it was my first time visiting the restaurant. i wanted to try something aussie, so my husband and i decided to have steak for dinner.

i ordered wagyu ramp cam with organic carrot and charcoal pumpkin. the meat was fresh and of high quality, however i expected it to be more tender and have more flavour.

my husband ordered angus rib eye with tomatina. it was the same, goodbeef but lack of seasonings. dipping it to the sauce did not help much. but his marinated tomato was much better than my carrot and charcoal pumpkin.

we went there on saturday night, the place was busy and service was slow.

delicious!. went there for a celebratory meal based on the reviews we read on urbanspoon. they were booked out both friday and saturday night (agoodsign to me) and luckily we got a booking for two on the sunday night. we went with the chef's selection and were thoroughly impressed. highlights for us were the white asparagus wrapped in prosciutto with a cheesy sauce and the suckling lamb & pig. they were very generous with the meat portions and we struggled to finish it all. but we did have space for the apple cake, which wasn't too heavy, and a nice way to finish off a lovely meal. would highly recommend to go here!

was really looking forward to what sounded like agoodcut of meat. we had the striploin and ordered a side of mushrooms. meat came out cold, and said side would be out shortly. they totally forgot the side dish. had zero seasoning and just tasted totally bland and not tender. didn't offer any salt or pepper and none on table. i had to ask twice for the side before it finally came out... and by then i reluctantly finished the steak... so i was eating a small bowl of button mushrooms by themselves, yay. overpriced. service although friendly was a let down and overall just walked away feeling totally ripped off. won't ever be back

we visited on a saturday night. there were two sittings: 6-8pm and 8-10pm. we took the earlier and had a set menu / degustation for 2 ppl at $55pp. it included 4 appetisers/entrees and two mains.

the red pepper stuffed with crab and prawn paste was lovely.

i thought the rest was average to be honest. the two mains - slow cooked suckling pig with apple sauce, and the slow cooked lamb with garlic sauce/aioli was way too meaty and heavy. it was served with tomatoes in olive and capers, and baby roast potato. the capers and tomatoes helped to lift it all. unfortunately the sauces didn’t do much to enhance flavours of the meats and they really needed the lift because they were both so heavily - flavour wise and density wise.

given how heavy the end of that meal was, we couldn’t even try desserts. we felt quite uncomfortable from the meats.

it was a hot evening and the spanish beer we ordered- estrella - was a nice, light accompaniment for the food and the weather.

the waiter was quite friendly. he kept asking what we thought of the food all night. we weregooduntil the meats, and we tried to tell him that it he wasn’t interested. and all the chatter that we experienced throughout the dinner turned into a frown and silent treatment when we paid without giving a tip. something i did not expect.

food 5 ⭐️. ambience 5 ⭐️ service 5⭐️

was in canberra for work, my partner came down to see me for two nights..... when he was on the bus i said get zomato and then look at places we can go for dinner. it was so funny we had chosen the same two restaurant marble and grain and then black fire. we walked into marble and grain then they said they where fully booked even though they where half empty so then we said let’s go to black fire.

we called black fire to make a reservation. they said if you come buy 9:30 yes we can do.

we open the door to the restaurant t and was greeted by the waiter. we said we called and they said one moment please. they took us to our table.

my partner and i where looking at the menu and i was telling him how much i felt like steak ect. then the waiter come over and said. i’m
just letting you know we also have a tasting option where you get 4 entree and two mains for 55 per person. we looked at each other and said ok let’s do it.

so the first entree came out it was smoked chorizo bruschetta. was so tasty!

the second entree, was stuffed pepper with crab 🦀 and prawn 🍤 mouse l. it was so nice well balanced in flavour.

the 3rd entree was tuna mousse on a thin cracker.
it was creamy it melted in the mouth,

then the 4th entree was stuffed eggplant with lamb and tomato home-made purée on top.
it taste sweet but well balanced.

then they brought out prosciutto with bread! it was so fresh it taste a slight salty but one of the best prosciutto i have tasted! (my partner and i was like what’s this we already had 4 mains i said i have no clue.

then the mains came out... it was 1 piece of lamb and one piece or pork. boy where we blown away with the lamb. 10/10 so moist and tasty.

the pork was nice but a little blend after the lamb. but still nice.

the experience was reallygoodand i highly recommend this restaurant. even though we came just before closing time. they didn’t rush us or make us feel uncomfortable it was an amazing experience!!!

unfortunately this was just about average. each of the ten dishes were not quitegoodenough to be great. for example the rib eye was over cooked, the baby octopus said it came with crispy potato and actually only had three shavings of potato (wtf?), the yummy slow roasted wagyu was covered in a not very nice under seasoned gravy, the coulant was tasty but over cooked and not oozing chocolate ... sigh just not quite there. pretty expensive too so all in all a bit disappointing.

