known for its country ham (and yes that means a salt cured ham) and red eye gravy for breakfast. not usually what i eat but they do a spectacular job and i will be ordering it again. their biscuits are better than most restaurants and i'd rank it as the 2nd best i've ever had in a restaurant...and that's saying they are good! don't get discouraged if there is a wait since the line tends to move fast. it is a very small diner and has been featured in print and film.

the food here is okay, not bad not great. flying biscuit has better biscuits and breakfasts for that matter. the interior decor is retro quaint . great service, decent grits, the eggs were
eggs. coffee was hot and industrial. atmosphere is comfortable.

the silver skillet was one of the first entries i posted on this blog and, being new to the area, had only been there a few times. i decided that the skillet deserves a more reflective review. the skillet is a good 60 years old at this point. it's a georgia tech institution. i see colleagues there regularly (sometimes that's good, sometimes not so good). but clearly it has a wide following---the 14th street bridge construction put a dent in their business, so a lot of people must cross the great i-85 chasm that separates geeks and suits in order to have their breakfast. the skillet wears its age well. it doesn't play up its quaintness or its fame. it's just one of those places that never changes. the piece de resistance of the skillet is the biscuits and gravy. the gravy is silky smooth. luscious is the best term i can think of to describe it. the biscuits hit the perfect balance between flakiness and moistness. i think that lunch at the skillet isn't quite up to the same level as brea

the service was very prompt and very friendly. the food, however, was just okay. the biscuits were hard & the gravy was nothing memorable. the pancakes were undercooked & doughy. very charming diner with great service but just okay food.

awful, let me explain...

over two weeks ive toured the southern states, well a few of them. without doubt the meal i had at the silver skillet was the worse.

meatloaf with buttered corn and mashed potato with gravy. the meatloaf arrived lukewarm with cold barbeque sauce on top. after a couple of bits i asked the waitress if it was meant to be lukewarm (genuine question), and she said she could heat it in the microwave. so off it went and back it came, nuked. the taste and texture was, erm, well not great. infact it was worse than that - and im being very charitable.

the sauce was disgusting, sickly sweet ketchup - lashings of it. i scraped off as much as i could but to no avail - you cant make a tasteless blob great by removing yukky sauce.

the mashed potato followed a close second, this was actually cold. lumps of potato i dont mind but cold lumpy mash.. not good.

the corn. well how could you go wrong with corn from a can? well it was hot, good start. i didnt get any sense of butter, perhaps they replaced the missing butter with the puddle of water the corn was swimming in.

overall, it was the worse meal i had eaten in the two weeks i spent touring the lovely southern states. another place to avoid. on a positive note the waitress was very sweet and absolutely delightful :)

nice place. meatloaf was good, and the mixed greens were fantastic. i really liked the biscuits. i sampled the onion rings and mac n' cheese, both of which were pretty good. if you're expecting some gourmet new-south cooking... go elsewhere. if you want a meat and two sides that tastes like home when away from home, then definitely come here. service was crisp, but the small dining room can and does fill upp quickly. yes, it was on dd&d too. i give it a b+ overall.

too pricey for standard food. the restaurant was packed when we arrived and we waited for about 20 minutes for a table. that never bothers me because i typically consider it a good sign when a restaurant is busy, but i was disappointed.

the food is a *little* better than waffle house. it's definitely over-priced.

i did enjoy the history of the silver skillet. though it seems as if its heydays are over, it certainly was once a nifty little diner.

simple food. the food is very simple. anyone can do it at home, so it's not special at all. for me that's a minus to pay for something you can do better at home...

ok now silver skillet is by no means fabulous, but i do like this place because it is a fun quick place to grab breakfast. located right near the 14th st bridge, silver skillet is your typical "diner" and is quite popular in midtown atlanta. it's been open since 1956 so clearly the owners are doing something right. it can get kind of packed during the weekends so don't bank on them having space for large parties as the restaurant booths tend to fill up fast. on my visit my friend and i opted to sit at the counter since there were no booths or table

wow! what a gem! great food (i can't adequately describe the wonderful savory/salty country ham on a freshly-made biscuit), plus a truly-bottomless cup of perfectly brewed coffee. a 'must visit' location! (but be certain to get there early, as they're only open until 2:30pm on weekdays!!!)

solid breakfast. this is the pretty traditional southern breakfast (and lunch) joint. everything solid and what you expect at a reasonable price. arriving at 7:30 on a saturday to a packed house with people waiting for a seat tells you that there's a loyal following. food comes out fast, delivered by hard working but very pleasant servers.

this place rocks it hard for breakfast!. i would go here again in a minute - just make sure you hit it when you wont have to wade thru the yuppie dbags tooling around the atl in their land rovers and ed hardy shirts. other than the parking and wait sometimes due to the tidal wave of humanity that drops on this joint when folks get a hankerin' for some southern breakfast fare. the grits were good, the biscuits awesome and the country ham is as salty as the bottom of pretzel bag as it is supposta be.
seacrest,
out.
