when i realized that the planned meeting time was also the opening day at buttermilk fine waffles, i knew it was meant to be.

little to be desired.... i was initially excited about this place, but once i tried it (twice), i quickly became very disappointed. there was little left to be desired. the rundown: little value (not much bang for your buck), waffles were not crispy on the outside (but was fluffy on the inside), and poor presentation/plating. i really was hoping for something more decadent. please see nero (vancouver-based waffle shop) to see what i was imagining buttermilk would be like.

my recommendation to management: buff up your all your waffles (not a la carte) with a half-scoop of village ice cream, topped with freshly whipped cream and sprinkled with some light icing sugar, and served with complimentary real maple syrup on the side for anyone interested. we won't mind the prices for as long as if we feel like we're getting value out our order.

will return in few months for a re-review.

...needs a lot of work. i was really looking forward to the opening of buttermilk, but unfortunately after trying it out, i will most likely not return until i hear good things about it.

first of all the prices are ridiculous for what you get.

there's nothing special about the waffles which is unfortunate. the presentation of the dish needs work. the waffles are presented on a tray covered with wax paper. when you cut into the waffle, you may get a few mouthfuls of wax paper too.

it would be great if they could come up with unique recipes that you would not be able to get anywhere else. but for now, i recommend going to any other breakfast/brunch place to get your waffle fix. you will have a better variety of flavors.

buttermilk has a great location and the restaurant is cute.

waffles are light and well cooked.
little over priced for what you get. fruit waffles comes with only strawberries. overall nice place and decor, would come again.

menu not unique for prices. waffles are ok nothing special though. need to upgrade menu as you can get the same flavours (quality is debatable) form any place that serves waffles.

nope nope nope.... obscene mark up on a poorly prepared product. are we so hipster that we can't eat off plates anymore? little pieces of parchment paper with every bite makes it more delicious...

overpriced for quality of the food. i like obd, phil & sebastian, village ice cream, but the difference is that the quality of their ingredients/end product is evident. i don*t mind paying a few more dollars for a higher quality -- and often healthier -- product. buttermilk, however, appears to charge high prices for cheap ingredients, which is frustrating to say the least.

a meal consisting of two waffles and a drink will run you a minimum of $15-$20, excluding tip. the fresh squeezed orange juice was good, and it was neat that it was essentially made-to-order. the waffles themselves appear to be made of plain, grocery store quality ingredients with assorted toppings, all of which appeared pretty basic -- the exclusion being the waffle which included a scoop of village ice cream. for $8 a waffle, i would expect to see some higher quality flours and recipes - for example, having the blueberries mixed into the batter for the blueberry waffle, or a gluten-free waffle. given that this is supposed to be a restaurant that is all about waffles, i also expected to see more than 5 different waffle variations, that all use an identical flour/base. (4 if you exclude the plain waffle).

overall, it seems like a lot of money was poured into graphic design and restaurant decor at the expense of food quality and kitchen equipment. the blueberry waffle i had was good, but either the price needs to be lowered, or the quality of the food raised for me to return. if anyone from the bfw reads this, i would recommend a to-go option in the future to keep up with the high demand and limited seating.

excellent new addition to mission. buttermilk fine waffles is a bright new star in mission these days, following it on instagram i've seen that they have sold out of their entire inventory in the first few days. walking in today for breakfast i can sure see why. i walked in about 10min after opening their doors at 10am and it was nearly half full already. the interior is bright, warm and cozy, with all the space used well to maximize seating. the ordering process and menu was simple and efficient which is nice since there always tends to be a little queue. once ready to order i was met by a young friendly face who explained all my options as i asked...even though the menu was right in front of me. they have a small selection of "standardized" waffles with fixed toppings as well as an a la carte section for those who would rather customize their own. i oped for "the fruit" double waffle and a fresh squeezed orange juice.

the order came up quick and my waffle was warm and looking delicious. the fruit is a belgian waffle topped with fresh fruit (seasonal) whipped cream, fruit cream (a cream cheese, cream and berry mixture) and a drizzle of berry syrup. the waffle was light, fluffy and fresh. the strawberries were fresh and cool against the warm waffle. the berry cream was the most surprising as i had expected it to be quite sweet and heavy it actually wasn't. it balanced the sweetness with the waffle and syrup and was quite balanced and not to heavy. i would for sure come back for this waffle again.

my only concern is their plating method, which is a baking tray lined with parchment paper. i love the idea of the baking tray as a plating device, however, the parchment paper tears easily and tends to slide around with your waffle while your trying to cut it. i had to pay a little extra attention not to ingest any parchment paper with my waffle. that being said, i would not consider this to be a major issue.

the price point was very fair for the amount of food at $14 for the double waffle and $5 for the fresh orange juice. i could perhaps liked a larger glass of oj for $5, however, that's my opinion.

all in all, a very successful first visit. i would highly recommend buttermilk fine waffles to anyone wanting to try somewhere and something new in the mission area. they are open from 10am-10pm for all day waffle goodness! go check them out!

it's just ok. first thought: no savoury waffles?
second thought: why so expensive? 8$ for one waffle?
third thought: waffle itself tastes good but...
last thought: the first two thoughts again, and where i was going to eat my next meal?