may 2018 - let's add this is the second time here and drop the stars from 4 to 2 and we will never be back. firstly, my colleague called to book a table for 12 only to be told it would have to be a set menu decided by the chef on the night of $55 a person as we had too many in the one group and weren't allowed to order from the normal menu. we all reluctantly agreed. second the wine list for second hand quality wine was $39 a bottle, yeah, i don't think so. third.....it took 2 whole hours with ages between each entree to come out. the service was very very very slow. the entree platters were...just okay and i'm talking okay, plain....not great or anything to write home about....not five star food as i already stated a month ago. when we finally got the main, 2 hours later.....the pork and lamb were actuallygoodbut the wagyu beef slices were absolutely disgusting. this is supposed to be rare and tender. they were rare, which was fine but when i tried to eat my first bite, it was like eating leather with gristle sinew through it. i cut the tiny centre out of another tiny piece, this seemed okay but the third time on another piece had the same gristle sinew. a very big let down and disgusting. we did have to ask several times when the next round would be out as it was taking so long. the waiter took it upon himself to order for us two more bottles of wine of which i stopped and said, the price is not worth it for the cheapness. now, he decided to order these 2 extra bottle without asking us first. ......again.....disappointed. we will not be back to this overpriced place again. such a let down to our day. picture of gristle sinew wagyu attached......

april 2018 - first time here and would come back. while the food was good, it wasn't 5 star or worth the praise some seem to give it. my eye fillet was actually cooked perfect but presented by itself on a huge, brown, bumpy plate. don't get me wrong, i loved the plate but for presenting food that is brown also and for cutting on, not agoodchoice. the mashed potato was agoodconsistency but there was absolutely no flavour at all. for the price i would have expected flavour. my colleague had the sides of carrot and char grilled pumpkin with her steak and there was an abundance of flavour. we each ordered a dessert and shared them, both were delicious if over priced. i would come back and would recommend to others. i'm a harsh reviewer as i really like decent food at an acceptable price.

first time here, food was ok not extremelygoodbut not bad either had the slow roasted wagyu and ravioli shared. feel that the presentation could be better.
the dessert was however quitegoodandgoodvalue as well. definitely recommend trying the 4 bites of the chef, did notice though from others picture 2-3 out of the 4 seems to be the same, would have thought this is something that would be updated occasionally.
food arrived in a timely manner, the day we went wasn’t quite full perhaps still early or due to public holiday.

enjoyed a great saturday lunch at this place. everyone appreciated howgoodthe food was. full of flavour. classy combinations. true, the sides were largely an afterthought - but i must say i will be going back to this place again soon. that lamb and pasta dish was devine. thanks for making our stop in such a memorable time.

solid steak and mediterranean fare. the bell peppers with crab meat were not agoodcombination. the tenderloin steak was cooked well and the sides were okay but not outstanding. the highlight were the desserts with the cranberry tart with chocolate mousse being very popular and delicious

just had dinner at black fire with friends...a much anticipated event. we had the $55 banquet menu which delivered to my expectations.  the suckling pig and lamb where exceptional and the other tapas style dishes were thoroughly enjoyable. the standout dish was the artichokes. artichokes are either brilliant or terrible and i would have been happy with these artichokes as  meal in their own right.
atmosphere, for a friday night wasgoodwithout overpowering and the service was friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming.
generous servings as well.
a verygoodespresso rounded out the night and confirmed braddon's culinary reputation in canberra.
black fire has room to improve but i cannot fault it from the value for money perspective. it has a well deserved reputation and i hope it stays around for some time to come.

i had dinner here with seven friends. when i was making the reservation (approximately one week in advance), i was told the only time they could seat us would be 6pm - except that on the night the restaurant was half empty for the entire time we were there.

and we were there for a verrrrry long time, because some people in the group chose to have the banquet option. which was fine, except that the kitchen didn't take into account that the rest of us were sitting there for over an hour between our entrees and our mains.

when they eventually arrived, most of the mains were quitegood- i had a decent wagyu rump steak. however, one of my friends ordered duck and it was absolutely awful. she could barely chew it because it was so tough, and it also tasted very strongly of coriander (which she hates).

unfortunately, she refused to make a complaint, and the wait staff didn't comment on the fact that her plate of food was barely touched when they collected the plates.

have walked past this place many times and have always been intrigued by the menu so i took the plunge and took my partner for dinner. decided on the calamari for starters which was tender and bursting with char grilled flavour, agoodstart i thought. the mains followed shortly thereafter. i had the rump, medium with the white bean, chorizo and tomato side. the meat was perfectly cooked and the side was complimentary in flavour. my partner had the fillet which was meant to be medium but arrived well done. the dish was sent back and as the restaurant was fully booked and we were on a tight timeline to vacate our table there was not the opportunity to have a replacement meal provided. the staff were apologetic and we were not charged for the returned dish but unfortunately this spoiled an otherwise enjoyable night out.
