great restaurant in groot brak right next to the train track where the originaltranskarootrain ran!
i had the most delicious chicken with basil pesto & creamy risotto with a side of soet patat and broccoli. a glass of delicious veltevreden vanilla chardie accompanied my main course. dessert was a decadent warm apple crumble and cream washed down with a delicious latte!
our waitrons were friendly and attentive!
thank you for our fantastic lunch!!! what a special place with a great wine selection

took a chance and arrived without a reservation... we were greeted by the friendliest staff and seated outside on the old platform. our waiter, john, was the epitome of friendliness and his menu knowledge was outstanding. we followed his recommendation and ordered the cream of mushroom soup and skaapstertjies for starters. one word....awesome...!! our main course arrived shortly after and we were blown away. camembert biltong and balsamic onion topped fillet grilled to perfection and slow roasted pork belly on mash with crackling - food fit for kings! as we aren't from the area, we regret not being able to visit regularly and - in hindsight - shouldn't have been surprised at all the local cars in the carpark when we arrived. well done to everyone attranskaroo- we will definitely be back!!!

fine dining in the heart of calmness.

we arrived a bit early to an empty restaurant, but 30 minutes later it was completely packed with families.
definitely a different kind of place. no menus whatsoever. everything they serve to you can be found written on the walls and something we really enjoyed is their unique wine list, or actually, their wine display.

the waiters are extremely friendly and help you with a big smile and never making you wait. giving you suggestions on what they think is the best for the evening, which really givestranskaroothat homey feel.

the food... oh so amazingly delicious and very unique to africa which is great for the tourists that make use of the garden route.

maybe a little pricey if you compare it to anything else in great brak, but this sure is a place to visit when in the area.

transkaroo gets two tasty tummies' stamp of approval.

transkaroo bring haar padkos! is afrikaans for ‘transkaroo bring her food for the road’. this is a play on words from the opening lyric of the south african hit television show of the eighties, named transkaroo. “transkaroo bring haar huistoe”. *english translation:transkaroobring her home {read more on my blog - link in bio}

transkaroo is by far my favourite restaurant on the garden route - as of december 2015.

you must book to secure a table because even in the off season this place is packed.

our waiter (werner) was excellent and knew exactly what to recommend for the table. big ups to him and the other people who quite clearly give their all at this restaurant.

the lamb shank was melt in your mouth, fall off the bone tender and tasted out of this world. the tender chicken in delicious leek risotto was so well cooked you actually had to stop and savour every bite. the pork belly and mash had the best crackling i have ever eaten in a restaurant and again was so well prepared and tender that it fell apart at the slightest touch of the knife.

the food was so well presented and when next i visit i will definitely try theirtranskaroo(tender lamb neck) or the duck.

up until this point i was willing to give them 10/5 without a second thought because it was just that good - atmosphere, food and service- but my dessert ( the cheesecake brownie) was a little disappointing simply because it tasted like a really moist chocolate cake and not really what i expected of a cheesecake brownie. but it was still a really decadent moist chocolate cake and would gladly order it again - it was just lacking in the brownie and cheesecake department.

i considered for a long time whether to drop the score to a 4.5 from a 5 but in the end decided that those perfectly prepared mains and the service and the fact that i fully intend to become a repeat customer meant i had to give them the full 5/5. plus the other desserts looked so could i am quite willing to come back and try them all.

you honestly would be doing yourself a disservice by not visiting this hidden gem on the banks of the groot brak rivier.

also they have really cool ostrich egg chandeliers. sadly my camera could not capture the colours properly but i hope that whomever is reading this will go see them in person.
