backwatersrestaurantis a lovely authentic keralarestaurantthat serves palm toddy imported from sri lanka. also, a mix and match of both kerala cuisines and customized recipes by executive chef shajith.
ms athila (i hope i got her name right) explaining each dish served to us.
chef shajith recommended an excellent dish of the day, chicken marinated with spices, wrapped in banana leaf and foil and layered with clay and baked in the oven. as well as the fish and prawns cooked in the banana leaf were awesome. chef shajith makes it a point to visit every table at therestaurantand ensure that the dishes served are per your expectations.

if you plan to visit backwaters restaurant, i would recommend you reserve a table before you go. if you do a spot check-in, you may have to wait quite a bit cause the yummy food and drinks will not let one leave therestauranttoo early. i have been in this situation couple of times, but it's worth the waiting.
chef shajith also does his best to accommodate you without reservation that within his capacity.
we understand that backwaters have to maintain a certain number of occupancies in the restaurants due to the current pandemic situation, which we respect, considering our safety.
kuddos to chef shajith and his team at backwaters restaurant.

it’s the second time
i visited pearl - backwaters
everytime therestaurantdelights me with different kinds of authentic kerala food .
this time when i went , i ordered the seafood platter and chicken nadan curry
seafood platter ... the portion was sufficient for 4...5 people ... it was done in kerala style ...included ...king fish ,prawns, crab, squid and natholi..it comes with valayappam, porotta, ghee rice ,salad and chammandi....al the seafood items tasted so fresh ..very well marinated and well cooked ...one should never try to miss the seafood platter ...highly recommended!!
then we also got one nadan chicken curry
which was also a huge portion
presentation brought nostalgic memories of days in kerala ...
i also took chicken mulakuidichathu to home ...it was like a dessert after meal
it had the exact amount of spices n tasted really good 😌
should try back waters at pearl 👍🏻

we didn't stay there but booked the lunch at backwatersrestaurantin the property. food was good but the lady at the reception was too rude even though we had a reservation. the attitude of the lady at the reservation was as if she was not interested to have customers in the restaurant.
secondly in the bill in addition to vat and tourism charges there was another charges for backwater service fee.... this was absurd!!

we reached there around 2.30pm on a working day and there were just 2 other occupied tables. we requested outdoor seating and they promptly complied. i love outdoorrestaurantseating and this was as good as it could get in that place. it was close to the pool (but separate) and with a sea view as well. it was well shaded at this time too.

we ordered their highly recommended paalkappa that comes with king fish curry in a banana leaf and it was too good- squishy yet not a paste. had the natholi fry for starter and it was crisp yet soft on the inside. their parottas and thrissur fish curry with mango were also very good. dessert was tender coconut pudding. although the pudding was tasty, the taste of the dressing was overpowering and partly ruined it. and then we made the mistake of ordering a 'nadan' chai. silly me, to even consider ordering chai in a bar. it was hopeless.

overall, great ambience, good food and very friendly service. we were served by liji and she was exceptional. made suggestions about the dishes and timed the dishes delivery also very well. considering that we were seated outside and in a cool, gentle breeze, bad timing of food delivery would have ruined the experience.

annoyances were the occasional flies, considering that we were seated outside, and also the 3-4 stray cats staring at us. ...and "no, i don't hate cats but don't like them begging either".

would definitely go there again if possible on a working day, as i heard that the quality of service suffers on the weekend due to the crowds.

a true hidden gem in the north emirate of uaq. thisrestaurantdoes not only have a great ambience but also fairly priced and great food. we ordered away a lot of dishes from which the spicy squid fry was to die for, the kallummakai (mussel) dish was just superb, and the prawn mulakittarichu was finger licking good.
if you are looking out for a good kerala style dining experience with family outside dubai this is just the ultimate choice.
must visit and looking forward to go back soon.

