alewife

knock my socks off!!. a group of friends and i were out of town from philadelphia and came across alewife, and i'm glad we did. the place alone was fantastic, the style, the feel, it was just really cool. as we ate dinner, we were told that the building use to be a bank, it still has old vault doors and everything. as we ordered food from our very friendly server, who also was very knowledgable about all the different beers (all 140+), we had a sense that we had arrived to some kind ofbeermeeca. the food is a whole nother story, i had their 10oz smoke burger, that was just one of the best burgers i have ever had. my other friend had their chicken dish, again almost to good to be true, and my other two friends had their skirt steak and black bean burger. we were just blown away from the building, service, and the food that we wound up staying there all night instead of sticking with our plans of going to power plant live that night. i just want to say thank you to alewife and their staff, they made me look like a hero that day.

thebeerselection is decent, but don't order food here. i ordered mussels and they came out tasting rotten. i hope i don't get food poisoning from the two i ate. when i sent that back, i requested a salad instead, thinking it would be safe. 20 min later, i still didn't get it. gave up waiting and told the bartender to just give me the check for thebeeri had. if i could give negative stars, i would.

on a friday evening for dinner, my friend nicole and i were looking to grab a burger and abeerand just catch up. if you’re looking for a burger in baltimore, many are familiar with abbey burger which is constantly being written up as the best burger in baltimore. and if you want plenty of options, that’s a great spot. but when you’re craving a a great burger, and you don’t feel like building it yourself, alewife  is worth a visit. it’s also one of the many spots in baltimore that i have a city dining card for. alewife after sitting down and looking over the impressive drink menu, seriously this place is worth a visit for itsbeerlist alone. my friend and i each decided to get the burger. i got it because i know how awesome it is, she probably got it because i hyped it up all day long. the smoke burger is 11oz of beef topped with smoked gouda, gruyere, bacon, caramelized onion, and chipotle aioli on a brioche bun. and if that burger isn’t amazing enough on its own, it comes with a side of duck fat fries. this burger is so juicy and packed with delicious smoky flavors. it’s hands down my favorite burger in baltimore. the smoke burger inside the smoke burger if you’re looking for a notablebeerlist and a great burger, i’d highly recommend  alewife . alewife  is located at 21 north eutaw street ,  downtown  baltimore. know of any other places to get great  burgers  or restaurants downtown  that i need to try? let me know in the comments below! for more of my deep thoughts and witticisms, follow me on  twitter . for more great  burgers  nearby, consider 

great pre-orioles game eatery. if you are hovering around a 'mature' age and want an excellent meal and avoid the loudness, drunkenness,beerswilling & spilling, skin-show gyrating and twerping of the "strip" across from camden yard then this is the place. burgers (both bean and regular) were outstanding. the smoked tomato soup was savory without that cloying creaminess you get from many tomato soups. best bloody mary i've had in a long time and a terrific selection of draft beer. close to the 24-hour parking garage and an easy walk to camden yard. hope they keep their chef from the pre-father's day saturday....this one has the right touch. love the atmosphere on the first floor and the waiter was a nice fella. yesterday all the tumblers fell into place at alewife to provide a happy eating experience.

cocktails were disappointingly weak, though the bacon bloody byron was flavourful. the duck fat fries were out the yang, so good! the bean burger was well loved by my non-meat-eating friend, and the smoke burger was well enjoyed as well. impressivebeerselection, though heavy on the ipa as is on trend.

awesomebeerselection! my top 3beerchoices were sold out but who cares? the list was so long and diverse. i had the famous burger with duck fat fries. decadent although the fries were limp and soggy. overall still a great experience.

amazing food and a great old bank put to good use! greatbeerselection as well!

asian meatballs were weird, mussels were okay, but thebeerselection made up for all of this.

after that we walked around town a bit and stopped for a pint and a snack at alewife. this place had a greatbeerselection, and the bartender was really helpful in picking out what to get. the truffle fries turned out to be a fantastic lil' snack. they had this spicy dipping sauce that rounded things out perfectly.

great place, great staff. the smoke burger is excellent and so is theirbeerlist. the staff is great and knowledgeable about the food and drink list. i always trust them for a recommendation!

burger heaven. stopped in for a few pints and some dinner with a few buddies. excellentbeermenu, great atmosphere, awesome food. we split the crab devilled egg appetizer and we all got smoke burgers. the eggs were solid; the burger is in strong contention for best of baltimore. it seems like it will be a bit overwhelming on paper, but this badboy is assembled with a deft hand. duck fat fries, eh, cool and all, but the burger… this is the burger.

ate there last night for the first time. we were all happy with our choices and will certainly go again! the decor is dark, with lots of cool art and great high ceilings. a decent size space soalthough there were at least 50-70 people it didn't feel crowded. calamari app was good. friend hadbeern cheese soup, said it was really good. the smoke burger was delicious according to my friend. the 2 other meat eaters had the skirt steak and bbq shrimp n grits, all great too. i had the catfish tacos, very good too. our server joe was friendly and helpful withbeerand food recommendations. def would recommend to others!

slower than slow!. my boyfriend and i went on a friday evening so we figured things may be a little slow which we were okay with since they have an excellentbeermenu. what we weren't expecting though, was to wait 90 minutes for the famous smoke burger! the menu did specify that it would take longer than your usual burger, but i didn't realize that meant the length of a movie. our waiter only stopped by once to let us know that our food would be "right up"... and that was 45 minutes before it actually made it to the table. needless to say, the burger was delicious but because of the wait and lack of customer service we shan't ever be returning.

good and not so good.. i'd have to say the building itself is beautiful. thebeerselection is endless. i had the burger with duck fat fries, which was cooked perfectly. fries seasoned nicely with sea salt and rosemary. our bartender talked to us like we were clueless, explaining everything ad nauseum. explained gastropub, erm if you hadn't noticed my husband is british, lol. he was a bit pushy. he later asked us if we wanted a shot. i asked if it was a friendly gesture, or are we paying for it. he started setting up the whole absinthe sugar cube bit and handed it to my husband. sure enough a $10 shot of absinthe is on the bill. overall we enjoyed the food and beer, would give it another try. i'll try sitting at a table next time.

greatbeerselection. food: meh.. definitely one of the best draughtbeerselections in town. our server was able to talk to us about the ones we wanted to know more about. the noise was overwhelming. at points my companion and i simply stopped talking because we couldn't hear each other across the table. it was a friday around 7. busy time but surprisingly noisy. the food was so-so. the duck fat fries were over-seasoned and limp (in a bad way). the burger had way too much going on and had way too strong of a charcoal taste. the shrimp and grits had a decent amount of shrimp and the grits had a good taste but i couldn't eat about 30% of the grits because of the big lumps. disappointing.
