imaginative, for sure, but only for nibbling... :(. imaginative menu, for sure, but $135 later the four of us left----- hungry and a little discouraged. the sharesies are pre-chosen combinations of gourmet items, so we found that there was something in each order we didnt really like that much and would not have chosen if we could have done so. but the extensive beer menu is worth it, though, if you'd like to quaff some european beer unavailable anywhere else on the south side, and fresh french press coffee. i'd go again as an evening appetizer/drink sip, possibly, then somewhere else for the meal and dessert. kudos for imagination though, guys!

not what i was expecting. i had heard of three boars through word of mouth and after our original destination (sugarbowl) was full as per usual we decided to head a couple blocks to this new place. very nice inside, good atmosphere upstairs in the main dining room. the beer menu was very extensive and exactly what i had hoped for. local brews from yellowhead and bottled options from all over. i would go again if i were only planning on a couple nice beers. the food however threw my table through a loop.

the menu had no pictures of the items so the descriptions and prices were what we had to go on. i'm not in the habit of researching every new place on the net first so this could have been avoided. i ordered the "salmon 2 ways" which cost 14 dollars. with sugarbowl as my reference point and it's inclusion under the "sharesies" section i expected a salmon fillet's amount of fish flesh. instead the plate was a single wrapped piece of fillet and a tiny cat food dish of diced salmon. perhaps 1/4 of a salmon fillet. i have no complaints about the quality, both ways the salmon was delicious. i only wish i hadn't banked on 3 boars for dinner as i was starving when i arrived. thankfully kfc's 4 piece chicken meal is just 9 dollars and was a jaywalk away. the poutine is somewhat reasonable size but of course this has to do with the price of a potato. the cornish game hen was again delicious but tiny. half a pygmy forest chicken is not enough for a lumberjack's dinner.

i could see myself stopping in for a pint downstairs at the bar, but i am not into micro cuisine. great place to take a date though, very 'hip' atmosphere and many girls don't like adult sized portions anyway. just remember to have a frozen pizza in the freezer at home for later.

overrated.. left hungry.. a more tapas style themed restaurant with plenty of choices for beer and other drink selections. the decor reminded me of european eateries as well as that modern industrial theme many eateries/restaurants have been going for.

the food on the other hand was very unsatisfying. we shared 4 items: their poutine (which changes so i'm told), their candied cashews, banh mi (vietnamese submarine) and some bacon wrapped concoction.

all of them were mediocre to very poor tasting. for such a small menu nothing blew my mind away. i normally expect with small menu's that everything is very well done. this is sadly not the case.

my beer was good though. ( mainly because they had no a/c upstairs and only small windows letting in air, and it felt like a boiler room upstairs).

plenty of choices in the area including many good restaurants on whyte ave. it looked like it had potential but i will not be back.

their menu changes on a regular basis, at least weekly if not daily. so be prepared to be adventurous, if you had a favorite dish on one visit, it might not be there on the next. i will undoubtedly be back to try more since their menu constantly changes and evolves, and i know there will be great flavorful surprises in store

$90 later and still hungry. although i appreciate their concept of "sharing", but it's not enjoyable when each person can only take one bite from each dish. the food was decent and so was the service. however, i will not be back due to the exaggerated and ridiculous prices for minature sized portions.

deceptively filling small plates. although three boars eatery serves small plates of food, don't be fooled! they are deceptively filling little buggers! not to mention, delicious! we thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate, although we did wish some dishes had a bit more of some items such as cheese, gravy, sauce, as there were perhaps not enough of everything on every plate to get the "whole bite" experience every time.

three boars occupies a vintage building with a decidedly rustic feel. wooden walls, old windowpanes and the like. it's gorgeous. the menu changes often and is divided into several sections, including bar snacks, "rabbit food" (i.e., lighter snacks) and "sharesies" (i.e., larger things meant for sharing. sorry, three boars, but the word "sharsies" doesn't mesh with your gorgeous abode and sounds like it was written by a gaggle of eleven year old girls.

4.5/5 for three boars. three boars is the talk of the town at the moment and everyone has great things to say. it's a brand new place in garneau, an area exploding with all sorts of culinary delights. the restaurant is on the small side, and it encompasses two levels and a patio. "bright and airy" are the adjectives that come to mind upon entering. beautiful distressed woods as far as the eye can see, gorgeous minimalist light fixtures - this is the latest place for hipsters to flock.
i had attempted to make a reservation, but was informed that they only do so for parties of 6+. it was no problem, we showed up at 5pm on a saturday and were seated without issue. we followed the server past the downstairs bar, up the narrow stairs, and to a cozy corner table surrounded by (open) windows. such a beautiful way to enjoy a summer meal.

the menu is presented on a clipboard, with the first page as food items, and the following few pages as drink options. they offer a long list of beers and other concoctions. the one thing that caught me off guard about the food is that it is served tapas-style - which i'm perfectly fine with, i just didn't know. within my party of three, we decided to each pick a dish which we would all share. everything sounded quite delicious. not in the mood for alcohol, i opted for a cherry tree cola to drink. old timey and yummy, this had a distinctive cherry flavour combined with a more "natural" tasting cola. perfectly good!

onto the food, once the order was placed, the various plates arrived in no particular time or order. it's the kind of place where you'll get some drinks, relax, and graze over your meal as it arrives. it may be the perfect hangout location. our first dish to arrive was the smoked black cod brandade (pickles, toast - $12.00). a very nice, light start. a brandade is traditionally an emulsion of salt cod and olive oil eaten in winter with bread or potatoes. turns out, it works as a summer dish also! the pate-like cod was smokey and creamy, made up of deliciously delicate yet robust flavours that easily spread onto the toast. i liked the pickled veggies (fiddleheads, green beans) as an extra direction to the flavour on this plate.

