the grill jichana - elangeni & maharani

an absolutely stunning experience! one of the best steaks i've had in a long time. ambience was great and service excellent. a bit on the pricey side but worth it....great for a date night. perfect combination of intimacy and sophistication.

this restaurant is lovely, situated in elangeni hotel the decor was stylish and modern. upon arrival we were served complimentary sherry which was quite nice. my partner and i both had steaks which was prepared just the way we ordered it and was absolutely delicious. to end we have the chocolate ball dessert which was amazing especially when the waiter poured the chocolate sauce over it.
great service, would recommend for a special occasion.

i had a great experience making a reservation and even recieved reminder sms's and emails closer to the date. we ordered the lamb shank with mash and root vegetables and the grilled duck with mash. just to note, by root veggies, they mean parboiled asparagus, onion and carrot (i'm not a fan of asparagus and chunky peels of onions so i could not appreciate this). the duck was cooked really well and had an aromatic, spicy crumb. the place was beautiful and the service was great.

what an amazing spot. quality divine food, excellent service, brilliant atmosphere. we ordered the lamb chops and chicken which was delicious. the area in which the restaurant is situated in durban is a popular area. the food showed lots technique. the dessert was out of this world pretty and tasty 😋

excellent dining experience. we had the lamb shank which was perfectly cooked. the other meal was a surf 'n turf 300g rump and 4 medium sized prawns enjoyed with the best pepper sauce i have had yet. the steak was a good one and was also perfectly cooked. the chocolate fondant was exceptional and i looked jealously over my ice cream and chocolate sauce at it. service was fantastic. the price including the bottle of merlot was r750 which while being on the high side was worth it. our second visit here did not disappoint.

complementary sherry on arrival. beautiful restaurant, romantic setting, food was spectacular, had the roast duck and fillet with mushroom sauce and truffle savings as mains. meals where prepared as requested medium well. dessert was amazing, left me wanting more.

let me start by saying my husband and i are dessert freaks 😁. so what made us choose the grill jichana was most definitely the chocolate bomb dessert. we received good service and our waiter was very friendly and, although a bit confused with us ordering dessert first and then a meal, very efficient and helpful. to me the ambience was very upscale but felt a tad bit too "dark" for my personal taste.
no doubt we ordered the chocolate ball dessert and it was just fantastic. the theatre about it puts it in a league of its own for sure. watching the chocolate melt away under the warm chocolate sauce is enough to get you licking your lips. the berries and ice cream balances the dish out a bit as well so it doesn't come across too sweet, although i would suggest a few more fresh berries. as our meal we had burgers and the patty was of a good quality and you could taste the love that only comes with home made burger patties and it paid off. had a lot of flavour.
i would recommend this establishment to couples going out for a romantic meal ie anniversary dinner or the like. you and your partner will be very well looked after and leave having been well fed and happy 🙂

as you walk in theres a nice fancy victorian setting.

the issue i had is when ordering a steak. i ordered my steak medium-rare, however it arrived super well done to the point where it was like shoe leather. upon addressing the waiter, three waiters said it didn't come out as expected because of the type of cut i had chosen (fillet). i asked to speak to a manager or head chef on duty, neither were available, then told the waiter/s to convey what they had told me to the chef. only then did i receive a second steak cooked to perfection.

i don't go to places for free food, i go for experience. this was not a great experience.

food was simply delicious!

dessert was one of my favourite! had the 5 chocolate valrhona chocolate ball - such theatre!

i had the roast duck as a main course! it was soft and flavorful with the citrus aspect.

the menu was limited and not child friendly. steaks were prepared as ordered. starters were good. small dessert selection.

we visited the grill jichana on a wednesday evening and it was very quiet. on arrival we were offered some lovely sherry, 1st glass on the house. the bread they brought to the table was also quite good.
i ordered the 300g rump with showstring fries and a truffle-infused mushroom sauce. i asked for medium and my steak came out more well, and the meat was more on the tough side. my partner had the chicken which was grilled beautifully but my so salty! after a while we heard a bell ringing. it was 10pm, the resturant cleared empty in no time and we felt a little bit pressured to pack up our food and pay. i can't say i would want to return to the grill jichana, for their very fancy prices i expect perfection and i was disappointed.

this place is amazing! i really enjoyed myself. we had the cheese board as a starter which was excellent i had the lamb shank and my other half had a mushroom sauce fillet steak which was a 10/10
we had the chocolate ball desert which was mouth watering but left us with a sugar high. the service is great and the food is fantastic! deff a must try

eaten here a number of times and the food and service is consistent and always a pleasure.

this steakhouse does an excellent salmon dish with great fresh sides. they have chips called bafana chips that are total heaven. crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.

they have great special aged meat cuts available. classic black and white bistro environment makes this a great night out.

as a starter the seared steak salad with citrus dressing is a fresh and perfect start to a meal.
