a menu you could never exhaust, & great service. the menu can freeze up even a picky eater. there are mexican, asian and american comfort choices.

we had a thai-style marinated skirt steak (great, hot-spicy marinade, and immense portion) and a carnitas rojas (achiote citrus marinade...perfectly-seasoned, enough for two normal dinners, though a lot of the excess was [nicely-cooked] black beans). it took us longer to narrow our choices down to two than it took them to bring the food.

they do home made desserts, all quite good according to my sacto informant. we had a napoleon that was gigantic. i'm skeptical of giant desserts -- i worked in the kitchen at a seattleplacecalled the great american food & beverage co. which featured donuts bigger than the liferings on the titanic -- and they were half as tasty as the safety equipment woulda been. they had a dozen other elephantiasis-inspired choices, all either offensive or listless. but tower cafe's napoleon, while nothing like what the french serve beyond having many layers and the basic appearance at a bigger scale, was very very good, an original invention that's good in its own right.

service was brilliant. our waitress was just chatty enough, responding to questions designed to help us winnow down possibilities, and she made sure we were taken care of without over-visiting.

only thing that could have been improved was the coffee (decent beans, i think, but a bit watery).

a favorite.

best brunchplacein sacramento. i have been coming to thisplacesince i was a kid. the custard soaked french toast is still my husband's favorite, and i love the eggs tower. if you want to get a good seat, get there around 8 on the weekends. the outdoor seating area is almost like a secret garden - giant japanese maples and all types of flowers and bushes provide a canopy to sit and relax. cannot recommend thisplaceenough!

spread too thin. after having eaten at the tower cafe four times now, i am surprised to see such glowing reviews. while it is fun to go to aplacedecorated with such international flair, a large and varied menu, and always bustling, it all seems to come at the cost of the quality of the food and speed of service.

i've had something from each section of the menu, and each time my food was mediocre at best, and i've had the same dish, far superior, at another sacramento restaurant.

in the mood for a good thai curry? there are two places next door to one another just a block away on the same street, not to mention thai basil on j.

want some caribbean flair? go to celestine's on k.

the portabella toscana sandwich looked good, but it was much better at pronto on 16th and p.

so take the extra time to narrow down what you're actually in the mood for and go to aplacethat serves it, that way when you order that kind of food, it'll be good.
