this could quite possibly be the most wonderful restaurant in sydney. from the moment we walked into the stylishly designed and decorated dinner spot, to the the time we reluctant exited; my partner and i experienced the finest service, ambiance and dining experience either of us care to remember. will return frequently.

left you wanting more. loved it, table of two couples we ordered the recommended amount of dishes for 4 people which was 5. after we finished we took a vote and chose two extra dishes of the ones we had already eaten the fried chicken and the lamb nuggets won. the servings are portioned out to suit 4 people who get one of each item in most cases so you get only a small amount of each dish which were all moreish. will be back!

came last night as a group of 6. we were told it'd be an hr to hr and a half wait for a table. we knew that it'd take a while and it wasn't a problem so we went over to earls for a drink while we waited. we came back after an hour and a quarter to a frosty reception. we were told it was very busy and it'd be in our best interests to go somewhere else for a drink as there would be a long wait. after having waited 1hr 15 i wouldn't have thought waiting on site and having a drink there would have been a problem but the waiter seemed reluctant to let us wait there. he followed this by saying 'i told you you're table would be an hour and a half so it will be ready at 8:45pm sharp'. we made a decision to leave and walked away with all six of us saying that we felt he'd wanted us to leave. no idea why we couldn't wait and have a drink on the premises for 15mins. we've all been to bloodwood a number of times before and absolutely love the food. as a fellow small business owner in newtown i know how important service is and can only suggest they lose the rude front man and treat ppl that who are willing to wait for a table with a little more courtesy.

bloodwood restaurant is a tapas type style dining experience in newtown. the 87% like rate is reflective of the great well cooked and flavoursome food, relaxing atmosphere and customer experience. i suggest at least 2-3 dishes per person. most of the dishes are $17-$25 so it can add up but worthwhile for that taste of a bit posh.  every single dish that i ordered was so very tasty. delicious! the polenta chips with blue cheese gorgonzola sauce ($9) are always good to start with. (pictured above); little rectangles of perfectly cooked polenta with the naughty sauce. the wasabi fried chicken ($17) with avocado marscapone was very tasty.  it was not spicy at all but just very well cooked chicken that sat on smooth avocado marscapone. i wish there were more pieces! a little bit steep at $17 for three pieces but it was delicious (pictured below). the seared venison with mustard glaze ($25) was served with green garlic, brussel sprouts and kumera. the flavours were amazing and the venison was perfectly cooked. again, if only there were more pieces of venison to devour. equally enjoyable was a small butter poached snapper ($24) was served with peas, garlic chives, olive oil and tea crumbs. the pea and olive oil broth really brought out the flavours of the fish. the special one off that night (which was not on the menu) was the miso scallop ($5) which i devoured in an instant. dessert was asian dumplings, green tea ice cream with black sesame clusters, mango pieces and coconut shavings. dessert was great but did not quite match the food that i ordered prior.  but that's my fault - i choose the dessert! overall, a great experience with fantastic food, relaxing atmosphere sitting outside in their court yard and attentive customer service. a good restaurant for date or intimate catch up. prices: $50 or $60 per head location: not far from newtown station, 416 king st, newtown

don't go there if you're hungry. i discovered after i sat down that this is a tapas restaurant, & i was hungry, so i asked the waitress what she would recommend. she said that the cheaper dishes were smaller, but pointed out the ones that were mains. i chose a fish dish, $24. after a long wait, an extremely small amount of food turned up.

eating at a normal pace, neither slow nor fast, the bowl was empty in just over three minutes. a complete joke. the other extravagantly tattooed & mustachioed waiter then asked me if i wanted to donate to their homeless person help program, & i replied that perhaps he should donate two thirds of what i was required to pay for the minuscule amount of food i was presented with, because a third of the price is all it was worth.

night started great with friendly staff and amazing cocktails. we let the manager know that the prawns were a little under cooked. he gave us full on attitude and told us if we were lying he will not exchange it (didn't even ask us if we want the prawns cooked more). never seen anyone so rude in my life at a so called decent restaurant.

these bloodwoods's polenta chips created a traffic chaos. everyone stopped and wanted a serving. if you saw this, you would've stopped too. thick, chunky polenta chips in a light golden crispy golden batter - a crowd favourite. despite being a hot, humid day, these hot polenta chips tasted amazing with gorgonzola sauce...

delicious treat!. i love this place (polenta chips with blue cheese anyone?!) and often think i wish i could go more often! the food is seasonal, really tasty, often surprisingly inventive with combinations that treat the palate, and made using great quality ingredients. the only downside? a bit expensive. having said that, i have never felt like i needed more food than 'entree/main or main/dessert', it is fabulous to share, and the attention to detail makes the price more bearable for a date night or any special occasion. the ambiance is quirky but relaxed and the cocktails are also very well done.

okay but overrated. i have wanted to try bloodwood for ages and finally went with 3 friends on friday night. we had to wait 45 mins for a table but we were expecting that so that was fine.
the service was good and staff friendly. we ordered the banquet which was $55 a head...and the cheapest bottle of wine we could find was also $55 - a bit expensive i feel! they rushed us through each dish, at any given time we had 3 dishes on the table at once and we felt rushed and overwhelmed. one person at my table had eaten here before an raved about the food and said it wasn’t as good this time. i was pretty disappointed in the food but maybe my expectations were too high. with so many other food options in newtown, i cant imagine i will be returning any time soon.

nice food, poor service. we attended as a group of 12 (so the bill was over $1000) for a celebration last night and were very disappointed with the service. we were rushed through the degustation- the mains were confiscated before we had finished, and while still finishing our desserts it was announced by the waiter that he "needed the table in 4 minutes". we weren't particularly slow or late so this rush only came from the restaurant's over-booking. the food was very nice, particularly the desserts, so it was a shame we weren't given a chance to enjoy it.
