great atmosphere, vibrant and super tasty!

777 is a great place, perfect for a dinner with colleagues! the margueritas were verygoodand all the food the came to the table was fantastic. we ended up getting a tasting menu, so it was like a feast. the colors and flavors just hit the spot.goodjob on the desserts as well, loved the bread and butter pudding.

i would give it a 4.5, but i found it a little bit too pricey, though it was great!

a little bit on the expensive side for the portions, but the nachos were massive and absolutely delicious. i had the shrimp tacos and they were fantastic. really tasty and crunchy. the staff are top notch as well, id almost preference a seat at the bar because of how much of a laugh the barman was. reallygoodfood and always a great atmosphere because the place is always packed.

you can't book this joint, you turn up and hope there's a place at the bar or at one of the ramshackle tables around the room. more often than not there isn't...but you've come tantalisingly close, you make it through the heavy black curtain that hangs inside the joint's front door right right onto the main floor were a dream of a waitress stops you dead in your tracks with her crimson smile and immediately your head fills the smell fresh lime and the sweet tequila which seems to be on a constant flow topping off row after row of mexican margaritas that span the length of the long dark bar. it's dimly lit, its noisy, its packed, its alive, its full of the same people as you... hunters of killer mexican food, the best in the country.....you've come to the right place...it's friggin dam near perfect!

you hold your breath as the waitress scans the room looking for any available space and as she does a satisfied couple rise to leave from the diner style stools at the far end of the long margarita heavy bar....right by the kitchen........guess what...your in. she turns her crimson smile back to you and nods her head toward the best seats in the house...buckle up...... welcome to 777.....the best restaurant in dublin.

ok - so i have love affair with this joint..i make no apologies! 777 serves insanelygoodmexican food in an atmosphere akin to being inside a working pinball machine. if you really like social dinning this is it at its best - the menu is extensive and brilliant it captures everything amazing about mexican food!!

i really love this place. great music and atmosphere, cosy andgoodservice. food is mexican but not your usual tex mex kinda stuff. definitely more authentic and delicious. the tastiest dishes were most definitely the tuna tostados and crab tostados. had beef and mushroom tacos which were nice but a bit overwhelmed by the sauce it was served with. papas fritas were so delicious and garlicky. the corn on the cob was so tasty too, although a little on the cold side. lovely cocktails too, which although pricey are a nice treat. will definitely be back.

these last weeks we’ve been incredibly lucky with the weather. at least i’be been able to go out to the street without a coat and with ballerinas, something i missed so much.goodweather in dublin means also crowed streets and places in the city center but hey, everybody is in agoodmood and that brings an incredible atmosphere to the city.

last sunday a verygoodfriend called me to go with him and some others to have some cocktails in 777, the mexican restaurant down george street. first and last time i was there i was a bit sick and i founded the place pretentious, overpriced and everything but mexican. i have to say i was half wrong.

sundays in this place are totally worthy: selected dishes and cocktails cost 7.77 euro, the atmosphere is hip and cool, music is just amazing and the food… well i have personal dislike for spicy stuff but other than that, kudos for the 777’s owner who came up with this idea.

it was 4pm and we started with a round of “la cura”. oysters in a shot glass with tequila and spicy red sauce. “la cura” could be translated as the cure, which as far as i know, describes this dish to the perfection. maybe because it makes all your stomach and head jump, but i really find it original and worthy for the experience, not that much for the taste.

oyster tequila shots followed by chilaquiles, daiquiris and bloody mary’s putted the perfect end to a spring weekend in dublin that leads the willing of summer, sun and beach to all of us. hopefully soon i will be writing from some lost land on the other side of the world.

bon apetite!

grade: 7.5/10
price: €€ (only on sundays)

those of you who aren’t familiar with it may have actually walked past 777 without even noticing it. situated on george’s street, it’s quite unidentifiable until you see the small black sign sticking out of the wall above you. then you’ve got to push through the black door and through the curtain before entering the restaurant.

