since the time i've come to california i.e. almost a month ago, zachary's and theirchicagostyle deep dish pizzas have been on my wishlist. finally got a chance to visit this place last saturday and all i can say is that they serve the best pizzas ever!!

regulars have been frequenting this haunt from a very long time, and while the reputation of their deep dish pizzas has always preceded them, the popularity of these only seems to grow with each subsequent year. what makes zachary’s so unique is their classicchicagosauce-over-cheese approach.

so when we finally visited zachary's, we settled into their wooden chairs in the charming interiors and quickly placed our order since we were super hungry and knew that their pizzas take around 45 minutes to be cooked. we whiled away our time sipping on some wine and beer.

and when our half-n-half pizza arrived, it was love at first sight for me. the spinach & mushroom pizza came with toppings of fresh spinach and mushroom blended with 3 cheeses and special spices and with a pizza base that was soft, fluffy and just the perfect level of crust. how can you possibly say no to that?

the other half was the mediterranean pizza which turned out to be another great choice to sink our teeth into that came with enticing toppings of red bell pepper, green olives, artichoke hearts, feta and jack cheese.

the pizza was so filling that three slices were just enough for each of us (that too because we skipped lunch :-p).

the service was quick and our server was very polite and attentive even though the place was packed.

so to cut the long story short, absolutely loved the pizzas here and will definitely be going back for more.

long live zachary's!

zachary's do a mean deep dish. so mean is it that you will invariably end up going back there the very next day like i did. i rarely do deep dishes. they require a large appetite, can go horribly wrong for most people and whilechicagoswears by it, i've had some very bad renditions in the windy city as well.

we had the classic spinach & mushroom deep dish and it was just heavenly. the tomato sauce was rich with soft tomatoes, the crust was thin but the second internal layer was nice and fluffy. and it all just came together beautifully on a plate.

my very first experience withchicagodeep dish and if this is my yardstick of measuring how good deep dish is, then zachary's has given deep dish a huge huge boost. i am in love.

large, delicious pizzas. i ordered a chicken pizza and between 3 of us, we cleaned up the pan and were left wanting for more.

zachary's is a must for anyone who wants to try some goodchicagodeep dish pizza.

back in the day before little star and patxi's, there was the original deep dish bay area pizza, zachary's. with three locations in the east bay, zachary'schicagopizza is an employee-owned company that has been serving satisfied pizza lovers since 1983.

stuffed pizza (not deep dish). yes, "stuffed pizza" is baked in a deep dish pan, but it is a little different than the traditional and more well known "deep dish" pie. stuffed pizza was born inchicagocirca 1971 by nancy's pizza (in which yours truly has delivered pies for at one time). deep dish was born circa 1945 by pizzeria uno inchicagoby rudy malnati (rudy's son also worked here and currently has his own chain of restaurants called lou malnati's).

the main difference between deep dish and stuffed pizza is that stuffed pizza is supposed to be even bigger than deep dish. they "stuff" more cheese and ingredients into a stuffed pizza and then close it up with a thin layer of dough and then ladle sauce on top of that.

most chicagoans prefer and order chicago-style thin crust pizza, which has a cracker type crust and is cut into little squares instead of pie cut (of course, there are variations). usually, the thinner, the better. i would estimate that chicagoans order about 80-85% of their pizza as thin crust. deep dish is more like a specialty-type pizza. lots of chicagoans don't like all that dough in a deep dish pie. although, since deep dish has really been catching on around the u.s. in the past 10-20 years, more chicagoans (expecially the younger population) and transplants are identifying deep dish pizza as the "chicago" pizza.

yeah, i'm a dork. i've got nothing better to do right now. wait, yes i do... i am just procrastinating.

zachary's = good grub!.chicagocan officially take a hike. you've been outdone. there's no shame in that. you're pizza is good, but zachary's is amazing. how do they do it? is it because they're 100% employee owned? is it because they sprinkle magic deliciousness into the sauce? i don't know, and more importantly, i don't care. just keep the spinach and mushroom stuffed pizza coming my way. don't like spinach and mushroom? at age six i wouldn't eat a mushroom dipped in nacho cheese, but i would down this stuff like nobody's business. this is one of those places were you probably never change your order, because it's just too good to experiment with. if the pizza itself wasn't enough to convince yourself, just take a look around the walls at the non-stop reviewers singing its praise. but more importantly, are the super-fan posters that cover the walls. i guess when you're this good, you don't need to invest in art. don't be afraid of the crowded mess inside, because zachary's will let you order your food as soon as you put in your name. and that's important, because for safety sake, when you smell that pizza floating around, piled up on bar stools next to people's tables, a riot could break out at any moment. this is the kind of place you order a large, knowing you can only stomach half, but the cold leftovers are an art unto itself. with the delicious flaky crust, toppings dancing with the cheese stuffed (most importantly) inside, and topped off with rich piles of chunky tomatoes, you'll never forgive yourself that you didn't go sooner. so grab a slice, dive in with a fork and knife, or pick it straight up if you're brave, and your belly will reach good grub euphoria before you know it.

i took a trip tochicagoand hit up two separate pizza places that were proclaimed by locals as the best. i have to say that the product was mediocre at best. perhaps the locals were wrong, or perhaps a truechicagostyle pizza is simply uninspiring. all i can say is that zachary's offers one of the best blends of flavors that could ever be placed in one's mouth. i would put that sauce on cereal if i had access to it.
