beef coconut fry was dry border line burned and extremely over priced at 35dhs for a portion that is usually available elsewhere at 20dhs max. biriyani hadchickenwith skin on, completely unheard of in any part of kerala. fish chatti cury was salty and tasted of burned spices. porota was good.chickenchatti cury was good. staff do not seem to be familiar with kerala cusine.

dropped in for a quick lunch on a weekday. based on the reviews on zomato... ordered the kuluki sarbats, paal kappa, chickencurry with porotta, karimeen fry and chickenbiriyani.
all were just average food as per my taste... karimeen was not that great.
the paal kappa was the only thing that we all liked.
neatness and ambiance is good.

on our way to backwaters, i was asked if the food was good, would i go back. i was absolutely certain when i said "no, no way... i am not driving 130kms to eat food, no matter how good the food!".  but when the first morsel of paal kappa hit my tongue i started plotting an excuse to come back!

if i were to say the food was excellent that would be an understatement. we started with a masala grilled prawn followed immediately by wayanadu tribal chicken. the prawn was fresh, you could literally feel it in the crunch. the tribalchickenwas unlike anything i have had in the recent past.

the wait for the main course was on, that was when paal kappa (tapioca with fish) made its appearance. boy... that was one awesome dish. apparently, this was something the executive chef's grandmother used to make when the kids in the house would scream for an evening snack.  while finishing this, the rest of the items, chickencurry in tender coconut, beef roast(ammachi style) and koonthal (squid) coconut masala came along with porotta and kall appam.

i loved the squid and beef. thechickencurry was not as spicy as i would have wanted it to be but then we had ordered that for the kids anyways and were told in advance it won't be spicy as it is cooked in coconut water and tender coconut.

what took the cake was the dessert we ordered, the tender coconut pudding was as expected but the kaipola was super duper awesome! if you don't have anything from backwaters, have kaipola, it would still be worth the drive!

the service was awesome, adhila, the lady who took care of us, was very helpful and in fact, most of the dishes were recommended by her. shajith, their executive chef was walking the floor when he recommended kaipola to us. we are ever grateful for that gesture!

i did drink but those who did were appreciative of the palm toddy as well.

backwaters restaurant is a lovely authentic kerala restaurant that serves palm toddy imported from sri lanka. also, a mix and match of both kerala cuisines and customized recipes by executive chef shajith.
ms athila (i hope i got her name right) explaining each dish served to us.
chef shajith recommended an excellent dish of the day, chickenmarinated with spices, wrapped in banana leaf and foil and layered with clay and baked in the oven. as well as the fish and prawns cooked in the banana leaf were awesome. chef shajith makes it a point to visit every table at the restaurant and ensure that the dishes served are per your expectations.

if you plan to visit backwaters restaurant, i would recommend you reserve a table before you go. if you do a spot check-in, you may have to wait quite a bit cause the yummy food and drinks will not let one leave the restaurant too early. i have been in this situation couple of times, but it's worth the waiting.
chef shajith also does his best to accommodate you without reservation that within his capacity.
we understand that backwaters have to maintain a certain number of occupancies in the restaurants due to the current pandemic situation, which we respect, considering our safety.
kuddos to chef shajith and his team at backwaters restaurant.

had our saturday lunch here, the location is good not too congested well laid out n enough light .we ordered the special prawns n tribalchickenplus the kappa .thrissur fish curry n offcourse parotha..and the highlight...toddy/kal..the food was fantastic..had the right elements n the spice was just right..kids loved it rather lapped it up .the toddy was refreshing.excellently served by nikki..hats off to her to juggle between tables..cash counter .all with a special smile ..we would have rated 5* but it's just the time taken for the food to arrive understand that's it's due to staff being stuck back home due to flight restrictions..that was the only drawback..

lucky that we had reservations for eid lunch, else the place had a waiting period of about 2 hours. food and drinks took about half an hour to slowly trickle in. but the main dishes came before the starters and sometimes the appams came but no curries.
the seafood platter was good.but the “must have” is the paalkappa- tapioca cooked in coconut milk and topped with redfish curry steamed in a banana leaf. the crab fry was spot on. the kids gulped thechicken65 & spicy tribalchickenin the blink of the eye. skip the kulukki sarbath, instead try keraleeyam as your quench thirster.

we were about 15 ppl traveled from rak to backwater restaurant. after reading some reviews about the weekend rush we got in touch with mr. sajith (restaurant manager) to make sure we have advance booking done. even we have selected some of their highlighted dishes in advance. we haven't had any hassle because have done these in advance. now comes the dishes seafood platter, claychickenand pepper fish fry were must try from our experience. due to high demand, we did miss out on the toddy. it is a must-visit again from our side.

the long list of negetive reviews made me hesitant to book this place but we decided to experience this place by ourselves. we booked the table 2 weeks in advance and gave the full order, what we are going to eat, at least 3 days prior and made sure we reached the restaurant at least 15 mins prior our booking time. we got our tables as soon as we reached and our full order was ready within 5 mins.
now on to the food, quality and quantity is amazing. items are fresh, clean and well presented. must try items are paal kappa, wayanadan chutta kozhi, fish thala curry. not so great items are claychickenandchickennirachathu, both lacked masala and spiciness but the ghee rice along with thesechickencombo is just out of this world :)
we were a group of 4 families and the staff did an amazing job to cater all our needs, a special thanks to ms aamy who supervised and managed our table that day.
definitely needs to revisit the place very soon as their menu is vast and needs to try them all soon 👍👍👍

service - even after booking the table 3 days in advance they couldn't get my preference right. i had specifically mentioned i needed outdoor seating. there was lot of discussions just before we got a seat. i called them in advance just because we were a team of 11 pax. we drove all the way from dxb to uaq to celebrate an occasion and was highly disappointed with the service and the food.
we tried a lot of their dishes and wasn't satisfied with any of the dishes. this restaurant was recommended for their claypot chicken, sharjah shake, prawns mulakitta vatticha curry. claypotchickenwas tasteless. no flavour at all. it was justchickenboiled.
sharjah shake - the chef says there is no banana so they couldn't make the order. i asked for their prawns curry and they heard prawns fry. the prawns was not good too.
we ordered beef ( was avg i) parotta, appam ( bad - please don't order it). meen thala curry ( avg),chicken65( was good) mango lassi ( avg) , tender coconut shake ( horrible) and came with complimentary payasam - that was also disappointing!!
ambience was the only highlight.
if you want to have a drink and sit in the beach view you can visit this place. else please avoid!!
