wonderful ambiance, diverse menu, tasty food, but service was lacking. given that the restaurant was about 60% full, and none of the staff (servers and sushi chefs/kitchen) appeared to be harried, it took too long for our order to be taken, drinks and appetizers to come, and for the main meal to finally arrive. and within that span, the server never checked to see if our meal was satisfactory or whether we needed more water. however, when the food finally arrived it was quite good. shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizers were flavourful and crispy, not oily/soggy/salty that often ruins tempura. the miso soup was particularly enjoyable as it avoided the typical excess saltiness often found in miso soup elsewhere. the salad came across as a bland afterthought, but was excusable given the quality sushi. i ordered the bento meal #3, which included a spicy salmon roll, salmon sashimi, dumplings, and teriyaki chicken skewers--all excellent and very satisfying. other diners in our party enjoyed what they ate, but were underwhelmed with the quantity of food--the lesson here is that unless you're ordering at least $25 worth of food, you'll probably be left wanting for more supper. not that that's unreasonable for a nicer-than-average sushi restaurant, but important to know for the uninitiated. in all, it was an ok experience that could have been better with decent service. (and don't expect anything special if you go for your birthday--many other restaurants will offer a token of appreciation for choosing to celebrate your birthday there, but not wasabi.) i'd go again to give the service a second chance, simply because the food was that good.