worst experience ever. this is going to be a rant but i would strongly suggest reading before heading out to thisrestaurantif you value your time. avoid therestaurantat all cost if you believe eating out with family is supposed to be a pleasant experience. we had a confirmed booking. however, after reaching there we were informed by the staff that the booking has not been registered. never seen such lack of co-ordination among staff. the staff had no clue or idea about how to handle the situation. we were made to wait for more than 40 minutes after being told that the table would be made available within 10 minutes. we decided to wait since we had travelled a long distance to dine there. after waiting for 40 minutes we had to follow up with the staff. by now we should have learned that the staff does not care and it is up to us to keep following up. this went on for close to an hour. finally after losing our patience and ending up with headaches we followed up again for the last time. finally the stars smiled on us and we were escorted inside for table. but lo and behold, remember the staff has no clue. we were escorted to a table of 4 in spite of stating multiple times in the past hour that we have a booking for 8 people. finally frustrated, we left therestaurantwithout any food and the worst stressful experience ever.

the long list of negetive reviews made me hesitant to book this place but we decided to experience this place by ourselves. we booked the table 2 weeks in advance and gave the full order, what we are going to eat, at least 3 days prior and made sure we reached therestaurantat least 15 mins prior our booking time. we got our tables as soon as we reached and our full order was ready within 5 mins.
now on to the food, quality and quantity is amazing. items are fresh, clean and well presented. must try items are paal kappa, wayanadan chutta kozhi, fish thala curry. not so great items are clay chicken and chicken nirachathu, both lacked masala and spiciness but the ghee rice along with these chicken combo is just out of this world :)
we were a group of 4 families and the staff did an amazing job to cater all our needs, a special thanks to ms aamy who supervised and managed our table that day.
definitely needs to revisit the place very soon as their menu is vast and needs to try them all soon 👍👍👍

service - even after booking the table 3 days in advance they couldn't get my preference right. i had specifically mentioned i needed outdoor seating. there was lot of discussions just before we got a seat. i called them in advance just because we were a team of 11 pax. we drove all the way from dxb to uaq to celebrate an occasion and was highly disappointed with the service and the food.
we tried a lot of their dishes and wasn't satisfied with any of the dishes. thisrestaurantwas recommended for their claypot chicken, sharjah shake, prawns mulakitta vatticha curry. claypot chicken was tasteless. no flavour at all. it was just chicken boiled.
sharjah shake - the chef says there is no banana so they couldn't make the order. i asked for their prawns curry and they heard prawns fry. the prawns was not good too.
we ordered beef ( was avg i) parotta, appam ( bad - please don't order it). meen thala curry ( avg), chicken 65( was good) mango lassi ( avg) , tender coconut shake ( horrible) and came with complimentary payasam - that was also disappointing!!
ambience was the only highlight.
if you want to have a drink and sit in the beach view you can visit this place. else please avoid!!

this is not related to food or ambience. this is to let all foodies know that you have to reserve table on fridays/saturdays if you wanna go there. its so bad of therestaurantfor not mentioning it either in google or in zomato. also they will not show any courtesy to see any possibility to get a table if we are ready to wait for sometime. ofcourse we all know its corona time, but you can have some courtesy to talk and check the possibilities as the rule of entry through only reservation is not published anywhere.

we were told they do not have table available for us as they are fully reserved way beyond dinner infact till 1 am ( we had gone for lunch by the way ).
we had a talk with the manager and they gave us a table finally , to our surprise many tables were free in the dining area , don’t know what stopped them from letting us in .

the staffs were unappealing and weren’t pleasant at all, seems they were working out of compulsion.

the food was received an hour after the orders were taking , ofcourse cold as ice .
even a drought of beer which was placed at the time we got there was delayed for 20 mins , just coz the waiter’s were busy and inattentive.

overall experience : pls don’t waste your time driving all the way far to have an experience in thisrestaurantas there are plenty of restaurants in dubai and sharjah which was far more food quality and service than backwaters .

its on our list to be our "go to"restaurantanytime we want an kerala meal whilst in uae .
our best ever rating for an indian restaurant.

missing kerala toddy? no issues. now you just need to travel to umm al quawain to get a drink.

backwatersrestaurantin pearl beach hotel is the answer to all our prayers for the exotic dishes, like pallu kappa and panam kallu, that are only available back home.

the place also serves a good variety of seafood and has a view looking out to the ocean.

very romantic❤️

so let’s go umm al quawain!
