let's start off with one important fact, perhaps the most important. for all that the name sounds fancy, this restaurant is *not a fine dining restaurant.* in fact, it is a homey type of house
with relatively plain interiors and simple table settings, tables arranged somewhat haphazardly and not rather charmingly. you also won't find this in a neat commercial area. be ready to drive into a simple neighborhood with agoodnumber of local youngsters hanging around the street corners.
i went here at night and perhaps missed its lazy noon charm. what i did find very special and what i will confirm is that the view of the entire metro manila is quite spectacular.
as we have established that this is not a fine dining restaurant, the "fine" prices of the dishes, particularly the entrees (p800+ to 1600 per plate) are quite surprising. perhaps, it is the low supply of swiss restaurants in the metro that serves as their justification for close to hotel-restaurant-level rates. you must also be aware to take the head waiter's advisements about serving sizes with a lump of salt. the entrees, especially coming after a starter of cheese fondue, are large and heavy enough for sharing for 2 persons of medium appetite. the head waiter was trying to convince my boyfriend and myself that the sausage platter main was onlygoodfor 1 person. i felt skeptical so we cancelled my boyfriend's entree. agoodthing, too. the sausage platter was big!!! we both ate to uncomfortable fullness and still left 1 fat sausage on the plate.
is the food good? yes. the plates come with a generous amount of sauce and side vegetables, including lovely little pickled veggies to balance out the flavors. but part of the reason for my 3-star rating is that i was disappointed by the rostï. it wasn't the crispy, tasty goodness i was expecting. it was quite bland. it was not crispy. it didn't live up to any sort of expectation. and i know because i once had a homemade rostï at my dear friend's house, made by her swiss boyfriend. it blew my mind - a revelation of potato, salt and oil. vieux chalet's rostï is not going to blow any minds.
in summary:
*not a fine dining restaurant
*much too pricey (~p2500 to 3000 for 2 persons, no dessert and no drinks)
*great view
*worth a visit so you don't have to live [unnecessarily] with your fomo
