awesome food and great atmosphere, the waitress we had was great and helped out with any queries we had. if you're into cocktails you must try the vermouth or the toddy. absolutely amazing.

i got myself the breakfast combo, a well crafter egg and bacon bun with their freshly brewed latte.
i went to asadotogo which is just next to the main restaurant. it is basically your takeaway place if you are in a hurry and can’t spare time to sit in their amazing looking restaurant.
i loved the sauce put on the bun and the bacon was perfectly cooked to my liking- not too soft and not too crispy and the latte had a nice strong kick it.
the staff there was very friendly and i also loved the outer space. the seating is amazing for a cold day when the sun is out and then this combo would be the best on your to go list if you have 10mins to kill for your brekkie.

(would soon try their main restaurant hopefully too.)

🌟4/5 taste, but not worth it

nice restaurant on southbank promenade and is one of the less popular options.

we ordered the $95 5 course matador set menu and you honestly get a ridiculous amount of food. can’t imagine someone being able to consume this much. don’t order the $120 7 course set menu, the 5 course set menu already offers too much food.

the food quality is good. because we ordered the set menu we tried 9 dishes consisting of 2 entrees, 3 hors d’oeuvres, 2 salads, a main and a dessert. it’s great that you get to try a lot of things, and it definitely felt like it was more than 5 courses.

we weren’t asked how we wanted our steak cooked, so they defaulted to medium which is a bit strange. they were happily willing to replace it with the steak cooked at medium rare.

the waiter also touched our salad as we clearly saw the salad dressing leave a mark on her finger. not ideal.

they offer unlimited refills of salsa and chimichurri. the salsa is pretty good.

i would also avoid coming on public holidays as there is a 15% public holiday surcharge.

overall, the place is quite pricy and offers you a lot of food in the set menu. all the dishes tasted nice but there may be some hygiene issues.

my rating of 4/5 is primarily based on the taste of the food.

ordered the cochinillo pork which was delicious and had this charcoal flavour with beautiful pork fat flavour, pulpo en mojo verde which was like a grilled octopus with a green sauce, also delicious, papas which were these fried potatos with this mustard dressing, probably best dish out of all of them, esparragos a la parrilla which was asparagus , broccolini with nice lemon and walnut flavour, beef empanada which was standard, provoleta which was this cheese with chilli and lemon, tasted like fried cheese but was delicious, pisco which tasted like vodka and lastly sangria which was refreshing. overall, service was excellent, asked about the pisco and gave great recommendation, loved this place

being one of the san telmo group, i'd been looking forward to trying this place out. quickly seated on entry, a really helpful staff soon introduced us through the menu. his recommendations turned out to be on point.

the fugazzeta is a fermented potato focaccia, infused with olives & rosemary. it paired harmoniously with the melted provolone cheese with chilli, lemon and oregano, which suited the cool weather today. the highlight was the rainbow trout, so tender the flesh was like smooth butter, flavoursome with the zesty paprika oil. the cochinillo (pork), while tender and retained the texture we enjoy, was bathed in a sauce so salty and sharp that it utterly overpowered the taste buds. it may have been what we ordered, but everything including the asparagus side dish and morcilla black sausage was excessively oily i had an upset stomach afterwards.

the dark toned decor is punctuated by cow hides in tribute to the argentinian cuisine. the vast room gives that spacious, comfortable feeling you aren't going to be packed in like sardines. the staff were lovely, though it seemed like our waiter did the lion's share of the work in our zone while the other waiter just "looked busy".

really rude waitress. not only did she give me attitude and was very rude after picking up a takeaway order, but she also retaliated and accused me of lying. i don’t know what your deal is, but this shouldn’t be how you treat customers?

great atmosphere, but the meats left a lot to be desired. in terms of ranking, pastuso still remains on top, followed by san telmo and then maybe asado down there. waitress was a bit unsympathetic but the chef that brought the food out was much friendlier. pity cause it could really be an awesome place.

it’s been a while since i’ve felt ripped off but this was probably the worst dining experience i’ve had yet.

we had the $90 set menus and every dish was quite average considering the price, one was absolutely foul. it took 90 minutes for the main course to arrive and by that time i was starving and underfed (a small piece of toast with anchovies, half a chorizo to tie us over in that time).

i’ve had better quality argentinian food at street festivals for less than a quarter of the price and have felt more satisfied with the food at a place like grill’d.

the table next to us had a similar disappointed experience and left their sitting early. be mindful that you aren’t paying for good food here and the dining experience wasn’t anything spectacular to justify the prices.

can definitely see asado as an easy place to catch up with work colleagues. a lighter establishment than its moody san telmo cousins, asado is located on the fringes of the city in southbank.

ordered:
entree
🦪 vieira: hervey bay half shell scallop, galician butter ($9.00 each)
🌭 chorizo: spiced pork paprika sausage ($16.00)
🥕 [special] zanahorias especial: chargrilled carrots, romesco sauce, leatherwood honey, salted ricotta ($14.00)

main
🥩 ojo de bife: 350g o'connor's (vic) premium pasture fed scotch fillet ($59.00)
🥔 papas: fried russet potatoes, brava sauce, spiced salt, aoli ($13.00)

review:
the food was pretty good at asado!
i loved the scallops and its buttery sauce. it was a little plump, with its distinct sweetness that makes me smile when i think about it. a must order.
a small touch that i also liked was the crunchiness of the russet potatoes. with its crispy edges and slightly spicy hits with the brava sauce cooled by the aioli, it was the sensation of a summer desert approaching the night with every bite.

service was incredibly fun with the waiters encouraging us to try speak spanish. my attempts were off, but it was all taken with humour and a fun educational experience. the waitress was also thorough, taking the opportunity to through the menu and explain the ordering process to get us comfortable.
in terms of the atmosphere, asado is an open space with dark wooden tones. love the skin of the menu - the texture was very interesting and really was a tribute to the meats that were being served.

perhaps it was what we ordered but i found asado the least impressive of the four restaurants under the sal telmo group. the atmosphere is sound, all cow hide and wine walls and a balloon installation in the entrance, and the service friendly and attentive but on this occasion i found the carrots in the vegetables side a little undercooked and laden with huge pieces of zucchini (probably should have ordered the potatoes!). our lamb rump was also a little underwhelming which we figured we should order for variety instead of two types of steaks. extra points for atmosphere
