basil with a twist,a catchy name which intrigued me because i do expect the ' unexpected ' when it comes to my food.
i had visited thisrestaurantwhen they had just opened and did like the food though could not experiment much because i was with a large group .
so the opportunity presented itself ,last week and i certainly wanted to enjoy a splendid meal with all the promised' twists'.
i let the affable owner bogdan take control of my meal and just sat back to enjoy what would be one of the most memorable meals i've eaten in recent times.
started off with the prettily presented roasted pumpkin soup ,it was decorated with pesto and coconut cream swirls on the top.
the sweetness of the pumpkin came through beautifully and the contrast of the pesto added to the rich flavour of it.
the flat 'breadstick' baked with herbs provided a good crunch element to it.
next was the progression of bruschetta, from the simple tomato & cheese, smoked salmon mousse, smoked chicken with onion jam ,creamy feta topping to the baked chicken crostini, they were a treat to the eyes as well as the taste buds.
next came the exotic balkan starters kiflice ( bite sized baked ,mini rolls) with olive tapenade and umebes( balkan cheese spread) filling which was a first time tasting for me.
bujurdi- a greek cheese based baked dish which was also off the menu.
herb & garlic tossed prawns was a simple dish but the natural sweetness of the prawns was accentuated and the accompanying remoulade dip was excellent .
we did try some excellent mini philly cheesesteak subs which were accompanied by baby potato crisps.
the last of the long list of starters was the duo of yakitori skewers ,tender chicken and leeks with the origin mirin reduction and the twist- addition of chipotle which gave a kick to the second one.
the main course i had was the chicken saltimbocca which was breast of chicken topped with prosciutto and finished off with a white wine and sage sauce- utter perfection, the contrast between the chicken and the saltiness and crispness of the prosciutto was a treat for the senses.
the accompanying silky potato mash was literally that silky and smooth with a nice buttery taste.
i was literally stuffed at this point but greedy me couldn't resist trying some of their signature dishes- bogdan's family recipe- date and walnut cake was topped with caramel & blueberry sauce and was delicious.
the chocolate mousse was topped with white chocolate ,berry sauce and toasted almonds.
baklava icecream was a twist with the traditional middle eastern pastry incorporated successfully into an ice cream.
it was a splendid ,progression of dishes all pleasing the 5 senses.
it certainly pays homage to basil with a twist's culinary identity of modern european cuisine ,using the freshest possible ,seasonal produce.
