i have been a lover of asian food since the first time i shoved my pudgy little fist full of fried rice into my mouth at a local chinese restaurant at the early age of about two. since then, i’ve scored a pretty high “been there” percentage at most of the take-out and sit-down chinese joints in and around columbus. but in recent years, i’ve broadened my horizons by adding other asian cuisines, like filipino and thai food, to my rotation, and i enjoy discovering new dishes all the time. lucky for me, the house we moved to this past spring is located just around the corner from one of the most popular, and most authentic, thai restaurants in town – bangkok grocery & restaurant. the exterior of the building is fairly deceptive – because the restaurant is combined with an asian grocery market, you wouldn’t expect the seating area to be very large. the dining room, however, seats roughly 30-40 patrons and maximizes every inch of space without being cramped. now, honestly, theplacejust kin

very good thai. first off, this is a "hole in the wall" kind ofplacein an undesirable part of columbus. that being said, theplacewas packed on a rainy tuesday afternoon. i was very impressed with their lunch crowd.

my server was nice and prompt. the food took a little longer than normal, but probably because they were so busy. no big deal. as far as the food went, i think i had the pad prick dish with chicken. i asked for extra spicy, and it sure was. just like i like it. so spicy i almost cant stand it, but just enough where i can still enjoy and taste the food. the dish had more chicken than i have ever had in any chinese, thai, etc dish in my life. i was very impressed with the portion, although i would have liked some more veggies to even out the chicken. the biggest downfall was that the chicken was a little dry.

i would definitely give thsiplaceanother try, and you should too.

oh, and dont go on mondays. they are closed. i made that mistake once...

best thai ever!. my friend introduced me to thisplaceand ever since i've been hooked. the food is great (try the baby springs rolls w/ the mango-chili sauce & the tom yum gai!) and the staff is wonderful. we've gone there so much that they know what we want by heart, haha. it is a super small, hole-in-the-wall type of place, but i love it.

ahh, my hidden gem. i've been going to this restaurant since the early 90s. word of mouth brought me there as it was a true hidden gem. the word has since gotten out and it is aplacefor thai/laotian, and hipsters alike. just off rt 33 on refugee road, the building is very non-descript and inside it is very homey thai (or should i say laotian since a dependable source of mine says that the family is actually laotian). service is very informal, so don't be in a hurry. relax for god's sake. the menu is filled with specialties (love the mussels), noodle dishes - yes the pad thai is excellent (challenge yourself and try something new), soups, thai salads, and exotic deserts you will find nowhere else. my usuals are the mussels, pad prik nor mai, and yen ta pho/soup. i've never found yena pho at any other thai restaurant. it is wonderful. the broth is sweet and addictive. it has wide rice noodles topped with seafood including my favorite fish balls and fried tofu (it could be another type of fish, but i'm pretty sure it's tofu fried till bread-like). i've brought many friends there and have sucessfully converted my young nephews into loving the food here. oh, and did i emphasize that the soup broth is fantastic? this is a great family restaurant. the food is excellent for the price - you're supporting local too. don't forget to visit the grocery store next door. i love the kitchen cooking trinkets. i always try something i never had before - a challenge to expand my taste experiences to the fullest.

bangkok is like bangkok. been to plenty of thai restaurants in ca and thailand and thisplaceis legit. taste like some of the best thai meals i had in thailand. too bad we live in the opposite side of town or i would go here once a week. keep in mind they have funny hours, so go there early.

thai food minus airfare. i had ordered the pad thai (chicken, spicy) for lunch and i'm very pleased that it wasn't soggy or too greasy. the spicy was a bit tame like for wussy americans so next time i will try the thai hot spicy to see how it compare to my past trip in thailand. you won't daeoh restaurants decor here. thisplaceis about food and bear efficiency in resemblance to the small family owned chinese restaurants. if you want to relax, good ambient, and classy service, look elsewhere. thisplaceisn't a coffeehouse. come with your hunger pang and get full.

bestplacefor pho in columbus!. seriously the bestplacefor pho in columbus. my boyfriend and i go here often and always get the noodle "soup" which is actually pho bo.

it's so fresh! the broth is always so flavorful and there is tons of meat and tendons and yummy bits in it. they never skimp on it like other restaurants in columbus that serve pho do. it's the amount you'd give yourself if you were making it at home!

we usually get the baby spring rolls as an appetizer. they are always fresh and hot.

the service is always prompt and friendly, but not annoyingly so.

i'd say, if you are looking for aplacethat has a trendy atmosphere, don't go here. thisplacehas apparently been in the same location for forever and is family owned.

go to haiku or something if you want a [stuffy out of date trendy kind of]placeto be seen at (with mediocre food blah!).

go to bangkok if you want to feel comfy and have really great food that will fill you up and not take all of your money.

authentic thai. i have lost count of the number of times that i have eaten here. theplaceis not fancy. . .seriously not fancy! the food is the closest that you will get to real thai food. there is a grocery store right next door owned by the same family. this is the pad thai that i think of when i compare everyone else. they have these noodle soups that are a meal. if you tell them that you want it thai hot, you better have a fire extinguisher handy. reasonable prices and they also offer home made take home deserts that you will not find elsewhere.
