th3hungrycat june 4, 2012 barbecue thestockyards699 st. clair avenue west wychwood barbecue   i finally made it to thestockyards! that knocks my list of must-try restaurants to about 300? we arrived around quarter to six and the place was busier than usual because of grid to ‘s burger week . while you don’t have to arrive a whole hour early, you will want to arrive well before six if you want to nab a spot in this cozy joint.  it is bar top seating only, with no more than room for 25. the menu is simple: burgers, ribs or chicken.  unfortunately, the ribs and smoke chicken only make appearances on tuesdays, fridays and sundays – so mark it down on your calendars. we opted for the 16 oz. iced tea ($2) and limemade ($3.25) which could almost pass for mojito – almost.  both were light and refreshing. the fried chicken dinner ($14) is sufficient enough for 2, though you may not want to share.  in essence, a half-chicken coated in buttermilk with a side of fresh slaw and a mountainous ma

a great place for thestockyardsand they do it quite well. the only place where i'd dock a point off is for the price for the the stockyards. but, if you are looking at other places, then it's pretty much competitive especially when the meals do come with unlimited, salad, rice and miso soup.

so, overall, quite great and don't forget to check in to claim a free soft drink! another thing is that they were pretty friendly and quick for the refills

for our 32nd burger review, we travelled to the west end of the city to visit one of "toronto's most underrated burger joints" the city has to offer. doing some research about where we were going to eat at for this month didn't really take any time at all. our minds were made up and thestockyardswas the next on the list. we had heard about this place a few times over the last few months, but it was the location that was a bit of a challenge for us. basically, mark and i weren't familiar with the st. clair west area, so we really didn't know what to expect, and this was going to be a new adventure for the both of us. we arrived shortly after 2pm on a day in early january and there was already a small group of people dining in the restaurant. when we entered, we were quickly given a choice of where we would like to sit. we grabbed a couple of stools up along a bar they had against one of their walls. the space was fairly small, yet big enough to fit a few hungry customers. given by my first impression, i could tell this place was a neighbourhood go-to hangout. but of course, this day in particular attracted to burger enthusiasts to its shop to try some delicious homemade creations. and i came with an empty stomach. upon arriving, mark and i had given the menu a quick glance and saw only a few burgers to choose from. but they weren't your typical original cheeseburger or signature hamburger. these were creations made by the kitchen staff at the stockyards, prepared fresh daily. all of the burgers sounded very interesting to try and i was going over them one by one in my head before the waiter returned to ask for our order.

when you plan a visit to the stockyards, you should also plan a visit to the gym.stockyardsis comfort food done right--their menu is home to burgers, sandwiches, ribs, and chicken, with no expense spared on flavour. it's a modest joint, only seating 20 people at a time even though they could easily fill a much larger venue – especially on tuesdays, fridays, and sundays when they serve their notorious bbq ribs and chicken.stockyardsis owned by tom davis, who's perfected the art of smoking meat. his chicken, for example, is marinated with garlic, cumin, and buttermilk for 24 hours before being smoked (in his homemade wood smoker) for seven hours to create his signature southern style chicken.

i had bookmarked thestockyardsa while ago, based on something that i had read somewhere about good burgers, and today we had an opportunity to check it out at lunchtime. the first thing i noticed when we entered is that it is not a big restaurant. about a third of the restaurant is occupied by an open kitchen, and the remaining areas only have counter and stool seating. i am not fond of stools, but it's about the food, right? the restaurant was relatively full, but there were two seats together at the end of the main counter in front of the kitchen. when it is busy, you are sitting and eating elbow to elbow with someone. it did feel a bit cramped at times.

we looked over the menu briefly. we notice that the people sitting beside us had chicken and waffles that looked pretty good, so swmbo's decision was made. she chose the 2 piece ($14) instead of the 4 piece ($17), which turned out to be more than enough for lunch. the chicken is marinated in buttermilk, and then deep fried, giving it a pretty crispy exterior. the thicker of her two pieces could have used a bit more time in the fryer; it was probably cooked all the way, but she did leave a couple of small bites.

i was trying to decide between a pulled pork sandwich and a burger, so i asked our server. she asked me if i had ever had one of their burgers, to which i replied no, and she suggested i try that first. i chose the green chili pimento cheese burger and added fries. i watched the cook prepare the burger. first he sprinkled salt on the flat top grill, then he dropped a ball of hamburger meat on top of the salt. he used a hand press to squash the meat to a uniform thickness. once it was cooked on one side, he flipped it over and added a large dollop of a thick, white sauce that must have been the jalapeño, cheddar and mayo mixture. when done, that was placed inside a grilled bun with butter lettuce, and served in a cast iron skillet, with a pile of fries. this was a pretty good burger. the fries were also pretty good too.

so overall some mixed results, but still a good outing. i would go back if someone i know wanted to give it a try.

another restaurant featured on diners, drive ins and dives that is a great place for burgers and fried chicken. it's not spacious so you're better off taking it too go but once you're in and having a good time then you're all good.

the owner is a great guy and the rest of the staff are friendly too. expect good recommendations but be warned everything is good.

we were curious enough to drive there to try out a burger made famous on the show which had beef bone marrow and butter. unfortunately that burger was discontinued.

but no complaints as the other dishes were great. try their fried chicken as it's really good. we also had the green chilli pimento burger and the dirty thirty.

thestockyardsis a place not to be missed.