next out was the free range chicken bánh mì (house made pate, sriracha mayo, pickled carrots & daikon, cilantro - $10.00). this was a take on the vietnamese sub, and it was executed excellently. every bite was a burst of flavours. the chicken was juicy and cooked to perfection, while all of the other components came together harmoniously within the crusty bread.

our last entree dish to arrive was the spring creek ranch beef brisket poutine ($13.00). this stole the show, so much so that we ordered a second one. i loved the unique take on the standard poutine; potatoes instead of fries. the cheese curds that you would expect were ever-present and the delicious gravy seemed very involved. of course the star was the brisket, which was tender and flavourful. every bite was amazing.

when it came time for dessert they had one option available which we took. it was similar to a shortcake with fruit and mascarpone. a nice light finish, the fruit (strawberries and blueberries) were bright and fresh, and the mascarpone was creamy and delicious. a very nice end.

the menu at three boars changes daily because of their dedication to local ingredients. this is a bit of a trend at the moment - but an excellent one to get on board with. they are making fresh and delicious food and they have a conscious about it. you'll feel satisfied and as if you'd had a wonderful meal that isn't weighing you down. there is a whole lot to be appreciated about this new place!

overpriced for what you get. i appreciate what they are trying to do with the restaurant. it's refreshing to have the menu change so frequently.

however dishes are quite small and extremely expensive for what you get. many of the items are designed for sharing, but it would probably take two or more of the 'sharing' plates to satisfy a single person. despite the small size, each dish is priced as a full entree would be at a moderate-upper end restaurant.

not such a great meal. i know how tapas are supposed to taste. i don't know whether we got a different chef when we went there, but the patatas bravas (mispelled "potatas", a tapas classic) portion was tiny. honestly, 4 mini potatoes (3cm wide in diamater) cut in half for $8? splashed everywhere with tasteless "spicy aoli-wanna be" sauce? plus the thing of this bar is that you can "share" the food and that was definitely not shareable. the salad we got was good but not worth the money. the place looks very low key but the prices are insane for the amount of food and the quality of it. i've been to tapas places that are that expensive or more but every bite i had was delicious and unfortunately that was not the case at three boars. at least buy an air conditioner if you're going to charge that much money. it was smoking hot in there.

fantabulous. it was our one year anniversary, so james and i decided to go out for dinner. we are foodies who have been to a great many of the well reviewed restaurants in edmonton. we heard about three boars on a cbc radio show, who gave them an awesome review, so we were excited to give them a try. we were lucky because the night that we went out the weather was not that great; bonus for us, we walked in and got a table right away. the decor was modern, simple, intimate yet comfortable. the seating area was upstairs and there was a small bar downstairs. simply put, the food was brilliant! the menu was a little different from a traditional restaurant in the sense that the portions were designed for sharing. awesome, because a couple could sample a decent portion of the menu (which has over 35 editions, by the way) and satisfy one's apatite and desire for variety. everything that we had was "lick the plate clean and order a second...or third...or fourth (poutine)" good. we had the mushrooms and egg yolk, the pulled pork poutine, the salmon, and the butter cake for desert. i think that the staff and owners greatly contributed to our experience. everyone working at the three boars was super excited about the food and drink menu and were more that willing to offer suggestions regarding their personal favorites. dinning at the three boars is the equivalent to buying stocks in a million dollar venture that is about to explode!this restaurant is definitely on it's way to becoming a major player in edmonton's restaurant scene.

first i would like to note i have not eaten here, now with that said there lies a reason that i don't think many ppl are talking about on here, and that reason is that this place is about the size of two large suv's, now yes that is supposed to be sort of a funny comment, the shear size of this place stunned me and my girlfriend, there were about 3 or 4 two person couples and a group or two of 4, now if your still reading this food less review that's at max 16 ppl, and there was two 2 person tables and one "big" table that sits about 6, now did i forget to mention they are about as close together as clay aiken and the microphone on a saturday night! i'm talkin reach over and try the soup without having to lean in.
well all in all we didn't want to eat there due to the fact, however the food looks amazing and we will do a full food filled review at some point.

one of the worst restaurants in edmonton. this is a very overrated restaurant. we ordered a large variety of their dishes and only found a few of them to even be palatable. while i respect the gastropub concept and the use local ingredients the flavour palate was uninspired and the dishes over salted and poorly executed. to make matters worse the restaurant was stiflingly hot despite a cool spring evening outside. on a positive note they have a robust selection of interesting beer.

great food, impressive and friendly expertise, unbeatable atmosphere. i spent some of the most relaxed, happy, sensationally-fulfilled hours of my restaurant-going life here on a thursday evening. the atmosphere is impeccable, thanks both to the beautiful carpentry of the venue and the excellent wait staff. after asking for an innis & gunn, the waitress recommended a replacement beer that was the perfect approximation of the unique taste that is innis & gunn. in short - the waitress, not just the bartender, has an excellent knowledge of what's on tap and what they offer. she was friendly, attentive, and easygoing; we liked that she sat down next to us to talk to us about what we wanted to order.

then, the food itself - amazing. the portions are smaller than what you'll be used to. don't gripe about it. instead, share and eat with friends. you'll notice that at the end of the night, you have a pleasant buzz and a warm glow from the beautiful dining you've experienced, rather than the bloated feeling of being stuffed that you get from an entree at other bars/pubs. the standouts of the night for us were the duck rillette (amazing. not at all what we expected and surpassed our expectations), the brussel sprouts, and the flat-iron steak. go to three boars if you want to experience what going out for drinks with friends could be. it's a better world.
