absolutely amazing food and excellent value. wines were all very good and also extremely reasonably priced. staff were extra helpful and friendly, will definitely be going back! loved the presentation of the food and lots of attention to detail, plus all the food was extremely fresh! a lovely dining experience, can't wait to go back!

tonight it took a while for staff to notice we were ready to order but once ordered the food came quickly and hot!

the tables are directly next to each other so you are intimate with strangers and privvy to their conversations.

it's also a sushi place so you do have that tug between restaurant and takeaway.

had katsu curry for lunch. my god was that salty, not quite what i am used to. seemed they were having a bit of a run on the curry and the woman came in with a packet of japanese curry you would expect to find in new world. not much love there, plus the miso tasted like it was made yesterday (quite old). the pork katsu was over cooked and wafer thin. so overall not a good experience.not sure i will come back. i get a little bit disappointed when non japanese try to cook japanese food, they don't get the japanese flavours.

best best best ever sushi in wellington. since my friend introduced katsu and udon to me a while ago. i eat here about twice a week, more if i can. i have told so many people about this place. because i love the fresh food, the fact that you can eat 'cafeteria style' and each person pays for their own food, so there's no nasty bill surprises at the end. great for when you're in a group and on a budget. i also find that i can eat until sushi comes out of my ears for less than the price of a glass of wine at other restaurants.

i highly recommend this place if you want fresh, quality, affordable food.

one tiny little vice i do have though, staff aren't that friendly, considering i'm a regular here. however, guess you can understand that, seeing they are soooo busy making delicious food, who has time to be friendly, right?

extremely disappointed with the service i received today. i went in at 1.30 this afternoon looking to purchase the carrot avocado sushi for my son. there was only one piece left in the window so i asked if there was any more in the containers just behind. when i was told there was only the single piece left, i asked if i could get some made. the female employee said no, to which i responded by saying if i could get it made i would buy two rolls , not just a few pieces. she then told me if i really wanted it... she could maybe make it in 2 hours! i couldn't believe she told me 2 hours! i could have understood had she told me the chef was in a break or anything similar, but only to be told no and maybe 2 hours, i am very disappointed. i walked out. my 19month old son really enjoys your sushi which is why i have been a regular loyal customer for a long time. after the service i received today, i'm really in no hurry to return.

the food is good and the sushi is a very quick and easy lunch option. if you are choosing to dine in the food is also tasty but there is very limited atmosphere

tj is ok if you like overpriced mayo caked sushi and bentos, chinese or korean made japanese food ,salty katsu and hard rice. japanese food for kiwis who have no clue about japanese food. unfortunately wellington isn't blessed with real japanese restaurants. otherwise avoid.

affordable, clean, efficient and tasty. consistently good. tj katsu makes good food fast. ideal for a short lunch break. i have been here many times and will go again and again.

despite the place being pretty packed we got our meals quickly - i ordered the teriyaki tofu bento box, which although tasty, wasn’t very filling for the price. there was a lot of choice from the menu and sushi shelves, and i enjoyed the music and decorations.

this is the worst sushi i have ever eaten.  the 'hot' food was room temperature, there was a bone in my husbands salmon which he nearly choked on and my sushi tasted as though it had been sitting there for a week. we told the staff we were disappointed in the quality and they couldn't care less.  avoid at all costs.

i have both dined in with hot meals and had take away sushi at tj katsu several times.
the noodle and rice dishes taste really good. the katsu chicken is always well cooked and has a really good flavour. i like that they give you a complimentary and delicious miso soup with every dine-in cooked meal.
the service is always really good and i like the art on the walls.
highly recommended.

one of the best japanese restaurants in wellington cbd. there was a huge variety of sushi and the ones i ordered was rolled well and tasted yum.

the rice dish “spicy chicken don” was not too spicy and had the flavour of spices/sauce they used. i’m saying because most spicy dishes would just feel like tasting chilli or chilli sauce. however, this dish was amazing and would definitely visit for lunch again next time i’m in town :) this is a place i could recommend for sure :)

if you are into fresh sashimi but would like a complete meal, i would recommend the fresh salmon bento as it tasted fresh and delicious including their miso soup. great staff and reasonable price.