my trip to thestockyardswas absolutely amazing. me and a friend went on a saturday afternoon, and although it was busy, it was well worth the wait! i had the dirty thirty burger, which is stuffed with cheddar and blue cheese, and it was fantastic, as the cheese seemed to just ooze out. my friend had the pulled pork sandwich, and from the bite i tried, you could really sense the taste of the apples it was smoked with. the service was great, our waitress always made sure we had what we needed. the space itself isn't amazing, as on a busy saturday afternoon, you felt extremely crammed, which made for a not-so-pleasant experience, but just based on food alone, i found that thestockyardswas amazing!

doesstockyardsengage in racial profiling?

yes.

the service is absolutely terrible. my friend and i are both black and we wanted to try out this place because of the reviews. my friend went in first while i parked the car. when i entered, the waitress said "who's here for a table of two". in response, we said "us", and she looked straight through us and had a full on conversation with the white customers next to us. after she finished her conversation, she said "come here".

after she sat us down, we waited for almost 15 minutes and she didn't even come to ask for our orders. when she passed by us, i had to flag her down and tell her that we were finally ready to order. no apology for the long wait. nothing. when she finally got our food after another 25 minutes, we noticed that she was much more attentive with the white guests in the restaurant than with us. when i asked for extra napkins, she made a huge "sigh" and hit my shoulder with the napkins. she was sarcastic, unprofessional and annoying. by contrast, she was so respectful and patient with the white guests. we couldn't believe it.

the good thing is that they forgot to charge us for the orange juice and considering the shitty service we didn't remind them.

so, if you're white and want to have your white privilege re-affirmed, then you should goto stockyards. otherwise, non-white people and white people with a conscious should watch out for this place. if you want a 1940's, mason-dixon line, plantation experience, then come to stockyards!

never again! avoid at all costs!

thestockyardsis just one of the places i love hitting up during winter when i have bbq cravings.

the restaurant itself is quite small and there are only a few tables to sit down. it is very cramped so i would prefer getting take out. this place is nothing fancy but we're here for the food so i can't complain too much.

i decided to check out their beef brisket which was pretty good. i wouldn't say it was amazing but it definitely satisfies my bbq cravings. they have a good brunch on sundays as well which i would love to check out if i get the chance.

simply superb! thestockyardswas surprisingly quiet (relative to their usual business at least) for a saturday afternoon, but i'm not complaining by any means!

my wife had the green pimento burger which was spiced to perfection, and i had their famous chicken and waffles, which were to die for. if only it were more accessible!

sublime!!! absolutely one of the best restaurant i've ever been in toronto!! we were a group of 4 and we went after running the scotiabank half-marathon, what's better than bbq and fried chicken to refuel ourselves??? we ordered, fried chicken with fires, fried chicken with waffle and maple syrup, the dirty thirty burger and sausage and waffles. after living for 6 years in the south of the us, thestockyardsis the best soul food in toronto. the sausage gravy was so decadent and flavorful. the burger patty (they only make 30 per day of this special order, they have other burgers) was filled with cheese and the addition of perfectly crisp thick bacon was the best choice i ever made :d. the burger literally explodes in your mouth, an explosion of taste!! the fried chicken was very crispy as well as juicy and tender. we were able to buy a full rack of bbq ribs to bring home!!!
service was impeccable and lisa 9the host/manager) was so nice with us, she is such a great person!!! i can't wait to go back!

went tostockyardson a friday afternoon. had the fried chicken dinner. it's delicious and the portion is huge. fries are excellent. the chicken tastes great and the coating is not too thick.
while chick-n-joy leslieville is my ultimate fried chicken place, thestockyardsis a close second.
the place itself is amazing. the staff is super friendly and have the hipster factor under control. next time, will try one of the dirty 30 burgers!

the ribs ain't slows but they may be as close you'll find in toronto. smoked chicken is off the hook, always juicy and flavourful - you'll be smelling smoke on your fingers for hours after you've ripped apart that bird. and the burgers are simple, sloppy, and sumptuous.stockyards will stick to ya ribs!

thestockyardssunday brunch don’t miss out on big portions, delicious dishes and great service. and don’t you dare miss out on chicken & waffles! we’ve been for dinner to neighbourhood darling, thestockyards, more times that we’d like to admit (considering we only moved down the street a few months ago.) while the burgers were mouthwateringly good, we knew we had to get in here for sunday brunch and their famed chicken and waffles. we had heard many a good thing about it and so we dressed in our finest plaid and headed out with @herroyalmelness . we dressed as lumber jacks for brunch — this was, awesomely, not on purpose the place was packed even at 10:30 am on a sunday! pro-brunching tip: make sure to get here early! it’s small place so seating is at a minimum but most importantly – worth the wait! order up! a few delicious dishes being prepared in front of us. we got a seat right at the bar and had great view of everyone’s meals being made. there’s a lot of yummy on this brunch menu but we knew what we wanted right away. chicken and waffles with sweet chili syrup. here are the chicken & waffles in all their glory. perfectly crunchy chicken, huge portions (you could share this between two people and still have leftovers) the thing that made this dish for me was the sweet chilli syrup. it just gave everything a hint of hot spice. just delicious. best fried chicken i’ve had in a while! melissa went with the griddle cakes griddle cakes with lemon butter, syrup and a side of bacon you get a giant pancakes with a side of syrup and some yummy citrus butter. she ordered bacon on the side because bacon and didn’t regret it. i like my bacon crispy and it’s something you don’t often see with thick slab bacon. no worries about that here! perfectly crunchy! i know i’ll be back here again – they are just down the street after all. and i heard a whisper about a new menu item called the dirty bird? i’ll let you in on what that is when i try it myself! here’s to chicken! here’s
