the ocean terrace - the oyster box hotel

we were looking for a pet friendly restuarant and we decided to give the oyster box a try. it was our first time dinning here and it was a great experience. for mains we had the grilled prawns with pea dill rice, prawns were succulent and de shelled. we also had the baby peri peri chicken which was soft and saucy.

being pet friendly, the pets also had their own menu. my pup thoroughly enjoyed himself. it's also a great place for pet owners who want to take their pets out for a dinning experience

the grill room at the oyster box was my preferred choice for celebrating my mother's birthday, however the allure of the indian buffet swayed her senses and so we chose the terrace for the evening.

the entirety of the experience at the oyster box is utterly sublime, from the impeccable service to the glorious views and the fabulous food.

the glamour of the decor and ambience is so worthwhile of such an indulgent and decadent night out.

wow... where can i start with the ocean terrace. situated in the gorgeous oyster box hotel this restaurant has breathtaking views of the idyllic indian ocean and umhlanga coastline.

the food of course! well, you're spoilt for choice here. the buffet is excellent, the food is filled with spice and flavour. with lovely soft rotis and rice.

the service is good, as well. waiters were always attentive, and kept our glasses full. and to top everything off! a live band performed, which was absolutely lovely coupled with the beautiful views and seeing the dolphins in the crisp, blue ocean.

well, there's not much to complain or to brag about. i don't know about you but, this restaurant lacks something, i can't tell but it's definitely missing something...

the oyster box oozes extravagance. it's absolutely breath taking. we arrived here on a monday morning and ordered the tea for 2! a beautiful selection of 'high tea' choices. it was filled with beautiful sandwiches, cupcakes, pastries, scones and macaroons. the view from the terrace is gorgeous, service is so on point and quality is superb! just watch out for the monkeys, one stole a cupcake off the table of which the staff chased away, kept a look out and replaced within seconds and apologized. will be back again when back in durban.

the view from the ocean terrace was absolutely breathtaking with the crashing waves a stone throw away and the majestic light house towering above. the staff were friendly and were glad to accommodate our walk-in party of two. the vibrant decor and constant chatter of families and friends...

my husband and i booked a table at the oyster box as soon as we knew we were going down to umhlanga. we were excited to finally get to try it out and had accepted that this treat wouldn't be budget.

we were sadly left a bit disappointed with the overall experience. the location is beautiful and we were lucky with the weather. our waiter was really friendly. we started with oysters and they were great. but it kind of ended there. my husband had the confit duck cassoulet, which seemed pretty average. i ordered fish and chips, expecting an out of this world classic at r175. the fish itself wasn't bad, although i suspect fried a bit too long as the batter was dark and the fish a little dry. the chips were a terrible disappointment. i was expecting beautifully fresh chunky hand-cut chips, but instead received stale and dry and tasted like shop bought frozen chips. at that price i am really expecting a quality meal.

not sure if i'd return for a meal, but maybe a drink overlooking the lighthouse. it was not fine dining.

the terrace has a fantastic view of the ocean. the staff are friendly and attentive but seemed to have a limited knowledge of the menu.

the food itself was somewhat of a let down. our oysters were good, however, my confit duck cassoulet was average at best. my wife had the fish and chips. the chips were stale, dry and powdery, i wouldn't be surprised if they were mccain's frozen chips.

we were both left a bit disappointed after having such high expectations of this restaurant.

if you're looking for the perfect lunch spot in umhlanga, then you'll find it at the iconic oyster box hotel! the beautiful ocean terrace offers amazing views over the indian ocean and of famous lighthouse.

their menu is filled with stylish yet uncomplicated freshly made meals to enjoy in the laid back tropical atmosphere. they also have a great selection of cocktails - perfect for sundowners!

had my sisters 21st birthday lunch there yesterday. staff were very accommodating and provided us with balloons and carrot cake. as a party of 5, ordering a 3 course meal each, its hard to please every one - but the chef did just that. favorite main: crayfish. favorite dessert: croissant bread pudding. all with a perfect view. worth the pricey splurge

wow wow wow!!! everything about the oyster box and all its restaurants is amazing. the lunchtime buffet is sometime everyone should experience at least once. there is lots of variety and vegetarians are catered for with delicious curries as well. the prawn and chicken curry is full of taste. naans are served hot and are light and fluffy. service is impeccable. our waiter marcus was great and attentive to all our needs. best views on all of kzn.

we spent our 2nd wedding anniversary here for their buffet lunch!! the view is perfection, the staff are brilliant, the food is exceptional (especially as it's a buffet) the prawn risotto starter is exceptional, my favourite from the buffet had to be the roast beef (perfection) & their curries are divine! for desert the creme brûlée tart & the oyster box also brought us chocolate moose cake for our anniversary, lovely touch!
next time we're in umphlanga we'll defiantly be back

attended a workshop at the oyster box this past week with our lunch's being served at the ocean terrace. excellent food, attentive service and out of this world ambiance. can definitely recommend, however is rather pricey.

lovely service, view and portion size! lunch (of a bunny chow) was plenty for 2 and was extremely tasty. however, the chocolate brownie for dessert was too rich and was actually a chocolate log and had no essence of brownie at all. although the brownie was disappointing, the oyster box has still kept its standards and their high tea is a knock out the park! i highly recommend their high tea... only on a very empty stomach though!

the ocean terrace at the oyster box has a lovely selection of finger snacks and meals. my friends and i visited the restuarant for tea and cakes. we decided to try their croissants and hot chocolate. we were totally impressed with the presentation of the plated croissants. the croissants were fresh, warm and buttery and we thoroughly enjoyed them even though they were extremely expensive! the jam, cream, butter and cheese was the cherry on top and just added more value to the pastry.

i would definitely recommend brunch or afternoon tea at the ocean terrace.

superb service at the oyster box for breakfast. our waitress nomfundo was so attentive and made our visit so pleasant. the food is also superior. huge variety for their full breakfast option. everything from oysters, smoked salmon and parma ham to freshly made pancakes and waffles. their fee includes bubbly, juices, bottled water, and teas and coffees. definitely a place to visit for a spoil as it's a little steap for breakfast. their view is breathtaking.
