brian's 24 is located in the historic st. james hotel in the gaslamp quarter. brian's does not lack accolades, so i stopped by to see for myself what all the fuss was about. we sat outside on the patio to enjoy the san diego weather and struck up a conversation with some folks from l.a. who had stopped in to try a dessert. let's just say i didn't leave room for dessert.

the first thing you notice as you walk up to brian's is that historic gaslamp feel. the beautiful hotel lobby features a bar and dining area that really takes you back in time. the ambiance is exactly what you are looking for when dining on comfort food. there is a grand, hand-crafted mahogany bar (obtained from actress joan crawford's estate), a beautiful crystal chandelier and a tin ceiling.

i know brian's 24 is famous for their breakfasts, but i like to try a little bit of everything. so, weorderedthe pizza tots and a couple of local craft beers, a perfect combo. oddly enough, tater tots go really well with melted mozzarella cheese and chopped pepperoni, then smothered in a rich, delicious, house-made marinara sauce. imagine that! the heaping mound of tots made me nervous about what was to come. the portions were huge!

now for the famous breakfast that i had heard so much about! weorderedthe chicken and waffles and krab cake benedict. growing up in houston, i have had my fair share of chicken and waffles, so i was really excited to try them at brian's. i had never tried krab cakes benedict, but it sounded too good to pass up.

the fried chicken was served with wonderful fluffy belgian waffles, creamy butter and warm syrup. the crispy fried chicken had an abundance of flavor from the special seasoning. the sweet syrup, mixed with the waffles, after the saltiness of the chicken brought me back to a special place i call home. you must not walk down 6th avenue without stopping in brian's to find out exactly what i mean!

weordereda stack of butter milk pancakes, because what breakfast is complete without them, right? needless to say, with the krab cake benedict on its way i was being very careful to save room in my stomach. the krab cake benedict reminded me of a dish right off bourbon street. delicious golden brown crab cakes and two poached eggs served on a split english muffin and topped with a creamy hollandaise sauce. the combination of crispy krab cakes and flavorful hollandaise sauce worked really well. if you are fan of krab cakes, you must try this dish. morning, noon or night!

hotcakes kick ass!!!!!. i had asked the concierge at the u s grant for a great place for breakfast. he told me to check out brians. as i walked passed the place it was packed and noisy. i went to the house of blues intead. (read my review of that place too). a few days later i was doing laundry at a local laundromat, and asked where a good place was to get coffee. he told me there was a lively place on 6th. i discovered he was talking about brians. no one was in there at 8am on a monday morning, so i sat at the bar and only planned on getting coffee. i decided what the heck andordereda short stack of hotcakes.
now, i have to say that i make my pancakes using bisquick, and i love them. when i go out for pancakes i love ihop. the pancakes at brians kicked ass!!! they were the best pancakes i have ever eaten. two days later i took my girlfriend there and just to make sure, i had a full stack, with crispy bacon (the bacon was fabulous too) and they were just as good. missy at the bar was great, but the waiter i had the second time was a bit slow. i would go back again though.

save your money. go to denny's. this was my first time there. the food was so-so but very overpriced and then they added a service charge on top of it. we were going to go out and celebrate a special occasion afterwards but they killed it for me. there were only 4 or 5 other people there and it took nearly half an hour to get our food. horrible in my opinion. my girlfriend wrote to the owner.

this comment is for the owner of the brian's 24. tonight was the first night for me to dine at your restaurant. i wanted to add a suggestion for you to include on your menu. i recommend that you write somewhere on a wall or note on the menu that "a gratuity charge will be automatically added for orders that cost over $90." my party and i (4 people total) were shocked that a gratuity charge was placed on our bill. i did see on the menu that gratuity is added to parties of 6 or more but no where did we see that it would be added to bills greater than $90. i've never encountered this before at other restaurants and it seemed unbelievable but your server, vanesa, reassured us that this is your company's business practice. i suggested for her to tell the owner that this should be listed somewhere. after we told her this didn't sound right, she offered to take the gratuity off for us, which made the automatic gratuity charge sound even more phony. we were at your restaurant on 4/6/2010 between 8:45pm to 10:05 pm. we sat at a table in the front of the restaurant and did not go to the bar except once to obtain a chilled glass which our server failed to give us after our request for one. as mentioned earlier, our hostess/bartender/server was vanesa. weordereda cranberry vodka, a long island ice tea, a white zinfandel, and a corona for drinks. our meals were a jambalaya linguine, philly cheese steak, rib-eye with egg burrito, and a sampler. our gratuity was approximately $17. and our bill was a total of $111.31. i am writing this to you to let you know that the automatic gratuity charge for bills greater than $90 is an unusual practice for many restaurants. i write this in hopes that you will better communicate to your customers who would unwittingly fall victim to this strange automatic charge. the food and service tonight was mediocre but we almost always tip 20% (we tip more when service is great). i am still shocked that a gratuity is charged for bills over $90. and i feel confident that customers who were in my same position left brian's 24 with the same sense of shock and disbelief that a business does this.

the owner replied back and said it was up to the sever to add this charge. did i mention our server was the hostest, bartender, and our waitress. save your money and go to denny's, same food, better service much cheaper.
