the route 58 delicatessen

bad news... its been a few months since ive eaten here and quality of thefoodseems to have changed. the burger/reuben had a frozen patty and over cooked. also, i found a mystery animal part inside the sandwich (still unidentified). the waitress was wonderful and took the bill but it was disappointing. also, at 2pm, slow enough crowd, i would have expected a manager to visit. might have to wait a while before i try again.

protect your wallets and stay far away.

if you manage to come here on one of the few times they're actually open, be prepared for ridiculously high prices and the restaurant trying to steal your money outright.

the restaurant's website offers online ordering - only their system doesn't work, leading to us ordering $66 offoodonly to be met with shrugs from the staff. upon checking our bank app, we found that we had been charged twice for the order.

after complaining to the manager, i was dismissively told "we don't have online ordering", despite it being functional on the website. she was completely disinterested in fixing the problem, telling me only "you'll have to cancel the charges", and accepting no responsibility whatsoever for the situation.

very busy place but not for me. crowded, prices are high even though you do get enough in one sandwich for 4 people.  seems kinda gluttonous.  i got the pastrami on rye but the bread was like store boughtfoodlion style. the pickles were mushy. the waitress said that's normal.  i never in my life had a mushy pickle. yuck.  it's different for hampton roads but a far cry from a ny style deli. the experience didn't meet the hype.

it would be difficult for this place to avoid being overrated. it's just a consequence of serving simplefoodat relatively high prices and to nearly universal acclaim. with that being said, it is pretty good and the service is better than some of the other reviews suggest. i do wish they had some lighter (by which i mean: smaller) options, if only so i could avoid wasting food.

portions are huge. i've eaten here a couple of times and although i find thefoodquite good, the portions are way too big in my opinion. the leftovers alone could feed a small army. it would be nice to have the option of smaller portion sizes, since leftovers aren't always eaten in my house and i hate to waste food.

great portions of great food. i've been here a few times and have never been disappointed. the most recent time i ordered the oscars garbage bowl and received enoughfoodto last three meals.

corned beef hash is out of this world!!!. my favoritefooddish in all of hampton roads is the corned beef hash here! flavor is the bomb, cooked to perfection. the portions are huge. the dessert is also superb!

taste of home. i took a good friend here last night hoping that this was authentic ny kosher deli. i noticed that they served reubens and figured that it was kosher style deli and still worth giving it a chance. i am glad i did. whoever owns the place did their research or is from ny, because it is the real deal and it is amazing. we ordered a reuben and hot pastrami on rye. neither of us was disappointed since the sandwiches were delicious and the size of mountains. i had a potato knish on the side and it is really a meal on its own. we were both delighted by the friendly wait staff, incrediblefoodand ny deli feel. it's my new favorite place and expect to be back monthly and that infrequency is due to the fact that it is a little pricey. but what you get is worth every cent! i love it!!

being from the north east, discovering the 58 deli was like coming home! sandwiches as big as your head, you have to plan to split a sandwich with a friend or figure on bringing a cooler to take the other half with you for a second amazing meal the next day. the corned beef, the pastrami, it's the real deal (only no one knows what a bulkie roll is around here!). if you've ever been to the carnegie deli, you'll know what you can expect, complete with the best darn ny style cheesecake you've ever had in your life. there's a rotating case of dessert cakes with too many layers to count, cream soda, pickles and potato salad, and a matzoh ball soup so beautiful, it'll bring a tear to your eye. it's a small place so plan to get there a little ahead of the normal meal times, or plan on waiting...you'll have plenty of excellent company! so worth the wait! best delifoodwe've had in years, and the staff is attentive and patient as you make your way through pages of a menu that reads like a newspaper. go. you'll love it. and you'll be back!

blah. huge portions does not make thefoodgreat, especially when they over price you forfoodthat you will not be able to eat anyway and even if you try and save it, it will be gross and soggy.i wanted the meat loaf bc iooked online beforei sent my husband to go get it but they said they did not have it so i ordered the philly steak, i asked them to add onions and bell peppers but instead they put jalapino peppers on it making it completly inedable for me. the cheesecake was good but it was $15 and was the size of 3 slices. a lil crazy. i like extrafoodbut not when i just want to pay normal price for normal portions. i understand that is what they are known for but they should have a selection with smaller portions for us lil people. over all it was ...ok

the best delifoodin tidewater!. we would agree that the portions are very large and splitting a plate is going to be a good idea for many. however, it's hard not to keep eating after your full at this really wonderful restaurant. if you enjoy great corn beef, pastrami or a reuben sandwich, you will not be disappointed... more like you'll find yourself using words like "spectacular"! today, we just had the best reuben we have had in 25 years!! we will be coming back for other choices, including breakfast and the amazing deserts. we really wish this place would stay open beyond 8 pm... we normally eat late and this amazingfoodcould quickly become a regular for us!

good reviews. some of the reviews are hilarious for this restaurant but they are spot on. went here based on them. pretty big portions and was very tasty. service was a little average but all in all it was okay.foodmade up for the little short comings. try it out.

the closest you can get to new york deli here in va beach. the staff is always mice and friendly and thefoodis delicious. the price is a little high but you get a lot of food
