definitely my favorite breakfast spot in athens. they offer at least 2 gourmet, local coffees every day and they have the freshest bakery in the city. my wife and i usually get the a la carte withfrenchtoast, a legendary biscuit with local made jam, and some fresh protein! they also offer amazing quiche that is made fresh daily and comes in many varities. i can't recommend this place enough!

the café is spacious with plenty of booths and tables to choose from. they have a good selection on the menu and i quickly settled on the rainbow trout sandwich. melanie chose the grilled cheese on wheat with tomato. i got a bag of sea salt & vinegar chips while melanie went with thefrenchfries.

grilled cheese sandwich on wheat with gruyere and provolone cheeses and sliced tomatoes. served withfrenchfries. big city bread cafe, athens ga
the food hit the spot and tasted delicious. the rainbow trout was done perfectly. the tomatoes on both my sandwich and melanie’s grilled cheese, were hearty, fresh and tasted great. melanie thought the fries were the best ever!

when in athens, we suggest you venture off the beaten path and find your way to big city bread cafe! guten appetit!

there are a lot places that muck upfrenchtoast. these folks have it figured out. even though it was a bit pricey ($7), i did not care one iota.

big city bread. a good spot with a local athens feel. outdoor seating is available and there's also plenty of parking, which can sometimes be any issue with other local restaurants. the breakfast was good and we tried a number of different things. thefrenchtoast and the biscuits were the standouts, which is understandable since they're known for the bread. i look forward to trying it for lunch.

all things good and plenty. big city bread cafe is one of, or tied for 1st, in my opinion, for the best brunch, (however you define that), in athens. i mean they have great lunches, breakfasts, sandwiches, supper/dinners...and all good. always busy, fresh, fresh ingredients, and friendly service, although, occasionally one may get a server better or less than another -- i chalk it up to college town, and for me, there's no worries here. baguettes, a horn of plenty, take a couple home if they are available, egg dishes, frenchtoast, variety of syrups, i assume home-made,soups - all delish..and i had to chuckle at one post-er who had never heard of, i think it was- salmon on a biscuit -- anything -lol, can go on a biscuit as good as these in the south - and it's great! i've always had great service - the price is right, and the flavor is definately "big city" with a refreshing small town feel. one of athens best!

great atmosphere. (taken from blog)...the bakery offers a variety of baked goods ranging from cakes, cookies, croissants, your basic baguettes and everything in between. theirfrenchbread must be popular because they were all out when i tried to get one. perhaps next time. staff is friendly and helpful in choosing your food.

after ordering, you pick up a numbered pole much like a bbq restaurant and choose your own seats. while the seats inside looked cozy and welcoming, it was too nice of a day to pass up eating outside. a minute after seating ourselves, the food started to come out. extremely fast and quite unexpected. (however, we did notice that people who ordered after us got their foods pretty late. about 15 minutes i'd say)

the biscuits were quite large and had a good crust. it wasn't as soft as i like my biscuits to be but they weren't dry and butterless. i've had better elsewhere but my friends seemed to enjoy them. and to see them happily enjoying their breakfast on a saturday morning is all i can ask for.

i have to say, i wasn't really impressed with the omelet when it was presented. a meager, half of a strawberry placed next to a seemingly well cooked omelet. oh well, what i really care about is the taste anyways and my friends - it was cooked extremely well. the omelet wasn't dried out and a semi-circle of coagulated sponge but quite light and delicate like afrenchomelet. the inside, a mixture of tomatoes, basil, garlic, bacon and provolone that was seasoned well and combined in proper proportion. for those wondering, the garlic wasn't overpowering and it complimented the rest of the ingredients with its slight undertone.

overall, i'm pretty happy with big city bread. i like its calm, neighborhood and streetside like vibe where families and friends can enjoy their meals outside. birds happily eat the crumbs beside you, dogs await in anticipation to get fed and toddlers are running about without a care in the world. i'm hoping to get my hands on afrenchbread next time and try theirfrenchtoast with mixed berry syrup. a great, getaway from busy campus life and a new favorite for weekend breakfast. i leave big city bread as a happy man.
