belmont diner

busy place, good toast. went here for lunch on a monday, close to 1 pm, and the diner was still busy. was hoping for a booth seat, but the only 2 spots available were at the counter, right beside the kitchen.

dirty dishes still occupied one of the spots, and since there was only one wait staff, i had to stare at the dirty dishes for a few minutes.

the waitress did eventually take the dirty dishes away and cleaned the table.

i only asked for water as my drink, and since all the big water glasses were being washed, she gave me a kid sized water glass - she did say that she would replace it with a bigger glass once cleaned, but she never did.

she did give us ample time to decide and took our order quickly. i ordered the traditional breakfast (i rarely order any breakfast items, but in this case i felt like breakfast for lunch and was glad for the all day breakfast menu).

i chose 3 eggs, and at first was disappointed that they only offered rye or multigrain bread for toast (i prefer white toast). i usually like my eggs over hard. the food did take a little longer to arrive (most likely due to my over hard eggs, which does take longer to cook), but when it did the food was hot.

one thing i did notice was the cook didn't break the yolk on the eggs to achieve over hard, which is good as most places - to speed up cooking - will break the yolk. however, i noticed that the egg was slightly black (not burnt) which tells me the flat top was dirty.

for my meal, i felt the toast was the star. i picked multigrain - and i'm not a fan of multigrain - i found it good. i couldn't even tell it was multigrain at all, to me it tasted like toasted white bread, kudos !

yes, the hashbrowns tasted like the typical frozen mccain hashbrowns, but i have no complaints about them. the potatoes were hot, a little buttery taste to it, not overly salty, and overall good.

however, i was abit disappointed that the waitress didn't ask us if we wanted another helping of hashbrowns, seeing how it was unlimited.

i like the fact that when the bill is presented, instead of mints that no one ever takes/eats, double bubble chewing gum was provided !

overall, a decent dining experience.

way over priced for way bad food. the food was very 'meh' and the prices were way too high! we won't ever be going back to this place. fyi for any vegetarians out there: the potatoes are cooked in bacon grease (which i thought tasted alright) but for people that don't eat meat it's a not so pleasant surprise. i don't know if they do it intentionally but they clearly cook the food in a way that the crossover can happen. at any rate, we will continue to love and enjoy the much better place across the street (the loop)!

just a small little note: all you can eat hashbrowns!

had a quick lunch today at the belmont diner. the barnyard benny was suppose to be spicy, it was a bit on the lower side. either that or i just eat too much spice. i would say it had some extra flavours and very different from the traditional bennys. over all it was a great experience, i would try a different dish next time.

delicious. great place. like the atmosphere, great and attentive service, and the chef there was friendly and meticulously prepared each meal. i ordered the montreal smoked meat hash - it's filling and very delicious. i recommend!

whenever myself and my boyfriend would drive by we noticed it was out of the door busy, of course we didn't feel like waiting around for breakfast. eventually one day we waited and tried the food. it was well worth the wait we drive in from strathmore for the food. it is a bit of a wait so if your in a rush or impatient when waiting, this may not be the place for you. we have had eggs benedict and the montreal smoked meat hash and think its definitely better than a denny's or humptys that's for sure.

great dinner restaurant, breakfast portion were big and generous. loved the smoked meat omelette. very friendly staff. the set up is quite nice as well.

the atmosphere is great here. it's one of the few spots with a real diner feel to it in calgary. the food is good and the prices are reasonable. i had the crab benny it was nice. i asked for the hash browns to be extra crispy and they came out a bit too clumpy as they mass cook them and sometimes don't get the attention they deserve. get there early to put your name on the list it's a tiny spot!

i don't get what all the hype is about.  people make this place sound like an ancient calgarian institution, but the place was built in 2004.  food is greasy diner food, which is yumm, sometimes you need that, but it's no different than denny's or any other diner.

we came here on sunday morning to try something different. the restaurant had a really cute vibe and i was quite optimistic. had a look at the menu, and all the bennies on the menu are served on croissants - i can't stand it when restaurants do this! this is a classic dish that you shouldn't mess with - don't think you're being clever by serving it on a croissant or a piece of toast! anyways, i asked to have my order on an english muffin, and i was told they don't have any. when my benny came out, i was pretty disappointed that the hollandaise tasted like it came from a package. not what i would expect for the price. 2 entrees and 2 orange juices came to $50, which i thought was on the high side for the quality. most likely wouldn't return.

belmont diner - disappointed. my wife and i decided to try out the belmont diner for the first time this morning and eventually left without making it inside. when we arrived the sign in sheet had only 2 groups of 3 ahead of us. we sat outside and waited. i do realize the restaurant was busy and being a small size that we would have to wait a bit. more and more people arrived and added their names to the sign in sheet. we sat outside (windy and cool) for over 30 minutes. a group of 5 who had arrived after we had been waiting all this time were called in ahead of everyone else that was patiently waiting their turn in line. no one likes to stand in line and have someone jump the queue but this is what you did to all your customers waiting in line outside. i went inside and checked the sign in sheet and the group that was called in ahead of everyone was 2nd from the bottom. i realize that as a business you stand to make more money from a table of 5 than from a table for 2. i can't speak for the other people that were outside waiting with us but the fact that this happened must mean the owner knows and accepts this as a way of doing business. the only recourse that we, as consumers have, is to take our business elsewhere, permanently, which we did. i wasn't angry, just very disappointed. again, we are only 2 people, but if you do it to enough potential customers i seriously question your long term commitment to your business.

neighbourhood gem! there is a reason it's so busy for breakfast - it's very good. it'd be rated a 5 if the service was as good as the food.

came here for breakfast with some friends a few weeks ago. we left our name on the sheet and were seated when we got back. the wait staff checked in on us often. the menu has a good selection and we all liked our choices (i got the chuck norris, husband got the benedict, and friends got pancakes and waffles). would come back here.

nice place in marda loop. decent for breakfast food and prices and portions average. taste is good but not a fan of the hash. eggs bennies are good here