luckily we were early enough and got a seat at the bar, where they sit most parties of 2. i know this can be off putting for some but i love bar seating to be honest. granted, i wouldn’t fancy it for a really special romantic night out but in a place like 777 where it’s small and has a casual laid back vibe i really enjoy sitting at the bar just as much as getting a table.as bar sitting goes, this is a really great bar.

a long bar with white tiled walls with an array of bottled drinks… some of the wall art may not be to everyone’s taste but overall it fits in with the rest of the restaurant. i think the owners (also owners of dillingers (review here ) and the butcher’s grill) have really found a vibe that people enjoy, a more relaxed and casual approach to dining.

we plonked ourselves down and started with a few drinks. it’s an absolute sin to go here and not try the margaritas, they are the best i’ve ever tasted. we had one of the frozen margaritas (€10) and one of the margarita especial (€12)

777’s food is mexican but not your typical fajitas and enchiladas style of mexican. the starters / small dishes section of the menu has quite a big choice of tostadas & taquitos along with oysters, squid, tortilla soup, pork flank and dublin bay prawn ceviche just some of the choices. i always say i’ll try something different but the chorizo taquitos (€9) reel me in every time. they are utterly amazing – 3 small wraps with such soft tender meat and agoodfiery kick to them. apologies for the rubbish photo – i was in such a rush to start eating that i forgot to take a pic when they came out!

choice of mains isn’t as vast but still has agoodselection. there’s the market fish, jerk chicken, pork hock, lamb rump, ribs and beef to name a few. e went for the asada de carne – grilled flank steak, artichoke & broad bean gremolata (€26) and i chose the pollo pollito – mexican jerk 1/2 chicken, cheese & jalapeno cornbread with a citrus slaw (€20). we also got a side of elotes – mexican style sweetcorn (€6). e is a “well done” beef man and on ordering he requested this. i had a little snigger to myself when the waitress informed him that no, he couldn’t have it well done, it was cooked medium – end of  :-)

for once in my life i ordered the better dish…. i’m usually left drooling over e’s choice but on this occasion the roles reversed. his beef wasgood…..

…but my chicken was absolutely amazing. huge portion sizes and the softest

i wasn’t a massive fan of the cheese and jalapeno cornbread (e ate that instead) but the side of corn doused in cheese more than made up for it.we ate every last bit of food between us and handed back empty plates save for the chicken bones.

there was physically no more room in our tums for dessert but we did manage another drink before our allocated 2 hour time slot was up and we had to scarper. if it weren’t for that i think we would have happily sat there for another few hours enjoying the fabulous margaritas!

the bill came in at €105 for one starter, two mains, one side and four cocktails.

i really can’t fault the food in this place. i’ve been numerous times now and never had a bad meal, in fact i’ve eaten the best meat i’ve ever tasted here on my past 2 visits. it definitely isn’t the cheapest restaurant on the block but i have no problem paying for reallygoodfood. that coupled with the friendly and laid back atmosphere in 777 keeps me wanting to go back.

i love this place, atmosphere is next to done. from the outside it doesn’t look much but when you go inside the music isgoodand the staff are cool. small so i would advise booking ahead but very nice mexican. they don’t really have that many options for vegetarians but everyone at my table loved their food. you can get a boars head which isn’t up my street but people seem to love the novelty of that.  i wasn’t that upset about the food though because their cocktails are amazing. i’ve also been to 777 on sundays where they have a special deal for €7.77 which is like tasters and tapas which works really well.

could have been a lot better. i don't mind spending a lot on food when it isgoodfood i'm actually getting and as much as i wanted to like 777 i left with a bad taste in my mouth. the food is far too expensive for what you are actually getting and the staff were rather rude to one of my colleagues. i thought the cocktails would be a saving grace for the evening but again too expensive and overrated. the whole experience was a let down and the cuisine incredibly uninspired, i shall not be returning in the future for such bland food, which seemed reheated.
