with so many great brunch places in calgary, it's important to know each restaurant's strengths. for belmont, it's: the location, the diner feel, the buttery hashbrowns, and generous portions of montreal smoked meat.

i can't believe they are adding 15% gratuity on take out orders on the weekends. the reason is that they are busy on the weekends. maybe i should just work their shifts too. the food is ok but i'm never going there again because of the shit service.
i guess belmont employees expect a tip whether they provided a service or not.

located on 33 avenue sw, as ‘neighnborhoody’ a spot as any in alberta, belmont diner has been charming locals since the year 2000, though much of the décor and charm date back almost ninety years prior.

temporary closed by a fire in 2013, but since reopened and greeting regulars as well as new faces from 7a-3p on weekdays, and until four o’clock on the weekend, those hoping to experience the family-run space without a wait are encouraged to arrive early, 7:25 on a cold sunday finding just a dozen patrons present, four local police officers enjoying big plates of eggs, toast and meat just a few feet from my counter seating.

staffed by just two so early, a young female server in a tuque assisting the grill man in an open kitchen, it was with conversation about the restaurant and local area that time was passed after selecting two plates, the menu a laminated two-side job with a focus on diner staples and the occasional clever idea here or there.

doing diligence in reviewing the menu prior to arrival, the clever “pancake art” undeniably a draw, it was with deference to the kitchen that an oblong shaped disc of golden buttermilk batter studded with blueberries was presented, the idea immediately identifiable as r2-d2 and just as quickly devoured with a light smear of chilled butter plus pure maple syrup added to taste.

given the option of ham or smoked meat for the griddled monte cristo, unfortunately no deep-frying to be found, it was just as the pancake was nearing completion that the sandwich stacked with cheddar and a chicken breast was served, the flavors good on their own and even better with seeded raspberry jam from kraft, though the cubed potatoes were unfortunately undercooked and thus left on the plate with stomach capacity saved for the day’s additional dining stops.

great reviews and great place unless you order the belgian waffles.

as we sit at the bar table we watch the belgian waffles come frozen out of a box which we could have bought ourselves and made in a toaster at home.

i love greasy spoon places for breakfast but the ones i've been can make waffles from scratch.

disappointing.

best pancakes in the city! their a little pricey at $4 a piece but they come with real maple syrup and whipped butter. it's gets busy quick so i'd recommend going early. but so worth the trip to try them out.

i went to belmont diner with my mother and my 3 year old son. what a disappointment. there were no kids menus. the food was way over priced for the quality. the hash browns were completely mushy. the music was so loud i couldn't even hear my mother speaking to me. our server was really sweet though so i will give the service a better review than anything else. will not be going back.

i went to try belmont diner yesterday after a friend had recommended it and i loved it! i loved that it was open kitchen and that they served double bubble gum at the end. so classic! service was great - not too pushy but always refilled waters and asked how the first bite was. i had the veggie eggs benedict and it was amazing!! my colleague had the authentic montreal smoked bacon eggs benedict and it was also amazing! their hollandaise sauce was delicious. and i loved their take on hashbrowns!! portions were totally worth it. overall just a great experience! will definitely be back!

you'll wait for a seat but you'll enjoy your meal. strong coffee, good atmosphere, tasty food and bubblegum at the end!
i had the montreal smoked meat hash which we were told was quite popular. it was a good portion and delicious, with the mix of smoked meat, garlic mushrooms, onions, hashbrowns and banana peppers for some kick. eggs on top, toast on the side, and a full belly as a result.
it is small, it gets busy, you may feel cramped, but you'll enjoy it. plus there's free parking around the back and on the side streets. give it a go!

first of all the wait times are terrible. i understand that it is a small place but at least give an estimate of how long it will be and don't force people to stand outside in the freezing cold.
the service was mediocre too. our waitress spilled our drinks all over the tae twice and never came back to clean it up both times. on top of that the hot chocolates we ordered were all cold. there was also a dairy allergy in our party and this persons food still came out with cheese all over it.
overall a terrible experience and i will not be back.

so dissapointing!
first time coming here as we just moved from victoria and we're searching for a great breakfast place on our anniversary .
my husband and i were literally the only customers in the restaurant. when i walked in the staff didn't say a word. they all just looked at me, i said "for two?" a man, i assume was the manager (although hard to tell, as he was sitting at the bar playing on his phone) pointed to a table, again, without a word.
eventually, the waitress put her phone down, after showing the rest of the staff pictures of a dog she wanted to buy, she came over to the table took our order and left. she brought over my coffee and two glasses of water that tasted as if it were scooped directly out of the river.
coming from bc we are absolutely appalled at the quality of the drinking water here in calgary, and i would assume if you owned a restaurant here you would at least filter the water that you give to your customers.
after we ordered, a different waitress came over to take our order, which we explained had already been taken. in a restaurant that small, with no other customers, how could you not notice that we had ordered.
the food was brought out by the cook because the other two waitresses were nowhere to be found and the food was going cold sitting waiting for them to come back. the food was the only positive part of the experience. although incredibly overpriced.
i put my empty coffee cup at the edge of the table for a refill but never got one, probably due to the fact that we were completely ignored after our order was taken. no quality check and no bill. after we finished eating we waited for at least 5 minutes but no one came back. so i left my husband to find someone to pay. needless to say, this was the first time in my life we didn't tip.
we will never come back. it was the worst service i have ever received.
fyi, my husband and i have been in the restaurant industry for over 10 years.

deeelish!!! this is the quintessential breakfast diner. it has been awhile since i immersed myself in the breakfasty-goodness of the belmont, if for only the reason that i don't line up for food and that's the only way you're getting into the belmont in a weekend. we went monday and it was still jammed with patrons looking to get their bennies on. we had both the bfast burrito (double serving) and the classic bfast with bacon. this was a lot of food and we packed up what we couldn't finish and enjoyed it later that day. the food didn't disappoint. the hash browns come uniquely prepared ain't mash-style. the toast well buttered so be forewarned. the eggs perfect to-order.. the coffee came piping hot and was readily refilled without prompting and pleasant repartee. both of our servers were great. definitely my weekday bfast splurge spot!

had heard great things about this place that always looked so busy on the weekend. finally got the chance to go for brunch and have to admit i was underwhelmed. the bf and i ordered the breakfast burrito and the scramble (cannot remember the exact name of the dish). food was perfectly fine but was quite ordinary so i don't understand the hype. perhaps i went in with too great expectations. would still recommend but wouldn't say it is necessarily worth the long waiting times. ambiance was very great and staff mixed (had one server that was quite friendly but the other couldn't seem to care less)
