when you've got a man with a beautifully thick bulgarian accent greeting you and making small talk about the world cup you have an inkling of the kind of evening you're in for!
alpine is a great little spot at the top of conrad drive in blairgowrie/randburg with a butchery attached to the restaurant.
the owner is an old friend of my dads (from the german shepard dog club?) and is actively involved in the day to day runnings of the restaurant.
they boast a well balanced menu and their claim to fame is their collection of 21-day matured cuts of meat (prepared in the butchery next door).
they boast an extensive selection of wines housed in a very fancy temperature controlled fridge/room which forms one of the restaurants walls, a very nice little feature - we indulged in a bottle of wine called "the churchyard".
i enjoyed a starter of prawns (at a steak restaurant, go figure) - which was just absolutely phenomenal, with some delightful mayonnaise and sweet chilli sauce while my parents each enjoyed their own carpaccio, which was thinly sliced and look exceptionally appetising.
main meals were were healthy portions of beautifully prepared meat, between us we had, prime rib, pork chops and fillet - the cuts of meat were impeccable and their preparation was second to none!
a chocolate fondant and cappuccino to round off the evening never goes astray!

what i love about alpine though, apart from the amazing food, is the look and feel, it's a well lit cosy little restaurant and the staff are polite, well trained and all round nice guys whilst the owner (simeon) and his managers are authentic europeans with that warm homely "you must enjoy" attitude that adds to the experience.

i really would recommend this place for dinner and the butchery for your fresh cuts of meat!

conveniently located in a center with lots of parking, this is a great spot for lunch - especially business lunches. quite a broad menu but their top dishes are their steaks (being part of the alpine butchery) is a big help. their steaks are dry aged and served with a wide choice of sides and marrow bones on the side. the menu also features other meat dishes, pizza's, great salads and some bulgarian specialities. friendly staff and a fantastic wine list top off the great experience.

great service ! amazing burger , just shy of the best you can get in jo'burg , the only problem i do have with alpine is that they lack atmosphere , and the proper dry aged steak the claim to serve is eluding them too .

just to update ... alpine scores quite high on the eggs benni scale , well poached eggs , good hollandaise! ( i would have liked it a bit more lemony , but otherwise it is rich and buttery like it is supposed to be ) and the coffee is not to shabby either.☺️

i have been going to alpine almost since it has been opened. i love it! te food is absolutely delicious. fine dining but with a fair amount of food. staff and owners are friendly and very welcoming.
i suggest the pork chops meal to everyone who loves a good pork chop meal. and you get 2 side dishes, i suggest the gorgonzola cheese and broccoli. it tastes amazing.

the 2 things i could complain about alpine are that the prices are a bit high and the menu has not changed for long.

but i recommend it for a date night, family dinner night and even with friends or birthday celebrations!

excellent steak and the sides are fantastic. even the soup is good. the wine list is exceptional. although the etonian mess is lacking one ingredient the fact that they have afogato on the menu shows the quality of the place . all in all really good and somewhere i've been again and again

alpine is easily one of my favorite places to eat in the area. the menu covers all bases, as there is something for everyone; ranging from pizzas and pastas, to steaks, burgers, and fish. there is also a section specifically for bulgarian food.

i have had both the rump, and the aniseed lamb shank. both exceptional meals which blew me away(the steaks come with massive marrow bones, for those in to that sort of thing). those with a sweet tooth are also well looked after. i have tried the berry crumble, eton mess, and chocolate fondant, which were all far above my expectations.

lastly, i must mention that the wine list is something to behold. i am very fond of having wine with my meal, and most wine lists i look at end up being extremely unimpressive. alpine, however, has the best wine selection i have ever seen at a restaurant ( and fairly priced too). they stock not only the local wines, but french wine too.

i recommend alpine to anyone looking to enjoy a fantastic meal, washed down with a good wine.
